An Evening at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2511:30am-5pmThe Penn Reading Project, sponsored by the Council of Undergraduate Deans, creates an opportunity for the Class of 2021 and Penn faculty from all disciplines to share a unifying intellectual experience through a single text, film, or painting. This year’s selection is Walter Isaacson’s The Innovators, which is a masterly saga of collaborative genius destined to be the standard history of the digital revolution—and an indispensable guide to how innovation really happens.

All freshmen are required to attend an introductory presentation featuring Penn faculty. Later in the afternoon, freshmen will meet with their small groups to discuss their essays submitted through Canvas and The Innovators with a faculty discussion leader.

With the kick off of PRP 2017, the Office of New Student Orientation and Academic Initiatives will launch the Year of Innovation, featuring programs and events intended to engage the entire Penn community in exploring innovation and the many ways it shapes our lives. Visit the theme year website for more details at www.pennyoi.org.

Toga Party at the Penn Museum

SUNDAY, AUGUST 279pm-11pmTake a journey through time with the Penn Museum. Experience renowned collections from around the world. Dine in the magnificent Chinese Rotunda, and dance among the statuary of mighty pharaohs. The Penn Museum invites you to this unique Penn tradition.

In the spirit of the night, all are invited to dress in the garb of the ancient world, and togas abound – some beautiful, some outrageous, and all radically creative. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes, while the DJ keeps things hot for those who like to dance, and the scavenger hunt lures you into gallery after gallery.

Experience the only reconstructed palace outside of Egypt—the palace of New Kingdom pharaoh Merenptah (r. 1213-1204 BCE)—and stand face to face with the largest sphinx in the Western hemisphere, weighing in at 13 tons. The sphinx passed from Ramesses II to Merenptah, from father to son, and now guards one of the most impressive collections of Egyptian artifacts in the United States.

Explore our newest exhibition, Cultures in the Crossfire, shedding light on the ongoing destruction of cultural heritage in the Middle East. By juxtaposing contemporary art with ancient artifacts, this exhibition seeks to tell the stories of the cultures of Syria and Iraq through time as well as the efforts being made to combat the loss of the region’s irreplaceable cultural heritage.

To learn more about the Penn Museum’s fascinating history, collections, exhibitions, research, and student events & opportunities, visit www.penn.museum.

Location: Enter the Penn Museum through Warden Garden, 3260 South Street, right across from Franklin Field.

With proud support from the Undergraduate Assembly.
