Our goal is to become a leading, world-class academic and teaching hospital, bringing the best possible medical care to our patients. Right now, our researchers are working on more than 80 projects in critical areas of health such as cancer, cardiac services, rehabilitation, orthopaedics, gynaecology and obstetrics. They intend to transform these projects into breakthrough treatments that ease suffering, improve care and, ultimately, provide our patients with the best possible outcomes. Global collaborations Through the work of our Epworth Professors, the Epworth Research Institute has strong links with Melbourne, Monash, RMIT and Deakin Universities. We also participate in collaborative research with other local, national and international research groups, as well as exploring our own research areas. In addition, Epworth HealthCare has a world-first affiliation agreement with the renowned United States (US) teaching and research hospital, the Cleveland Clinic. This affiliation provides a unique opportunity for our junior medical specialists to gain international experience in clinical training and research that will ultimately benefit all Epworth patients. Epworth Medical Foundation raises funds to support innovative research studies at Epworth that transform and save lives, while also providing new equipment, capital development and specialist services. The Foundation was established in 1982 to generate much-needed philanthropic support for the activities and equipment needs of Epworth HealthCare. Our goal is and always has been to ensure patients at Epworth receive the best possible care and outcomes. Therefore, funds we raise are used to contribute to and improve the excellence in medical care provided by Epworth HealthCare. Epworth is an outstanding healthcare organisation but, if we are to achieve our mission of becoming one of the world’s truly great academic and teaching hospitals, we rely on philanthropic support. Why research matters Medical researchers are trailblazers and visionaries, and we owe much of our health – and that of our families – to their dedication and quest for knowledge throughout history.

We are the beneficiaries, for example, of Howard Florey, the Nobel Prize-winning Australian chemist whose role in producing penicillin started the antibiotic revolution and saved tens of millions of lives. Other modern scientists have developed vaccines that protect our families from polio, smallpox, whooping cough and cervical cancer; pioneered complex, life-saving procedures like organ transplants and foetal surgery; and uncovered treatments that stem the spread of once-devastating diseases, like the bubonic plague.

Yet sickness, injuries and disease can still attack us and the people we love, which is why Epworth HealthCare has committed to build, support and resource its research programs. It is our goal that patients at Epworth – and across Australia and the world – will benefit from the research that is carried out here, hand in hand with our daily hospital activities.

And your philanthropic support will be critical to our success.

What you can do We believe that medical research has the power to make a difference. Research is the key to providing the best medical care possible.

But Epworth is a private, not-for-profit hospital and, as such, we receive very limited government support. It is thanks to the generosity of our donors that we are able to continue this life-saving research at Epworth.

And in order to grow our research activities, we need your support. By making a donation to Epworth Medical Foundation today, you can help support important research activities that will ultimately provide preventions, new treatments and even cures for our patients.

Make a difference today

Why research matters Meet our researchers

Epworth researchers are determined to make a difference. A difference to how diseases are understood, how care is delivered and, finally, to ensuring that our patients are offered the best treatment options available in the world.

Professor Rod Sinclair, studying skin cancerProfessor Sinclair leads a research study that aims to identify the cancer stem cells and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of non-melanoma skin cancers. Non-melanoma skin

cancers account for 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancers in Australia. The insights from this study could potentially lead to vaccines and topical therapies to treat the skin cancers as an alternative to surgery.

Professor John Olver, studying stroke Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability, and half of all patients who survive a stroke are dependent on others to help them with their daily activities. Increasing evidence demonstrates that physical activity

may prevent further strokes, so Professor Olver is leading a study to assess exactly what levels of exercise will reduce the chances of a secondary stroke.

Dr Megan Robertson, studying elderly careDr Robertson is leading a study that will provide a better way of understanding the way health services are utilised by the elderly in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to improve

their health. This is important because close to 20 percent of all patients who present to our Emergency Department are 80 or older, and their needs have not been well documented or understood.

Professor Andrew Wilson, studying heart failure Professor Wilson is leading a new clinical trial to assess the effectiveness of a new drug that will target the heart muscle by improving its pumping activity, and reducing the distressing symptom of breathlessness as a result

of heart failure. We hope this drug will provide ongoing, long-term benefits to the 30,000 patients who are diagnosed with chronic heart failure in Australia every year.
