The training began in the classroom and later moved to the Family Arena for the hands-on portion of the training exercise. Continuous training and exercises such as this ensure that the skills of emergency workers are kept sharp and equipment ready to go. Planning and preparation are the keys in keeping the St. Louis Region safe during times of natural disaster or terrorist attack. Multi-Disciplinary Simulated Terrorist Attack Drill held in St. Charles County

On June 19, 2004, St. Charles County held a multi-disciplinary simulated terrorist attack drill. The drill contained two parts and was held in two different locations. The first location was on the parking lot of the Westfield Shoppingtown Mid-Rivers Mall and involved a tanker truck carrying a nerve agent. An hour into the incident, part two of the drill was called into St. Peters Police. A van carrying a suspected dirty bomb was found near the outpatient surgery building at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital. The drill included the St. Charles – Warren County Hazardous Materials Team, the St. Charles County Bomb Squad, Central County Fire Protection District, and other area fire departments, the St. Charles County Emergency Management Agency, St. Charles County Fire and Rescue Dispatch, the County Sheriff’s Department, the St. Charles County Ambulance District, the FBI, and the St. Charles County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Dozens of volunteers, acting as stricken patients, rounded out the realism of the drill.

Heavy Rescue Task Force Exercise In order to be better prepared to provide safety to the St. Louis Metropolitan region, area fire departments have been undergoing extensive training. In early June 2004, at a simulated building collapse in Maryland Heights, Missouri the Heavy Rescue Task Force was put to the test. The Heavy Rescue Task Force is made up of rescue squads from across the St. Louis area. Rescue teams that participated in the drill came from St. Louis City Fire Department, Metro West FPD, Maryland Heights FPD, Monarch FPD, St. Charles City, Creve Coeur FPD, and Union FPD. Personnel and equipment were brought together in a team effort to hone their rescue skills. The training was part of an ongoing initiative to plan and prepare for a safer St. Louis region. Teams such as this can be deployed throughout the St. Louis Region to help during times of natural disasters or terrorist activity. For more in formation call St. Charles City Fire Chief Ernie Rhodes at 636-949-3250.
