StarStruck’s “ALTAR BOYZ” is a Heavenly Hit!
By Cindy Gessey/Contributing Journalist
It was a packed “congregation” at Stuart’s StarStruck Theatre on Palm Sunday for the last performance of
“Altar Boyz,” a humorous and affectionate story of a traveling Christian boy band. “Altar BOYZ” was the
ninth longest-running Off-Broadway musical of all time with 2,032 performances from 2005 to 2010. The
occasion is the final concert of the “Raise the Praise” tour performed by band members Matthew, Mark,
Luke and Juan…and Abraham, the renegade Jewish member. The Boyz perform dance, Latin and ballad
style songs which give an often amusing and touching overview of the origins of the group and of each
member’s personal history and personality. Throughout the show, they eagerly monitor the “Sony Soul
Sensor” that gives a digital readout of the number of souls saved and finally reaches “0” after much
persuasion of the audience and band members, including comical individual confessions.
The show, directed and choreographed by Josh Rhett Noble, was irreverent without being disrespectful
and was all-inclusive in its message. According to locals and long-time StarStruck fans Pat and George
Shepherd of Hobe Sound, “It was an interesting contrast since we just set up the altar for Palm Sunday
service!” A favorite of the crowd was “Church Rulez,” a hilarious account of the Catholic (“Big C”) Mass
with its succession of directions to “sit, stand, kneel.”
Most wives will attest that it’s difficult to get one man moving in the right direction, so it was amazing that
the five stars –Xander James, Matt McClure, Josh Rhett Noble, Cody Rogers and Matthew Ryan
Thompson -- were so precise in their dance moves! The dialogue and singing was often fast paced, and
there was no problem in the clarity and understanding of every word. Peter Jones was properly devout
as the Voice of God. The quality of the performance was especially impressive, given that there was only
a two week period between the closing of “9 to 5: The Musical” and the opening of this show.
StarStruck Theatre has upcoming performances for local actors and fans of all ages. TeenStars will
appear in “Grease” from April 25-28, and from July 5-7 “Shrek the Musical” will feature actors in grades 7
to 12. Mini-stars from kindergarten to second grade will make their mark in Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh”
on July 11 and RisingStars from grades 3 to 7 will perform Disney’s “Aladdin” on July 12 and 13.

StarStruck's "9
To 5: The
Musical" is a 10! By Cindy Geesey
Contributing Journalist
Having seen "9 to 5: The Musical" in New York City, I was thrilled when I learned it would be playing in
Stuart's own StarStruck Theatre. The show was based on the 1980 movie, Dolly Parton added music and
lyrics, and it hit Broadway in 2009. Sunday was my first time attending a show at this hidden Treasure
Coast gem, and I told myself to keep my expectations low since it was just a local production. However,
the cast, music, sets and overall experience just blew me away!
While Allison Janney got a Tony nomination as Violet on Broadway, Jennifer Jones' performance is even
more amazing to me. Her attitude as a beleaguered office manager, used and abused by her boss, is right on
target. Unlike Ms. Janney who often spoke or yelled the lyrics, Ms. Jones' singing is perfection.
Local Jean Ferreira plays Judy (Jane Fonda in the movie, Stephanie J. Blocke on Broadway), and her acting
and voice are excellent. She shows her range of talent while evolving from a timid mouse starting her first
job to a strong woman standing up to the boss. Even more commendable is the fact that she's served this
community as a teacher at J.D. Parker Elementary School for the past 17 years - bravo!
Carla Holbrook takes on the formidable role of Doralee whom Dolly Parton played in the movie and
Megan Hilty (Wicked on Broadway and now in Smash! On TV) played in New York. She makes the role
her own with a sauciness that was appealing and with a voice that is powerful.
Elizabeth Casalini plays dual roles as the boss's officious and nosy right hand Roz and as the dance captain.
Her upside down on-the-desk split has to be seen to be believed!
Now for the men. Josh Rhett Noble plays the lusty but lovable boss, Franklin Hart, Jr., and his experience
as a New York theatre veteran shows. His performance is every bit as good as that of Marc Kudisch's on
Broadway, if not a bit better, in my opinion. His range of facial expressions is amazing! Matt McClure
brings a new focus to the role of Joe, Violet's boyfriend, and I know I've seen him before in his previous
award winning TV reporter/host roles in either New York or Georgia. Both Noble and McClure were the
directors of "9 to 5" and so deserve great credit for their work in this fabulous production.
"Altar Boyz," starring Noble and McClure will run March 21-24 and "Grease" (with the TeenStars) April
25-28. Call 772-283-7787 or visit www.StarStruckFL.com for tickets. I have!

