Summer Highlights Green Hill PrideChristine Cuoto, Restorative Aide received recognition for her quality of care from the daughter of Green House resident, “The bond and trust that Christine has built with mom and our family is priceless. We call her the Miracle Worker.”

“Christine embodies Green Hill’s mission to empower residents, loved ones and committed staff to thrive together as family in a real home, “said Executive Director Donna Lazartic. “Christine also routinely demonstrates our values of person-directed care, all-in commitment, unconditional respect and unifying collaboration.”

The Green Hill family welcomes Beth Schwartz LSW, MSW. Beth has been working in senior care for thirteen years and received her MSW from Florida

State University. She lives in Ridgewood, NJ. “I love working at Green Hill,” says Beth. We love having her with us.

Congratulations to Green Hill Vice Chairwoman Jamie J. Raskulinecz for her recognition as a Leading Woman Entrepreneur and Business Owner in the October 2017 issue of NJ Monthly Magazine.

We also welcome Sharon Phillips South, Admissions Coordinator and Christine Njuyen, MSN, RN, Nursing and Education Supervisor.

At 100, She’s Still Looking to the FutureMargaret Hollister has had a storied life. She was born in New York City in 1917 and grew up in China, the eldest of five children of Presbyterian missionaries. As an adult, she worked as a social worker in Washington DC, retiring in her mid 80’s. Margaret published Inheriting China, a memoir about her life and experiences in China. Her family’s papers are stored in the Library of Congress. Margaret was recently featured in We The Resilient, published by Luminare Press. The book featured a compilation of submissions to the website, iwaited96years.com by women born before 1920 (when the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote), on the advent of the first female major party candidate for President of the United States. Margaret speaks Mandarin Chinese, has two sons, three grandchildren and three

great-grandchildren. She joined the Green Hill family in January 2017 to be near her son Paul who lives in Maplewood, NJ.

“I have to be honest, I looked at ten other places before I decided to move to Green Hill,” said Ms. Hollister. “Green Hill presented another way of living for seniors. They don’t ask people to be other than who they are, we are respected and the staff is incredibly friendly and responsive. I am looking for what I want to do next and they are going to provide me with the opportunity to do it.”

Margaret recently joined forces with Judy Wittler, Assistant Executive Director, to launch a “Senior Service Club” to focus on volunteerism at Green Hill and our surrounding community. Margaret stated, “It’s very important for all of us, no matter our age, to give back and serve others, which in the end is good for all.”

Apple and Carrot SaladContributed by Michiko Tomioka, RD

Apple season is here! Did you know that the apple is a member of rose family? The apple was respected as symbol of beauty in ancient Greek mythology. The apple journeyed to North America in the 16th century. The majority of nutrients come in their skins so, eat unpeeled organic apples.

This quick recipe is high in protein, fiber, vitamins A and C, and potassium. Delicious for the whole family.

1 cup Carrots, Fresh, Shredded

1 cup Apples, Granny Smith, Fresh, Unpeeled, Cored, Diced

1 cup Baby Spinach, Cut in half

½ tsp Ginger Root, Fresh, Minced

½ cup Raisins, Dark or Golden

½ cup Greek Yogurt, Plain, Low Fat

½ tsp Lemon juice, Freshly Squeezed

1 tsp Honey (optional)

You may set aside spinach to dress the plate. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients, stir well and refrigerate 10 minutes before serving.

Makes six 3/4 cup servings. Calories: 110: Total Fat: 0g; Saturated Fat: 0g; Cholesterol: 0mg; Sodium: 30mg; Vitamin A (10% DV), potassium ( 7% DV); Total Carbohydrate: 26g (only 1g of added sugar); Dietary Fiber: 2g; Protein: 3g

“Watch Your Step,” a functional maintenance program where residents are tracked for the number of steps they complete on the recumbent step bicycle. Prizes are given when benchmarks are achieved.

Restorative care and rehabilitation programs are also provided in the unique setting of the Green House® Homes. This intimate home setting with daily, familiar caregivers is evidenced by a recent testimonial about Restorative Aide Christine Cuoto, by a daughter of a Green House resident. “We call her (Christine) the Miracle Worker. The trust that has been built and the compassion incorporated in the relationship amazes us… She works with Mom as an aide, a therapist and a true caregiver.” (See Green Hill Pride, page 2)

“The Encore mission for quality of care, and Green Hill mission of person directed and innovative care for our elders is in perfect alignment,” says Donna Lazartic, Executive Director/President of Green Hill. “Response from our residents and families has been very positive. We are proud of our rehabilitation team and enjoy daily sharing of resident success stories that we call Green Hill Grace, empowering residents and committed staff to thrive together as family in a real home.”
