Black FridayBlack Friday is a term for the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. The term dates back to at least 1966 and by 2009 it was being used on the local news on television. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thurs-day in November in the United States, Black Friday occurs between the 23rd and the 29th of November. Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employees have the day off (with the exceptions of those employed in retailing and banking), which increases the number of potential shoppers. Retailers often decorate for the Christmas and holiday sea-son weeks beforehand. Many retailers open extremely early, with most of the retailers typically opening at 5AM or even earlier. Some of the larger retailers (depending on the loca-tion) such as Sears, Macys and Walmart have been reported to open as early as midnight on the start of Black Friday in localized areas and remain open for 24 hours throughout the day until midnight the following Saturday. Upon opening, re-tailers offer doorbuster deals and loss leaders to draw people to their stores. Although Black Friday, as the first shopping day after Thanksgiving, has served as the unofficial begin-ning of the Christmas season at least since the start of the modern Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the term Black Friday has been traced back only to the 1960s. The term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia in reference to the heavy traffic on that day (see Origin of the name Black Friday below). More recently, merchants and the media have used it instead to refer to the beginning of the period in which retailers go from being in the red to being in the black (i.e., turning a profit).

4 EXCHANGEPUBLISHING.COM - 11/27/09 SPOKANEThanksgiving... Thanks to Lincoln During this bicentennial year marking Abraham Lincolns birth, The Exchange has printed a series of articles about his life and career, dealing with relatively little-known facts about the great man and other leaders of our nation. As we near the years end, we are left with the question of what the Lincoln legacy should be. Take away his presidency, what Theodore Roosevelt called his bully pulpit, and youre left with a man of small deeds, arguably the least qualified by anything in his educational, political and military back-grounds to ever hold that office.Who would ever carve a bust on Mount Rushmore of a one-term congressman if that was the highest elective office hed attained? However, as the 16th President, there was much he accomplished that shaped America for generations af-terward.The legacy of Lincoln, then, boils down to a handful of ac-complishments: (1) His conduct of the Civil War (2) His speeches and writings (3) Measures to expand the econo-my, specifically to open the West to settlement and (4) How he wanted America to celebrate its greatness. Far more cel-ebrated writers than me have explored the first two items, so well touch on just the last two subjects.Today, immigration is a thorny issue, but in the decades af-ter Lincolns death America welcomed many thousands of immigrants with open arms, including three of this writers four grandparents. Lincolns enthusiastic support of the Homestead Act and the transcontinental railroad provided the teeming masses with not only cheap land, but also the means to first get there, and secondly, a quick and economi-cal way to ship the products of their labor to market. Not since Thomas Jefferson had a president come along with such a vision of a continent stretching from sea to sea under the banner of one great republic. Lincolns Gettysburg Ad-dress recalled a period of four score and seven years since America declared its independence. After him, in about the same length of time, the great continental nation envisioned by Jefferson and Lincoln grew to become the most powerful on earth. Lincoln never travelled beyond a few miles west of the Mississippi River and always had a hankering to head farther west (he came close to being the first governor of the

922-3456 EXCHANGE WANT ADS - 11/27/09 5Oregon Territory.) His dreams ultimately became the ones that many more would realize. As a poor farm boy who undoubted dreamed of a better life in far-off places, young Abe had two treasured books in his log-cabin library that laid the foundation for realization of his dreams. For a leader to emulate, he read Parson Weems biography of George Washington, and for the moral and spiritual guidance to help reach his goals, he had the Holy Bible. When he became president, Lincoln believed that we as a nation should celebrate fully the one who would join Lincoln and the aforementioned Jefferson and Roosevelt on that Rushmore rock. Thus, Lincoln began the tradition of what we now call Presidents Day as an official holiday for George Washington on his February 22nd birthdate. The other holiday that Lincoln decreed should be an annual event was Thanksgiving Day. Almost every president from Washington on had proclaimed a Thanksgiving holiday each year, but none had ever gone beyond making the proclama-tion for more than just that specific year. As Washington and the other founding fathers realized, the notion of an official state religion, as was common in the Old World at the time of Americas founding, was something to be abhorred, but not to be forgotten was the hand of Providence that guided them and would continue to guide us in the future.Since Lincoln decided that Thanksgiving should be an annu-al holiday, only the U.S.A. and its neighbor Canada, among all the great nations of the world, have set aside a national holiday called Thanksgiving in which we offer our thanks to God for our manifest blessings and divine protection we have been provided. When we gather with family and friends on that day, let us also give thanks to a great leader that gave us such a rich and long-lasting legacy.Dale Roloff

