Exercise 1. You are the captain of the Gigantic and your boat has hit an iceberg. It is

sinking fast and you must decide very soon who on the following list of people will get a

seat in the last lifeboat. A rescue ship is coming so there is no need for long termsurvival strategies.

There are 7 seats available.

1. Ah Jung, 27, SINGLE, no children, very rich, healthy, beautiful and well

educated. She hopes to survive, get married and raise a family.

2. The President of Korea, 683. Koreas leading scientist, 60, working on a new missile for the army. He has no

family and is not married, excellent in telecommunications engineering.

4. Your best friend, very good camper

5. Your grandmother, 906. Hye soo, 5 years old, may have cancer

7. Tony, 8, blind

8. Isabel, 45, mother of 4, no job, not rich, her husband is unemployed

9. Marie, 66, grandmother of 10, widow10. Chun won, 19, just got out of jail for stealing cars

11. Leo, 25, gorgeous, famous actor, single, very rich12. Dave, 24, Koreas number 1 scientist and is researching a cure for cancer, not

married, history of mental illness

13. Sue, 34, an elementary school teacher, not married, no children

14. Jae Sun, 34, very handsome, funny, university professor, single, no kids15. Steve, 55, medical doctor, well educated and rich, father of 5, has done a lot of

volunteer work in community

16. George, 70, scientist, thinks he is close to discovering to a cure for AIDS, nochildren

17. Soo Yeun, 38, doctor, mother of 3, divorced18. Dae jung, 48, rich, 6 children with ages 7-1819. Debbie, 28, a nun

20. Suk kyu, actor, 39, 1 son, many believe he will someday be the president of Korea

21. The general (leader) of the Korean army, 6522. Un Kye sung, singer, single, no kids, 22

23. You, and remember, you are the captain

24. Young ae, 50, nurse, mother of 7, widow, nutrition expert

25. Hye soo, 42, great-granddaughter of Queen Min of the Korean Royal family

List the 7 who get a seat. Also, list the first 3 people you eliminated.

Exercise 2. Now redo the exercise as if you are on a ship in the tropics and the survivors

will go to a deserted island. Thus, they must survive until they are found. They must

survive off the land.

Exercise 3. Your best friend, Ah Jung is 28 and wants to get married. She has met six

men recently and you must help her pick the best one. She has many fine qualities. She

is beautiful, graduated from Korea University, artistic, funny, loves being outside,particularly in the mountains, loves kids and working at Cheil Communications where

she produces advertisements. She is a bit of a flirt. Who is best?

Vocabulary Romeo, eye, strict, real estate, flirt get a definition for each1. The Workoholic. The nice looking Mr. Kim, 30, is an investment banker makes

a lot of money. He went to SNU and then Duke. He works very long hours and

claims to love his job. Most nights, he has to go out drinking with his business

friends and he usually comes home very late, sometimes not at all. He says thatsince he makes a lot of money his wife wont work. She will have to stay home

and raise the kids. On weekends, they go to the mountains, but he does so

reluctantly sometimes. He says many nice things but very quiet. Moms says 8.2. The Romeo. Mr. Lee, 27 and gorgeous - knows that most women find him very

attractive. Other girlfriends said that he was always looking other girls. One time

Ah jung said that she was with him and he gave some girl the eye. Mr. Lee

says that he was young; now he is different. He is a lawyer and likes themountains. He says he has to go out drinking after work. When he comes home

drunk, he is often angry and very difficult. He thinks her job is great and says she

can continue to work. She says he can be funny and charming - sometimes. AhJung appears proud sometimes when her friends admire him. Mom says 6.

3. The Stranger. Mr. Chung, 31, is very quiet and she claims they dont

communicate a lot. She worries she does not know his true feelings as he rarelyexpresses what he is thinking or feeling. He loves kids and has a lot of respect for

Ah Jung. He says she can keep her job if they get married. He likes going

outside as well. But they sometimes sit in the same room and not say anything toeach other for an hour. She knows he loves her but worries about him being so

quiet. He is nice looking and has a good job but is not rich. Mom says 7.4. The Father. Mr. Shin, 33, owns his own business - a computer company - and is

very successful. He has a good personality and is good looking. He likes to gooutside and have fun, when he can get away from work. He says that when they

get married, she will have to work for his company and handle advertising. The

main problem with Mr. Shin is that he is divorced and has two children, 8 and 6.He says his ex-wife was crazy. He has a bad temper. Mom doesnt know him.

5. The Professor. Mr. Jae (first name Sun), 32, works for a good university and a

local business. He has good qualities and they get along very well. However, hiscompany has asked him to move to Switzerland for at least 5 years. She says he is

nice looking but says he has trouble understanding him sometimes. He doesnt

drink or smoke. He is respectful and generous. She thinks he has a strange senseof humor. His family has some real estate and she expects him to inherit some. 7

6. The Captain. Mr. Ko, 29, is a plastic surgeon and is always at the hospital. He

has a good heart and is good looking but tends to be strict. He doesnt like to go to

the mountains as he prefers movies. He is shorter than her. He is a little jealousand gets angry whenever she speaks to other men, even if it just for work. He is

great with people and they have fun together. He is sociable and says it is ok for

him to talk to ladies but not ok for her to talk to men. Mom is worried about keys.
