Be inspiredAs you approach the beginning of GCSEs or Sixth Form, you’ll be facing some important choices about your learning. You’ll know that getting these decisions right will set you on the path to a great career. We’re really pleased that you’re thinking of coming to UTC Reading and taking advantage of the many opportunities we can offer you.

With us, you’ll be able to follow your areas of interest in either computer science or engineering while studying GCSEs, A-levels and getting invaluable practical skills from the best in the industry. This is because UTC Reading has the support of local, high profile industry and academic partners who help to shape the curriculum and work closely with our students.

We believe that students who attend UTC Reading, rated Outstanding in all categories by Ofsted in 2015, are given the best start in a variety of progression routes – last year our students progressed on to university, an apprenticeship, a sponsored degree programme or employment.

UTC Reading will offer you something different. And we expect you to want something different:

to follow your interest in computer science or engineering while studying for your GCSEs or A-Levels

to learn differently through challenges and projects set by our industry partners

to want the best chance of moving into employment or further and higher education in your chosen field

If you enjoy learning through doing, want to benefit from the latest technology and be in an environment that feels more like being at work than school, then UTC Reading could be for you.

We hope our guide will inspire you to find out more about the great opportunities we have to offer at UTC Reading and we would warmly welcome you to join us in September 2016.

A UTC is different from the average school because it has support and backing from local, high profile industry partners who are involved in the development of the curriculum. Each UTC also has academic partners who help make sure that it really can offer students the best of both worlds.

This means you can take advantage of real-world based study of a UTC’s specialist subjects while still taking the GCSEs and A-Levels that you would at school.

UTCs are for students aged 14 to 18, as this is the age when you’ll have a better idea of what you are really interested in and whether you would enjoy learning in high-tech surroundings.

The UK needs advanced technical skills at all levels if we are to prosper. Whether in manufacturing, wind farms, rail links or high-tech hospitals, we need a workforce that can develop new products, stretch and reuse existing resources, and meet the challenges of the future. UTCs are meeting the needs of the skills gap and by 2016 more than 30,000 students will be able to follow this new technical education pathway.

What I’ve loved about being a student at the UTC is the study environment and the facilities available to us. I feel like I’ve been given many privileges compared to students at other schools because of the high quality teaching and the large number of industry partners linked to the UTC.

Working with the industry partners gives us the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with the business environment. Through projects with the partners, I’ve worked with different companies, gained knowledge about their business and had the opportunity to talk to their managers. Through these networking experiences I’ve had work experience with Cisco and an internship with Sytel Reply, where I continued to develop my technical and interpersonal skills.

The other big benefit of being at the UTC is being able to gain professional qualifications. My Microsoft Technical Academy (MTA) and Cisco CCNA 1 qualifications helped me to stand out at the Cisco apprenticeship assessment day.

I want to develop a career in networking and work at Cisco, and to help me achieve this I have been accepted on to Cisco’s apprenticeship programme. My time at the UTC helped as it gave me experience of working with large IT organisations and allowed me to specialise in networking during my extended bTEC diploma.

UTC Reading is an inclusive learning environment, and that includes girls who want to build a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) industries.

We are committed to supporting girls who choose to study STEM subjects and build a career in technical industries. In partnership with the WISE campaign, we’ve established the South East WISE hub and work with local businesses and schools to proactively encourage and empower girls to study and build a STEM-based career.

CoMputer sCienCe and enGineerinG are not Just for Boys

Myth: Boys are better at mathematics and science than girls.

Reality: boys and girls are both capable of excelling in mathematics and science. Research by WISE and the Royal Engineering Academy found that girls achieve better or equal grades than boys at GCSE in most STEM subjects, and those that choose STEM at A-Levels achieve higher A*-C grades.

Myth: Girls don’t like technology.

Reality: Girls are very interested in technology, but cultural differences in the way boys and girls are raised typically limit the experiences girls have with different technologies.

Myth: Women can’t succeed professionally in engineering careers.

Reality: Engineering is still a male-dominated profession, but women can and do build successful careers in this field. WISE interviewed 300 female engineers and 98% said their job was rewarding.

being at the UTC has given me some amazing opportunities to get to know different businesses. I’ve had work experience with Cisco and We Know Data. During my time at We Know Data I developed a programme they could use in their office to manage their projects and deadlines. I’m now in discussions with them about future opportunities at the company. Without being at the UTC, none of this would have been possible.

