LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Impact Report 2017-2018 Greetings Supporters and Friends, It’s hard to believe that we are looking back over our accomplishments from 2017/2018 already. In the moment, change was uncomfortable and frightening, but stagnant and stationary are two words that will never be associated with Family Services, Inc. By July 1, 2017, The R.K. Agarwal M.D. & Family Teen Center & Shelter was running smoothly and starting to get into a routine, welcoming youth after school and on weekends. We had sheltered a few kids and were making strides toward building relationships and a reputation as a safe place for youth to be. Our “Center for Child Justice” opened on September 11, 2017 and began seeing child victims of abuse, neglect and exploitation. The number of victims referred clearly indicated to us that this was a much needed service in Blair County. In February of 2018, after much deliberation, we closed our domestic abuse shelter and began a “housing first” model, utilizing mobile advocates and serving victims individually. It was clear that the shelter model was no longer the best way to meet the needs of victims experiencing trauma. With the new model, the hope was that we could keep victims and their children in their own homes and get the abusers out, when it was appropriate to do so. In instances where this was not the best option, family members and hoteling would be utilized with support from victim advocates to walk alongside the victim until they were no longer needed. Family Services, Inc. is an agency with many moving pieces. We are faced with new challenges every day and we seek opportunities to better serve the community. We continue to meet the needs of people when they are most vulnerable and we could not do this without your valuable support. With gratitude, Lisa Hann, Executive Director Photos: from the top: Lisa Hann Executive Director, Family Services Inc.; Blair Mill Outlet– donation for Family Shelter; Mad Beard Viking Club PA-donation for the teen center; Altoona Women’s Club sprucing up the teen center for the fall; Holy Trinity Middle School– donation of blankets and snacks to the teen center; Altoona High School Students sprucing up the teen center for the spring; Altoona Area High School Girls Club making a donation to the teen center.

Impact Report 2017-2018

Greetings Supporters and Friends,

It’s hard to believe that we are looking back over our accomplishments from

2017/2018 already. In the moment, change was uncomfortable and frightening,

but stagnant and stationary are two words that will never be associated with

Family Services, Inc.

By July 1, 2017, The R.K. Agarwal M.D. & Family Teen Center & Shelter was

running smoothly and starting to get into a routine, welcoming youth after school

and on weekends. We had sheltered a few kids and were making strides toward

building relationships and a reputation as a safe place for youth to be.

Our “Center for Child Justice” opened on September 11, 2017 and began seeing

child victims of abuse, neglect and exploitation. The number of victims referred

clearly indicated to us that this was a much needed service in Blair County.

In February of 2018, after much deliberation, we closed our domestic abuse

shelter and began a “housing first” model, utilizing mobile advocates and serving

victims individually. It was clear that the shelter model was no longer the best

way to meet the needs of victims experiencing trauma. With the new model, the

hope was that we could keep victims and their children in their own homes and

get the abusers out, when it was appropriate to do so. In instances where this

was not the best option, family members and hoteling would be utilized with

support from victim advocates to walk alongside the victim until they were no

longer needed.

Family Services, Inc. is an agency with many moving pieces. We are faced with

new challenges every day and we seek opportunities to better serve the

community. We continue to meet the needs of people when they are most

vulnerable and we could not do this without your valuable support.

With gratitude,

Lisa Hann, Executive Director

organizational skills. She has taken

over the event sheds and everything is

organized and easily accessible. She has

covered both offices many times. Lisa

has been a big part of training not one

but two front office staff within the past

six months. She watches the calendars

to see if there may be a board meeting or

some other event, so that the tables and

floors are clean in the conference room

and that coffee is made if need be.

Bottom line this person does all the little

things that most of us don’t see.

people are just not able to say “No” to this

woman. She is a force of nature to be

reckoned with for sure. Her dedication

and determination resulted in over

$26,000 for the Victim Services

Program. Not only is she a volunteer for

Family Services, she is constantly raising

funds to stop the devastating disease of

breast cancer, helping those who are

facing heartbreak and hardships in her

community, and just generally loving on

everyone.