Top 5 Family Thanksgiving TraditionsBy Kimberly PowellTraditions are a big part of the Thanksgiving holiday, and every American family has their own way of celebrating. From stuffing the turkey to taking in a football game, here are the five most popular. 1. Turkey and Trimmings. From the first Thanksgiving to todays turkey burgers, turkeys are an American tradition dating back centuries. According to the National Turkey Federation, 95 percent of Americans eat turkey at Thanksgiving. Regional twists offer variations on the traditional roasted bird, including coffee rubbed turkey from Hawaii, salt encrusted turkey from New England, and deep fried turkey from the South. 2. Time Out for the Pigskin. Throughout the United States, football on Thanksgiving Day is as big a part of the celebration as turkey and pumpkin pie. Dating back to the first intercollegiate football championship held on Thanksgiving Day in 1876, traditional holiday foot-ball rivalries have become so popular that a reporter once called Thanksgiving a holiday granted by the State and the Nation to see a game of football. 3. Parading Around. The first American Thanksgiving Day parade was held in 1920, organized by Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia, not Macys as most people believe. The NYC Macys Thanksgiv-ing Day parade tradition actually began in 1924, and has grown into an annual event of balloons, bands, and floats, enjoyed by more than 46 million people each year in person and on TV. 4. Making a Wish. Does your family fight over the wishbone from the Thanksgiving turkey? Known as a lucky break the tradition of tugging on either end of a fowls bone to win the larger piece and its accompanying wish dates back to the Etruscans of 322 B.C. The Romans brought the tradition with them when they conquered England and the English colonists carried the tradition on to America. 5. Giving Thanks. Last, but certainly not least, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year. From pre-meal prayers to providing holiday meals to the homeless, the holiday is truly a celebration of praise and thanksgiving.

What a sweet and good boy! Not only is he well behaved, he also has a personality to match. He is gentle and affectionate. He knows sit and he is good on leash. He scored all 1s and 2s on his SAFER test. He is about 9 years old and he weighs about 75 pounds. He would make an excellent addition to a home that wants a calmer dog. Please come in and check him out. For this or many other wonderful pets available for adoption, please contact the Spokane County Animal Shelter at 509-477-2532 or visit our website at www.petfinder.com/shelters/WA113.html and click on Our Pet List.SAFER (Safety Assessment For Evaluation Rehoming) Dog Behavior Evaluation Program. The SAFER Test focuses on learned behaviors, sensitivities, and problem solving. This Test provides shelter staff with the ability to evaluate a dogs behavior accurately and efficiently improving the chances that the adopted dog will remain in his new home. The SAFER Test Process: (1) The Stare Test gives clues regarding the dominance and submission of an animal. (2) The Sensitivity Test assesses social skills, sensitivity levels and level of fear. (3) The Tag Test determines dominance ag-gression and fear aggression. (4) The Pinch Test determines sensitivity, dominance and lack of bite inhibition. (5) The Food Aggression Test determines food aggression. (6) Dog-to-Dog Aggression Test determines sociability with other dogs. The SAFER Test uses standard grades 1 through 5. A dogs grade is the lowest grade received on any portion of the test. 1 & 2 dogs are easily adoptable. 3 & 4 dogs may need behavior modification or be only appropriate for experienced owners. 5 dogs are clearly unsafe dogs and not made avail-able for adoption. If you have an upcoming event you would like published in Dog Pause, send it to: Dorothea, c/o The Exchange, PO Box 427, Spokane, WA 99210 or call: 509-922-3456, toll free, 1-800- 326-2223 or e-mail [email protected].

