National Day of Service The club completed a total of twenty-two, 3-hour shifts distributing food at Project SHARE of Carlisle in support of the club’s National Day of Service. Project SHARE serves about 1,100 households each month with the goal of providing a week’s worth of groceries for a family of four. The following club and family members provided 66 hours of assistance from October 15 - 19, 2019: Rick Bonner, Susan & John Murray with Jessica Murray, Lynda Cook, Anne & Walt Wood, Linda & Bob Taylor, Linda & Ken Stoltz, Jodi & Dennis Nielsen with Sophia

Boltz, Bill Knouse, and Jean & Bill Yufer with Jake Stine.

October 8, 2019 Fire Chief Jeffrey Snyder from the Carlisle Borough Fire Department provided information about the history and the current operations of the fire department. Originally, Carlisle had 5 volunteer fire companies. Each company had a unique reputation, so volunteers were drawn to the one that fit their personality. Instead of using a bucket brigade, we now have modern equipment in the fire departments. Carlisle Borough is now down to two volunteer fire departments: Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services and the Union Fire Company. Chief Snyder covered their training requirements. All training and uniforms are provided free.

October 22, 2019 Diane Hoover with the American Dairy Association North East provided information about dairy farming operations in Pennsylvania. Diane and her husband own a family run dairy farm about an hour away from Carlisle. They have milk 350 dairy cows 3 times a day every day of the year at 5 am, 1 pm and 9 pm. Each cow produces about 90 pounds of milk every day. Additionally, they have about 420 non-milking cows. In 1900 there were about 6 million dairy farms in the USA, but in 2019 it dropped to 2 million farms. About 16 percent of those farms are in Pennsylvania.

A Few Words from the President . . .

Well, it looks like fall is transitioning to winter, with all of the accompanying wind and cold. Fortunately, that should not impact the Exchange Club of Carlisle’s busy schedule. It is that time of year when we get to enjoy each other socially while supporting the Carlisle community. I believe this holiday period provides each of us with the opportunity to socialize with one another’s extended families. We begin by honoring Veterans Day on the 11th of November, with the retiring of the flags in downtown Carlisle. If you have not participated in this event in a while, please feel free to do so, and bring family members and friends. The 8th of December provides each of us with the opportunity to celebrate the true meaning of

the Christmas spirit with the Children’s Christmas Party. Come and help ensure these children have a chance, perhaps there only opportunity, to realize a Christmas celebration. A few days later, 11 December, we are at the Carlisle Country Club, where we gather with friends and family to share the Christmas spirit and socialize with those we may not see on a regular basis. A flyer will be coming shortly that outlines the menu and cost. Suffice to say, it will be basically the same great menu and associated cost of previous years. This is a wonderful time to bring family and friends. It is also that time of year when we recognize the “Exchangite of the Decade.” Put this event on your calendar now! With all the celebrations and holidays, we have again modified our regular meeting schedule. November 12th will be our last regular meeting. With the 14th of January being our first meeting of the new year. As with any of our meetings or social events, if you need any assistance in participating please contact me or one of your board members. Linda and I look forward to seeing each of you during the upcoming holiday period.

Bob
