INTRODUCTION Welcome to Singapore

Welcome to sunny city of Singapore! This small island of 682 square km has a lot to offer. It’s modern, sophisticated, service oriented mindset has attracted visitors from all over the world and Singapore is proud to be the heart of South East Asia. Language There are 4 official languages in Singapore: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English. Singaporeans are bilingual, and speak their mother tongue as well as English. Malay is the national language. Airport Tax A Passenger Service Charge of S$21 should be incorporated in the air ticket. You may purchase the airport tax coupon in advance at most hotels, travel agencies and airline offices if this is not done. Visa and Entry Facilities A valid passport or international travel document is required for all visitors. You will be given a 14-day social visit pass on arrival. You may apply for your student pass during NUS Registration period. These information will be made available in your acceptance package. ASEAN Visa-free Facility Citizens of the ASEAN countries holding valid passports can visit Malaysia and Thailand for 14 days without a visa. For Philippines, the country only requires a visa for a stay exceeding 21 days. For Indonesia, the country offers two months visa-free entry for tourists, provided they have an onward ticket and use designated ports of entry and exit. Transportation in Singapore You may travel by train (Mass Rapid Transit – MRT), buses and taxis around the island. For travel via MRT and buses, you may use an ezlink card, a stored-value cash-card which is used to pay for MRT and bus fares. The ezlink card is a cheaper alternative to paying for single trips. It can be bought from any TransitLink Ticket Office at $15 (consisting of non-refundable $5 Card Cost and a travel value of $10).

Standard-value tickets (valid for single trip only) may be purchased from General Ticketing Machines (GTMs) located at all MRT stations. You may refer to respective town map to get your way around by bus. It’s hassle-free. Ask any locals and they will be pleased to assist you to get to your destination. Tap your ezlink card onto the card reader and enjoy the bus ride. Bus fare can cost from $0.64 to $1.65 per trip with an ezlink card, or $0.90 to $1.90 per trip with cash fare. Transfer rebates of up to $0.50 will be given if commuters make a transfer within 45 minutes after tapping out of the bus or LRT/MRT. Taxis are available everywhere. Basic fare are from $2.80-$3.00 for flag-down of standard taxi and additional of $0.20 for every 385 meters. Additional fare will be charged for midnight, peak hour, public holiday and Central Business District (CBD) surcharges. There will also be additional fare for advanced booking. Payment can be made by cash, nets or credit card. Before boarding, please confirm with the taxi driver on the payment mode.

Currency The local currency is Singapore dollars and cents. Other than the Singapore dollar, the United States and Australian dollars, Japanese yen and British pound are also accepted in most shopping centres and big departmental stores. Money Changers You may change money at banks and hotels. And most shopping complexes have a licensed money changer. Visitors are advised not to change money with an unlicensed operator. Most banks open from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm on weekdays and 9.30 am to 11.30 am on Saturdays. Credit Cards Major credit cards are widely accepted in Singapore. Hotels, retailers, restaurants, travel agents and even a taxi company readily accept international credit cards. If you are 18 years old or above and are arriving from a country other than Malaysia, you may use the following duty-free concessions for personal consumption:

Beer,stout or ale : 1 litre There are no concessions on cigarettes and other tobacco products. This is in line with the Singapore government's campaign to discourage smoking. If you are carrying excess dutiable items, you may leave these in Customs Bond until your departure, provided this is from the same point of entry. Storage costs are chargeable.

Dutiable items include garments and clothing accessories, leather bags, wallets, imitation jewellery, chocolate and sugar confectionery, pastries, biscuits and cakes. Restricted amounts of these items may be brought in duty-free, provided they are meant for personal consumption. Prohibited items include:

Controlled drugs and psychotropic substances Firecrackers Cigarette lighters of pistol/revolver shape Toy coins and toy currency notes Reproductions of copyright publications, video tapes or disks, records or

cassettes Endangered species of wildlife and their by- products Obscene articles and publications Seditious and treasonable materials

If you have any of the articles listed, entry will only be allowed when you produce the import permit or authorization from the relevant authorities. A visitor who has medicines which may only be obtained through prescription under Singapore law, especially sleeping pills, depressants, stimulants, etc, must possess a prescription from a physician confirming that the medicines are used for the visitor's physical wellbeing while travelling. The above lists of dutiable, non-dutiable, prohibited, controlled and restricted goods are not exhaustive. Drinking Water Singapore water is clean and safe to drink from the tap, and need not be boiled. Exit Formalities Customs There is no export duty. Export permits are required for firearms, ammunition, explosives, animals, gold in form, platinum, precious stones and jewellery (except reasonable personal effects), poisons and drugs. Any goods in excess of reasonable personal effects should be declared at exit points and an Outward Declaration form prepared, if need be. For inquiries, call the Airport Customs Department at +65 65427058. Littering To maintain the clean and green city, there are strict laws against littering of any kind. First-time offenders face a fine of up to S$1,000. For repeat offenders, it's a fine of up to S$2,000 and a Corrective Work Order (CWO). The CWO requires litterbugs to spend a few hours cleaning a public place, for example, picking up litter in a park. The litterbugs are made to wear bright jackets, and sometimes, the local media are invited to cover the public spectacle. Naturally, the authorities hope that public shame will make diehard litterbugs think twice about tossing their scrap paper or cigarette butt on the roadside.

