THE HONORABLE ORRIN G. HATCH UNITED STATES SENATOR

CHAIRMAN, SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

Orrin Grant Hatch was born in 1934 in Homestead Park, Pennsylvania, to a family of modest means. His father, Jesse, was a metal lather and his mother, Helen, a devout woman who encouraged her son's love of literature and the arts. Young Orrin had many jobs to help support his family and pay for his education. At different times, he worked as a janitor, an all-night desk clerk in girls' dormitory, and a metal lather like his father. As a lather, he joined the AFL-CIO.

Senator Hatch received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and won a full honors scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh Law School. After receiving his J.D. in 1962, he practiced law in Pennsylvania and Utah, until his election to the United States Senate in 1976. He was a partner in both his Pennsylvania and Utah law firms.

Orrin Hatch filed for the United States Senate on the last possible day against an entrenched three-term Utah incumbent. Although virtually unknown, Hatch campaigned with great enthusiasm and vigor, eventually overcoming considerable odds to take the seat. He has been re-elected to the Senate three times and is now in his fourth term.

Among many congressional assignments, Senator Hatch chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee and serves as a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee. A powerful force in the Republican Party, Orrin Hatch has been quite willing, when he believed it appropriate, to cross party lines and work with Democrats, including Chris Dodd, Tom Harkin and Ted Kennedy, in particular. Since the late 1980s, for instance, Hatch has led successful bipartisan efforts on AIDS, child care, and children's health. Hatch was also a key player in the passage of Americans with Disabilities Act.

Orrin Hatch's early interest in the arts fostered a life-long love of poetry and music. Over the years, he has written the lyrics for hundreds of songs and has produced or co-produced seven CDs.

Senator Hatch and his wife, Elaine, have six children and 19 grandchildren.

* Order of the Coif, 2000

Order of the Coif

The Order of the Coif is a national scholastic honor society in law. Its purpose is "to foster a spirit of careful study and to mark in a fitting manner those who have attained a high grade of scholarship" in the study of law. The English Order of the Coif was the most ancient and one of the most honored institutions of the common law. Its origins possibly antedated the Norman Conquest. The American Order of the Coif was founded in 1912. Membership in the Order of the Coif is the highest academic honor a law student may achieve. It is equivalent to membership in Phi Beta Kappa for undergraduates, recognizing the scholastic achievement of students selected from the upper ten percent of their class.
