Marin Communications Forum – Monthly workshops continue:

Marin County Free Library – This workshop presented an overview of library programs for children, families and caregivers. It also featured a summary of the library’s “Servicios en Español” (Spanish-language services) as well as mobile and digital programs. About 45 people attended, including First 5 commissioner Dr. Lisa Leavitt, and the response was very positive. There were many ideas shared for follow-up, partnerships and community sharing.

Breastfeeding Summit – About 50 people attended this three-hour event, with a series of informative presentations: the superior nutrition of mother’s milk, legal rights in California law and “breastfeeding benefits” under the Affordable Care Act as well as support services available from Marin General and the Marin Community Clinics, peer counseling at WIC and community support from La Leche League and certified lactation consultants. The event began with opening remarks from Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County Public Health Officer (about the connection between breastfeeding and health equity, and the need to provide “360 degree support” to help every new

mother be successful at breastfeeding. (This event was presented in cooperation with Marin County HHS and the Marin Breastfeeding Coalition.)

Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County Public Health Officer, addressing the May 9th forum.

Save-the-date for upcoming events:

- May 23rd – Mental Health Awareness Month –Michelle worked with Marin County Health and Human Services to prepare an agenda for this workshop about mental health services for children and families in Marin; and we’ve had a very strong response. Presentations will include: mental health referrals through the “ACCESS” line; Marin County HHS services and Marin City Health and Wellness services; Marin Community Clinics’ behavioral health services; Parent-Child Interactive Therapy and pregnancy/post-partum support at the Family Service Agency; Power of Positive Parenting (“Triple P”) from Jewish Family and Children’s Services; “Maladaptive Role Models” from Marin City Health and Wellness and programs offered by Family Works. We also plan to feature the Early Childhood Mental Health (ECMH) project, which First 5 Marin has funded for many years. Doctora Marisol Muñoz-Kiehne will be the emcee.

Voces de Marin – Marjorie has drafted an agenda for a “National Immigrant Heritage Month” event on the impact of immigration/deportation on children and families in Marin. The event will be presented in partnership with Canal Alliance, and will focus on immigration enforcement activities, detention and incarceration, and deportation. Amy and Marjorie met with Tom Wilson from Canal Alliance to review the agenda and further plan the presentations. This event is scheduled for Monday, June 27th; outreach and invitations are underway. (For more information, contact Marjorie Delgadillo at 415/257-8555 or email [email protected].)

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Amy finalized plans with the presenters and the planning committee for our breakfast on May 13 th.

We have successfully transferred our assets to Sorrento Pacific and look forward to a good working relationship with them.

Amy attended the second statewide “Finding the next Generation” conference in San Francisco. It was a successful conference that offered insights on voter priorities and concerns from national and local pollsters, tools and tips on mounting initiatives for dedicated local funding streams for children and youth, and insights from elected officials who are champions of such efforts in counties around the state. Steve Executive Director/Staff Report 2

Kinsey was a member of the panel of elected officials who talked about what it takes to move these efforts to a successful conclusion and how to engage policy makers in the process. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom was the kepynote and he was inspiring and encouraging and knowledgeable. The trend data from the pollsters was fascninating and contrary to what the media and many pundits keep telling us: the voters are far more progressive than we are led to believe, it turns out.

Amy has been named Chair of the First 5 Association Advocacy Committee and will once again sit on the Executive Committee. This is a great opportunity to keep First 5 Marin more closely in touch with legislative efforts on behalf of children. Included in your packet is a summary of the tobacco initiatives signed by the governor (and which the Association on worked with its statewide partners) and their potential impact on commissions, and the legislative chart sent last month.