Medical Facilities Singapore's medical facilities are among the finest in the world, with well-qualified doctors and dentists. Most hotels have their own doctors on 24-hour call. For an ambulance, dial 995. There are many government/public, private hospitals around the island. Pharmaceuticals are available from numerous outlets including supermarkets, department stores, shopping centres and hotels. There are hundreds of clinics (private and public) around the island. Costs of medical services in Singapore for locals are heavily subsidized by the Government. If you are foreigner, you may need to pay a higher amount when using the facilities; however, it is still affordable compared to many other countries. Post Office/Telecoms Basic postal services are available round the clock at the General Post Office and the Comcentre branch. International Direct Dialling (IDD) is available at the General Post Office and the Comcentre. IDD calls can also be made from the numerous phone card and credit card phones located at post offices and around the city area. Phone cards come in five denominations of S$2, S$5, S$10, S$20 and S$50 and are sold at Singapore Telecom service outlets, post offices, convenience stores and some retail shops. A 20% levy is normally imposed on IDD calls made from hotels. Electricity Singapore's voltage is 220-240 volts AC, 50 cycles per second. Most hotels can provide visitors with a transformer, which can convert the voltage to 110-120 volts AC, 60 cycles per second. The power plugs used in Singapore are of the 3-pin, square-shaped type.

Smoking Smoking in public buses, taxis, lifts, theatres, cinemas, government offices and air-conditioned restaurants and shopping centres is against the law. First-time offenders may be fined up to a maximum of S$1,000. While it is an offence to smoke in air-conditioned eating places, smoking is not prohibited in air-conditioned pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots. Tipping Tipping is not a way of life in Singapore. It is prohibited at the airport and discouraged in hotels and restaurants where there is a 10% service charge. Weather and Climate Climate is not a major consideration. Singapore has a warm and humid climate throughout the year with a daily average temperature range of 24C to 32C. Rain falls throughout the year, with more consistent rain coming during the monsoon season from November to January. Showers are usually sudden and heavy, but also brief and refreshing. So, remember to bring an umbrella everyday. Although it may be humid outdoors, the indoor temperature ranges from 16C to 24C due to the use of air-condition.

What to Wear Since Singapore is warm and humid, it best to wear light clothing (cotton is the best). When indoor, especially in the lecture theaters, conference rooms and even shopping malls; do bring a sweatshirt or jacket as it may get chilly. Do wear comfortable shoes too since there are so many places of interest for you to explore. Getting Around NUS Coming from Changi Airport, it is advisable for you to take a taxi. The fare will be around $30. Taxis are easily accessible at the airport. If you have made arrangement with your buddy, do remember to inform him/her on the arrival date, time, flight terminal and number. Please have your buddy’s contact number ready so that you can contact him/her once you reach Singapore. There are many ways to go to National University of Singapore. If you are staying off-campus, you may take the following route: Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train Please have your ezlink card ready. Alight at Clementi MRT Station. Take a 5 minutes walk to Clementi Bus Interchange and board SBS Transit Service 96. Alight at the Central Library and take NUS Shuttle Bus Service A1 or B that will take you to NUS Business School. Cultural Resources NUS offers a rich tapestry of activities to promote arts and cultural life on campus. The Centre for the Arts, NUS Museums and the University Cultural Centre are also national emblems of our rich cultural heritage, and have played host to various international and local arts and entertainment events. Secure Plug-and-Play Network SPnP is the acronym for Secure Plug and Play that provides registered users an efficient, convenient, secure and affordable network connection throughout the university campus without compromising network security. SPnP is live network access point that allows user to connect his/her laptop or notebook computer and gain access to the network services anytime anywhere on campus. The National University of Singapore is the first institution of higher learning offering SPnP access with a total of 8,000 access points at strategic locations starting July 1998 after a successful pilot run for six months. Integrated Virtual Learning Environment (IVLE) The Integrated Virtual Learning Environment provides a one-stop access to a rich repertoire of IT-based teaching and learning resources. Almost half of all courses offered are now available online. They range from simple course outlines with lesson plans to sophisticated multimedia online courseware. The courses are linked to related overseas sites broadening the knowledge reach of our students. Postal Services Kent Ridge Post Office located at Level 1 of Yusof Ishak House provides full facilities such as telex, telefax, IDD calls, speedpost, renewal of TV and driving licenses, money order, etc. Instant passport-sized photographs can also be taken in the photo-booth located in the post office. Postage stamps can also be purchased at the NUS co-operative bookstores.

NUS Food Outlets The University has five canteens, four cafes and two take-away kiosks serving both staff and students at the Kent Ridge campus. The food is sold at reasonable prices and they range from Asian, Muslim, Indian to Western food. During term time, many stalls open as early as 7.30 am and close at 4.00 pm. Several stalls are rostered to operate till 7.30 pm.