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSEby Baxter Black, DVM
How'd Ya Hurt Yer Nose?I was wounded. I got cracked across the bridge
of my nose. Not that my nose needs to do anythingto attract attention. As one friend put it, Bax, ifyoud lie at on your back in the sun, we couldtell time!
Of course, the next day I had a big showin Durango. I knew I would be answering theinevitable question, Howd you hurt your nose?My rst thoughts on how to handle it includedseveral clever riposte like; I was swatting ieswith my branding iron, or, When my wife askedif I thought the dress made her look fat, I gave thewrong answer. or, I burned myself trying to pulltoast out of the toaster with my teeth, or, My hairblower turned on me like a snarling koala bear!
But those answers seemed so mundane. I neededa reason betting my heroic cowboy reputation; We were driving a herd of range cattle over the bigdivide. The trail was steep and narrow. Suddenlya little black-bally calf slipped off the edge andlanded ten feet down on a ledge no bigger than aVolkswagons oor mat!
I quickly dropped my loop over my saddlehorn, dismounted and using the tail of my rope Idescended the cliff wall and reached the calf. It wasas I lifted him to the safety of the trail rim that hestepped on my nose to make the last scramble tothe top. My heart sang as I saw the mama welcomeher baby as he nuzzled under her ank. All in theline of duty, I thought, wiping away a tear.
ORI could have been riding night herd whenlightening cracked and the cattle stampeded! I rodefor the front before they reached the river breaksand managed to rope the leader. But one of mydallies wrapped around my head! I couldnt let goor wed have lost the herd!
OR I was returning an eaglet who had fallenfrom his eyrie, and his mother, misunderstandingmy intentions, attacked me! OR I was injured whileauditioning for a spot on Dancing with the Starswhen my adagio came loose and I slid across theoor unintentionally biting the ankle of one of thejudges!
Truth is, in the dark of night I walked into aRegulator clock hanging on the wall. Im hopingmy wound will eventually heal and look like a birthmark instead of the trafc-stopping hood ornamentit does now!
Oh, and do you wanna know the time beforeI get back up?
The entire set of Morgan Horse books by Ellen FeldBlackjack, Dreaming of a Morgan Horse; Frosty, The Adventures of a Morgan Horse; Rusty, The High-Flying Morgan Horse; Robin, The Lovable Morgan Horse; Annie, The Mysterious Morgan Horse; Shadow, The Curious Mor-gan Horsemakes seven with Rimfire, The Barrel Racing Morgan Horse. Ive read a few of them, but my teenage granddaughter has read them all.
The fictional Rimfire is a great story about the Gang from Gallant Morgans Farm centered around teen Heather Richardson who goes to Oklahoma for a short vacation with her folks and gets hooked to the maximum on barrel racing in all its exciting forms. It takes her awhile to learn that controlled speed is cool. When she returns home to Maine she convinces her friend Nicholas and his family to buy Rimfire and sign on for the excitement of the sport. He does, Rimfire excells, and Heather adds another horse into her world. This one is another blast, like the other Morgans she owns.
Where modesty is a hallmark of Heathers personality, it certainly shows in this story. In Rimfire, her honesty is

confounded by impetuous judgement and, ultimately as the story unfolds, courage and love for horses sets everything straight. Above all, Rimfire is the story of how friendship prevails. The authors son, Nicholas, won the real Rimfire in a national essay contest sponsored by the Berkshire Morgan Youth Club. If you have kids who love horses you could do no better than familiarize them with this series.
