The President• Requirements• At least 35 years old• Native born American citizen• Resident of the US for at least 14 years

• Term• 4 year terms• Can serve 2 terms or 10 yearsHow could a President serve 10 years?

Vice President• Same requirements as President• Presides over the Senate and only votes if a tie• Assumes the Presidency if the President dies or

resigns• 25th Amendment-If President dies or leaves office VP takes over and picks a new VP

Vice President• Do not have to write down:• William Henry Harrison was the first President to die

in office– The Constitution said the VP shall assume all duties and

responsibilities– What does that mean? Become President?

• Harrison’s VP John Tyler declared himself President, took the oath of office, and served the remainder of his term

• 8 President’s have died in office or resigned from office and have been replaced by their VP

Organization of the Federal Bureaucracy• Executive Office/White House Office- Group of the

President’s closest advisors, such as Chief of Staff• Cabinet- Group of 15 Secretaries that advise the

President on issues related to their department, such as Transportation, Agriculture, and Education

Presidential Roles• Get in groups and trace a person to create an

outline of the “President”• In your groups write down anything and

everything you can think of that is a role, duty, responsibility, etc. associated with being the President

• After notes add anything you left off in a different color

• Add face to President

Presidential Roles• Chief Executive- Head of bureaucracy (executive

office, cabinet, agencies, etc.)• Chief Diplomat- Directs foreign policy (Exs. makes

treaties, appoints ambassadors)• Commander in Chief- Head of the military (orders

troops)• Chief of State- Ceremonial leader and “face” of the

United States (Ex. makes speeches, gives awards, throws out pitches at ball games, etc.)

• Chief Legislator- Proposes, passes and vetoes legislation (laws)

Presidential Roles• Chief Economist- Plans the federal budget (and

helps US Economy prosper)• Chief of Party- Head of political party (Ex.

campaigns for other party members and helps the party raise money)

• Chief Judiciary- Appoints federal judges and Supreme Court justices and grants pardons (release one person), amnesty (release group of people) or can issue a reprieve (delay punishment until reviewed by a higher court)
