It’s a busy time of

year for the Texas

State Athletic

Trainers’ Associa-

tion. We have

seen much pro-

gress over the

past two years thanks to our in-

volvement in concussion legisla-

tion. Special thanks to Spanky

Stephens for his leadership and

commitment to the athletic

trainers in the state of Texas.

The upcoming legislative ses-

sion will offer many opportuni-

ties for the TSATA to be involved.

On March 21st we will be host-

ing a day at the state capital to

honor many athletic trainers

who have saved the lives of ath-

letes across the state. There will

also be a proclamation from the

Legislature regarding national

athletic training month. We will

also honor those legislators who

supported our efforts with HB

2038. I invite each of you to

Austin on that day to join us in

recognizing the athletic trainers

in the state of Texas, as well as

encouraging our elected officials

to continue to put athlete safety

first during this session. With

that being said, there are many

pieces of legislation for 2013

that have been filed regarding

the high school athletes in

Texas. Much of this legislation

has been filed in past sessions

and we will continue to monitor

the progress of each of the bills

moving forward. It is important

that we keep a watchful eye on

legislation as it moves through-

out the capital. It is equally im-

portant that we are patient and

are careful how we react and

comment on each of these bills.

We are fortunate to have the

services of David Anderson at

Hillco partners to help guide us

through this process. Whether it

is concussion testing, cardiac

screening, or general athlete

safety issues, we are prepared

and willing to communicate as

needed, and as guided by our lob-

byist. I encourage you to use this

link http://capitol.state.tx.us/

Search/BillSearch.aspx to learn

more about legislation as it un-

folds. Here are a few to get you

started: HB 887, HB 68, HB 1319,

SB 573, SB 3791. As a member, I

welcome your input and recom-

mendations on these issues. In

closing, remember there is no

greater advocate for the profes-

sion and the job we do as athletic

trainers than YOU. You impact

people everyday by the choices

you make in navigating the care of

those in your practice setting.

Whether it be athletes, patients,

parents, coaches, physicians,

community members, or col-

leagues, always represent yourself

and the profession with integrity

and class. We are growing. People

are watching. Let’s show them

who we are!

Catherine Marr, President of

GHATS and Ali Langston.

Greetings to all in

Region 6.

As the craziness

known as spring se-

mester begins to start

winding down, I hope

that this newsletter and regional

update finds everyone doing well

and healthy.

In this newsletter, there should

have been information concerning

the latest happenings that will af-

fect you the athletic trainer in this

Legislative Session. I will not get on

my soapbox about this, nor will I tell

you what you should do concerning

these Bills. What I will say however

is that we (the Athletic training pro-

fession) need to contact the Law-

makers in your area and those

sponsoring certain pieces of

“important” legislation and have our

collective voices heard. If they don’t

know how a group feels, it will be

business as usual in Austin.

On another related note: Hit the Hill

(Austin) will be in March. If there is

anyone from Region 6 that has:

Saved a life using an AED since the

AED law was adopted in 2007. Or if

a student has noticed signs/

symptoms of a life threatening issue

since the adoption of HB82 in

2009. Or if you or someone else

has a positive story concerning con-

cussions since 2011, please for-

ward that information to me. We

want to highlight the positive as-

pects of these bills. There will be a

time to highlight the negative as-

pects soon enough.

If you have any questions concerning

pending legislation or there is anything

that I may be able to help with, please

do not hesitate to contact me.

Professionally,

Bubba Wilson, ATC, LAT

athletes in Texas that have suf-

fered spinal cord injuries while

playing football. This year, VATA

raised close to $7,000 for Grid-

Ensure youth athletes have direct access to health care professionals qualified to make

assessments and decisions. If a school has a library, you will find a librarian. If a school has a math department, you will find math

teachers. Students become ill, so there is a school nurse. Unfortunately, when a student-athlete sustains

an injury, only about 42% of schools have access to a qualified health care professional who is capable of

assessing and making return–to-participation decisions. We, the people, owe it to our youth to ensure

they have the necessary qualified personnel, equipment, and emergency action plans, safety and medical

protocols and procedures in place at every sporting event and facility.

This petition was started by Adam Annaconne on the White House petition site in honor of the Youth Sport

Safety Summit. In case you have not seen it I recommend that you check it out.

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/ensure-youth-athletes-have-direct-access-health-care-

professionals-qualified-make-assessments-and/NPdNCkq1

Please share it once you have signed it. This would be incredible to receive a response concerning this

important issue which was the focus of the summit. In order to receive a response it needs to reach

100,000. I don't see why it wouldn't reach that, but it needs to reach it by March 8.

Thank you to Ryan Wantz for brining this to our attention.