During my time at the UTC, I’ve gained Microsoft Technical Associate qualifications in software development fundamentals (in C#) and networking development fundamentals. having these qualifications gives my Cv a boost as they are well-known, as well as developing my knowledge and skills.

hello and welcome to UTC Reading. As you decide whether the UTC is the right place for you, we wanted to tell you a bit about our time here.

At the UTC we have really flourished due to the learning environment and facilities available to us. It’s much more grown up and we have been given independence in how we work and learn best. having access to the independent learning zones at the centre of the UTC are extremely useful for working on our own and in a group.

We have a wide range of enrichment choices ranging from arts to sports at the UTC. As President and vice President, one of the things we’ve done is work with students to be their spokespeople and ensure enrichment reflects everyone’s interests. This year we worked with students to launch the UTC’s first football team.

We hope you move to the UTC and are excited about the opportunities that are ahead of you. See you soon!”

1Peter Brett Associates – Reading train station regeneration

Peter brett Associates (PbA) created a brief to re-design the space between the new Reading train station and interchange with consideration of the community, surrounding buildings, sustainability and economic viability.

Teams had to complete research, develop initial design concepts and create their final design using CAD (computer aided design) technology and a scale model using the UTC’s 3D printers. Throughout the project, students attended lectures run by PbA, who also provided a mentor to each team. The mentors met four times with their teams, providing expert guidance and giving support and feedback.

The project finished in an exhibition-style presentation. Judges spent time at each team’s project space, shortlisting five teams to present their ideas at a formal presentation at PbA’s offices. The judges found the decision difficult since all teams were professional and confident in their final presentations. Ultimately it was brunel 4 who impressed the judges most with their creative flythrough built in gaming software Minecraft, heathrow check-in and sleeping pods.

eMployer proJeCts and CHallenGesLeading, local employers are behind UTC Reading, helping us to design and deliver project-based learning and challenges using real industry issues and scenarios. by working with an employer on an industry relevant project, you will build the relevant skill sets, plus meet industry standards and expectations which will prepare you for life in the workplace.

Project-based learning

Project-based learning is a key part of life at the UTC and is fully integrated into day-to-day lessons and learning experiences. Every student takes part in the projects working with others from across all year groups. Each project is linked to all parts of the curriculum from English and geography, to science and IT.

2Students had to research, design and build a hypothetical level crossing for the local area. As part of the brief from Network Rail, Sytel Reply and FileMaker UK, teams had to consider disruptions to both the train service and road users during construction and when the crossing was in operation, plus the safety of maintenance staff when they carry out checks on the line.

Students organised between themselves who would take on roles such as project manager, mechanical specialist and data collection specialist. Each team was assigned an industry mentor who supported them throughout the project.

2D and 3D CAD software and a 3D printer were used to create their level crossing. Teams had to demonstrate to a panel of judges how their custom designed database worked and the coding they created to control their level crossing works on a hornby train set. Five finalist teams were shortlisted to present their project to a panel of industry judges.

The judges said that the winning team – brunel 4 – stood out because of the safety considerations and advanced use of coding to control the level crossing system.

3Cisco – classroom of the future

Cisco challenged students to design a classroom of the future that showcased the latest in technology and benefited not only UTC students, but key stakeholders in the local community, such as primary schools.

As part of the challenge, students split into teams to work on different competences - project management, physical security, virtual security, business case and marketing. They were mentored by employees from Cisco who gave invaluable insight and advice.

Students attended workshops and seminars led by Cisco that were relevant to their project role to broaden their understanding in areas such as project management skills, routing and switching of networks and project budgeting.

In the final weeks of the project, teams submitted their online project and marketing plans. IT teams spent an afternoon testing their online security and virtual security and business case teams had to present to a panel of experts on their elements of the project. Cisco awarded prizes to the best team for each competency and awarded an overall prize to Code.

Andrei Chirovici, 15

Since joining the UTC, I’ve enjoyed taking my IT studies to the next level by working on different projects. The Cisco classroom of the future project was great because it was IT focused and gave me the opportunity to learn how to set up a large scale networking system. It also gave me the opportunity to learn from the Cisco mentors when they visited the UTC as they shared their knowledge and experience.

