Clad in earthy tones, elaborate batik outfits and colourful ethnic costumes, some 250 mediators, partners and guests were present at the CMC’s annual Mediators Appointment Ceremony and Appreciation Dinner (MACAD) on 11 November 2014, which was decorated to the theme of the ‘Kampung Spirit’. This year’s ‘Kampung Spirit’ theme was an idea, which likened our mediators to the village chiefs of the past who played the roles of respected figures whom the villagers would approach for advice in troubled times. With this theme, the event area was transformed to a scene from the days of an olden Singapore – with street lamps and gunny sacks decorating the foyer area and traditional game stalls like Tikam Tikam and Bottle Bottle, set up for guests to play at, amidst the background music of folk songs like Chan Mali Chan. To add to the nostalgia, there was also a Kacang Puteh stall distributing the iconic local favourite. There was also an area with display panels which presented two key initiatives this year, which are the roll-out of a new self-help mediators portal and the production of a new mediators handbook. Through the portal, mediators will be able to access and manage their training records, as well as bid for available mediation sessions online at their convenience. The portal also includes a forum to facilitate discussions and interactions among our mediators where they can share and exchange best practices. The handbook is a revamped version from the last edition produced in 2008. Besides incorporating useful information, such as re-appointment and advancement opportunities under the Mediator Management Framework, as well as handy tips on mediation techniques, it also serves as an organiser for our mediators. 2014 ISSUE 4 A PUBLICATION OF THE MINISTRY OF LAW'S COMMUNITY MEDIATION UNIT A PUBLICATION OF THE MINISTRY OF LAW'S COMMUNITY MEDIATION UNIT SPECIAL EDITION Exclusive highlights from MACAD 2014! With everyone entertained and all smiles, the enthusiastic chatter was reminiscent of a heartwarming kampung community. It led well into the event, which opened with a meaningful multi-media presentation, unveiling the CMC’s new logo.

Gracing the event was Guest-of-Honour, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, Ms Indranee Rajah.

During her keynote address, Ms Indranee Rajah paid tribute to the CMC’s panel of volunteer mediators for their contributions and gave special recognition to those who are members of Singapore’s Pioneer Generation. She recounted the CMC’s humble beginnings in 1998 with less than 30 mediators to over 160 mediators passionately serving the community today. Besides providing an update on the CMC’s role in the upcoming Community Dispute Resolution Framework, she also highlighted on other initiatives which the CMC would be rolling out as part of its efforts to encourage good neighbourliness and considerate behaviour, which include a new self-help video on basic techniques for conflict management and workshops for conflict management at the workplace.

Ms Indranee Rajah also presented some 20 certificates to mediators who were either newly-appointed or promoted, and appreciation and recognition awards to more than 65 other mediators. One of the recipients of the ‘15th Year Appreciation Award’, Mr Quek Tee Dhye, recalled his time as a grassroots leader which first prompted him to become a volunteer mediator and said that he had always found mediation a meaningful way to resolve community conflicts, echoing the thoughts of like-minded community mediators.

Before the event ended, the emcee picked among the guests for the title of ‘Best-dressed Male and Female’ of the night. These participants gamely took up the challenge by the emcee to compete against one another by showcasing their talents through song and dance. Coupled with witty lines from the emcee, laughter was drawn from the audience as the night drew to a close.

The CMC hopes to keep this ‘Kampung Spirit’ alive within the community where it continues with its mission – ‘Building Bridges to Reconciliation’, thereby creating a more cohesive and harmonious society which we call home.