Parking Facilities Staff, students and visitors can choose to park FREE-of-charge at 2 fringe car parks, i.e. Kent Vale Car Park 6 and the CRISP Car Park (Car Park 10A) at Kent Ridge Road next to King Edward VII Hall. They can take the Internal Shuttle Bus (ISB) Service from there to various campus locations, thus making it very convenient to park and ride on campus. NUS Co-operative Bookstores There are four such bookstores on campus. Items on sale include books, stationery, computers, computer peripherals, phonecards, URA car parks coupons, etc. Housing on Campus NUS accommodation is available to International Undergraduate Non-graduating Exchange (NGE) students only. Due to overwhelming demand, we are currently unable to provide an NUS accommodation to Non-Exchange students (NGNE) as well as Non-graduating Graduates. About the NUS Business School The NUS Business School is one of the eleven faculties/schools in the National University of Singapore. The School’s degree programs offer students a global perspective with an Asian focus. They include the BBA, MBA, NUS MBA Double Degree with Peking University, S Asia MBA, Asia-Pacific Executive MBA (English and Mandarin), UCLA-NUS EMBA, MSc (in research based programs) and Doctor of Philosophy. The NUS MBA program has been ranked among the top 3 in Asia-Pacific by Asia Inc. since 1999 and amongst the top 100 in the world by FT and EIU. Located about 12 km from the city centre, the University's main campus at Kent Ridge occupies approximately 150 hectares of one of the most scenic areas in Singapore. It is well served by communication links, being 20 minutes by car from the airport, close to one of Singapore's main expressways, served by several bus routes and familiar to taxi drivers. Modules and Credit Transfer Exchange students may take a maximum of 5 modules during Semester 1. Annex A provides additional detailed guidelines on examination rules and regulations. All students are to ensure that they are familiar with these guidelines. Final Examinations MBA Office determines the examination dates for MBA modules. Request for taking early exam will not be entertained. Medical or Other Problems Students who are unable to sit for their examinations or who are hindered from completing their examinations are to inform the MBA Office directly. This should be done before or immediately after the scheduled examination.

Evidence should be provided of the condition, which must be severe enough to prevent successful completion of the examination. Absence from Classes Regular class attendance is strongly encouraged. Students are strongly advised not to miss consecutive classes. A student who has to be absent from classes for valid reasons should seek approval from their instructors. Students must inform the MBA Office for any absence of more than one week Preparation for new environment A positive attitude is very important as adjustments would have to be made. You may initially feel lonely and homesick and experience some form of "culture shock". Be rest assured that most new international students experience these feelings, but with a positive attitude, a spirit of adventure and flexible thinking, you will soon overcome them. Maintain your perspective and check whether your expectations were too high. Keep an open mind and do not withdraw, but mix with the other students and participate in student activities and sports. Student's Attire To maintain the good image of the NUS MBA and the School University, students must be properly attired on campus. Proper attire for classrooms is smart casual attire. REGISTRAR’S OFFICE Examination Rules

Self-screening

1. You must screen your own health condition before coming to campus for examination. If you are sick or have a fever, do not come for the examination. You should consult a doctor to complete the form NUS Examinations: Request for Special Consideration (RO.171/03). The completed form must reach your Home Faculty by the stipulated deadline.

Candidate’s Belongings

2. You are responsible for the safekeeping of all personal belongings you bring to the examination venues. The University will not be responsible for the loss or damage of any such belongings.

3. You may not bring audio equipment and communication devices, including but not limited to pagers, mobile phones, radios, and MP3-players, into the examination rooms.

4. You may not: a. bring in or take out from the examination b. receive from any person while in the examination room any

unauthorized books, papers, documents, pictures, or other things. Candidates breaching this rule will be liable to disciplinary action which may result in his/her expulsion from the University. At the Start of an Examination

5. No candidate will be admitted later than one hour after the start of the examination

6. The identity of all candidates taking University examinations will be checked during the examination. Please bring your matriculation or identity card and place it in prominent view

7. You must familiarize yourself with the instructions printed on each answer book. In particular, you should note that all examinations are anonymous. As such, you must write your matriculation number, and not your name, in the space provided on the cover of each answer book.

During an Examination

8. During an examination, you are not allowed to communicate with one another 9. Raise your hand if you wish to communicate with an invigilator. You may not

leave your assigned seat without the permission of the invigilator. 10. If, for any reason, you are allowed to leave the room and return, you must

account for this brief absence from the examination room by indicating and initialing, in the invigilator’s records, the time of exit from and re-entry to the examination room.

11. If you fall ill during, and are unable to complete, an examination, you should

alert the invigilator so that suitable arrangements may be made to ensure you receive medical attention, at the University Health and Wellness Centre or otherwise, immediately.

At the End of an Examination

12. No candidate will be allowed to leave earlier than one hour after the start of the examination or during the final 15 minutes of the examination.

13. At the conclusion of the examination a. remain seated quietly while your answer booklets are being collected

and counted; b. leave any other used or unused answer booklets on your desk; and c. do not leave the examination room until you have been told to do so

by the Chief Invigilator.

You may take only your own copy of the examination question paper with you upon leaving the examination room.