I’ve also been part of a pilot social media course with Social Retail Group and Fujitsu. I learnt about social media, how to use it as a marketing tool in a business and how to develop a social media strategy and activity plan.

I feel like I’m being prepared for the world of work as everything we do – the longer hours, dress code and projects – are similar to the business environment.

This gives huge scope to work and study a topic of your own choice. It is equivalent to an AS-Level and is valued by universities as it will demonstrate your skills in project management, communication, time management, research and writing.

Jake Devon, 18

Sixth former Jake Devon has taken up an unconditional offer to study business management at bournemouth University.

he said: “UTC Reading is very different from my school sixth form. It’s the best choice I could have made and I was lucky to get in at the last minute. There are loads of activities and projects and because it specialises in computing and engineering it is much more focused. It was really good to be able to get the extra professional certificates like Cisco and MTA Microsoft exams. I was less stressed at home because I did my work during the day. I think it will really prepare me for managing my time at university. I would recommend the UTC to anyone wanting to go into computing or engineering.”

I’ve enjoyed having access to lots of technology at the UTC, as I love working with computers. It’s also been great to learn in a professional and mature environment – I’ve seen first-hand from being at Microsoft and CGI that the UTC is similar to the workplace.

I originally applied and had an interview for the CGI apprenticeship programme, but they thought I’d be better suited to their sponsored degree programme, so I took part in the assessment day and interview. because of all the projects I’ve worked on at the UTC, I was able to give relevant and detailed answers in all my interviews.

I’ll be starting the sponsored degree programme in September, I’ll spend one day a week at University of Winchester studying information systems and the rest of the week working and learning at CGI. It’s the best of both worlds and I’m really pleased to have this opportunity. I really feel like my career is beginning now.

Right at the heart of the UTC campus is what makes us really different. Our independent learning spaces offer a flexible, hot desk office working environment. You will pick up the habits and skill of planning your time and moving between individual desk work, meetings, briefings and practical tasks.

teCHnoloGy We believe that it is important that students not only have an in-depth understanding of technology but that they also understand how it is used in a day-to-day environment. You will be continually challenged in your IT skills and how to apply them in digital art, scientific work, music, humanities and sport.

enriCHMent Enrichment activities take place twice a week as we believe learning is enhanced by sports, arts and leadership building initiatives. The UTC has an indoor hall for games, dance and performance studio, fitness suite, music room and playing fields.

Students launch UTC football teamSince joining the UTC, Year 12 students Sean and Jack have organised for football training to be added to our enrichment offer, held trials for students to join the team and found a kit sponsor.

“We set up the football team because after working so hard throughout the day on our academic studies it’s great to have a release. Lots of us enjoying balancing our studies with sport – I think you need the balance to be happy.” said Sean.

Jack agrees and enjoyed setting up the team because he got to meet students from across the UTC: “Getting to know new students was one of the best parts of setting up the team. We’ve got a lot of new friends because of it.”

Music with The Rock Academy FoundationAs well as making the UTC their base, The Rock Academy Foundation has been working with our students to develop their musical talents. During enrichment, students have the option to continue to build on their musical skills, learn to play different instruments, write and produce music or practice with their band. bands and solo artists also have opportunity to perform at our termly student celebrations.

This means that applicants living close to UTC Reading do not have priority over other applicants within the other part of the catchment. A set percentage of places will be allocated for young people living in each of the grouped post code areas as shown on the map below.

How to applyThere is now a co-ordinated admissions process In England with exchange of information between Local Authorities (LA). This means that you must apply to your home LA.

are you ready to Move froM sCHool to utC readinG? We believe that there are many very good reasons to choose UTC Reading at 14. however, we also understand that the decision to change school at 14 is a big one.

In Year 9 as you lead up to your transition to UTC Reading we will work with you, your family and your existing school to make sure that you are making the right decision. In making the move from school to UTC Reading it is important that:

you are not deciding on your own, but that you have the support of your existing school and your parents or carers

you come to taster events that we put on to get a feel for the UTC and what it will be like studying here

you come and talk to us

you take advantage of the support, guidance and welfare on offer

What matters to us is that you have made the right decision.