Scholarship program helps
struggling families February 20, 2013
STUART — From an early age, David Wise could be found
singing, dancing and putting on performances for his family
and friends. It was evident that he had talent and a passion for
the performing arts, but as he grew older he began to
understand that, although he loved singing and dancing, it
would be too difficult for his family to take on the financial
burden of enrolling him in musical theater classes.
Fortunately for David, and students in similar situations, one community organization has been working to provide
young people with the opportunity to pursue their dreams and get involved in the arts. With support from corporate and
private donors, Martin County-based nonprofit Artists for a Cause (A4AC) created a scholarship program to assist
students and families with the many expenses that come along with participating in visual and performing arts.
“Research has shown that participation in visual and performing arts has a positive effect on young adults," explained
Terry Barber, founder and executive director of Artists for a Cause. "But unfortunately during these tough economic
times, not all families can afford to sign their children up for dance, piano or theatre lessons. This is when we step in to
lift some of the burden off of parents’ shoulders.”
During the last two years, a partnership between A4AC and StarStruck Performing Arts Center, the largest performing
and visual arts education institutions in Martin County, has resulted in more than 40 students receiving training in their
arts discipline of choice, despite their families financial challenges. In addition to A4AC scholarships, StarStruck also
awards need-based and talent-based scholarships to students.
For David Wise, the scholarship he received from A4AC has allowed him to enroll in musical theater classes at
StarStruck.
“From the costumes, to the classes and performances, participating in the arts can be really expensive," Wise said. "The
scholarship from Artists for a Cause has been a huge help to my family financially and has allowed me to pursue my
dreams of performing on the big stage.”
All A4AC scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need. To maximize the range and efficiency of the
program, Artists for a Cause recently announced the implementation of new measures for the screening of prospective
scholarship recipients. Scholarship applicants are required to submit documentation showing their financial need and a
written statement addressing why they are interested in becoming involved in the arts.
To date, most funding for scholarship students at StarStruck has been accomplished in partnership with A4AC. Private
and corporate donors are able to earmark their donations specifically to the A4AC Scholarship program.
“It brings us so much joy to be able to assist so many children and families through our scholarship program. Our goal
is to continue to keep today’s youth involved in the arts regardless of their financial struggles,” says Terry Barber,
executive director of Artists for a Cause.
Wise credits his personal values of dedication and discipline to what he has learned from his involvement in musical
theatre at StarStruck.
“The arts have made such an impact on my life and after I graduate from Martin County High School this spring, I
hope to continue pursuing my passion of performing while I attend college.”

Stuart's StarStruck Theatre brings a special touch of Broadway to its
2012-13 Professional Series opener this weekend.
"Little Shop of Horrors," the pop/rock musical comedy, stars
StarStruck alumna and Broadway actress Alicia Tomasko as Audrey.
In 2010, the former Palm City resident spent a whirlwind month performing in Broadway's "In the Heights," a Tony award-winning musical
about life in Washington Heights, N.Y.
Tomasko, 23, has a Cinderella story within a Cinderella story regarding her first role on Broadway — she landed it at her very first
professional audition.
After singing, dancing and reading for "In the Heights" at a casting call in Fort Lauderdale, she left thinking it was a great experience even
if she wasn't a shoo-in for a part.
"I thought it was a don't call us, we'll call you type of thing," Tomasko said.
Two months, later she got a call asking, "How fast can you get here?" Arriving in New York, she made hurried arrangements to stay with a
friend, who, coincidentally, lived in Washington Heights.
She began rehearsals as an ensemble vacation fill-in and made her Broadway debut one week later.
"I will never forget that first moment, it was so thrilling," Tomasko said. "It was incredible."
That same week, she was appointed as third understudy for the lead role of Vanessa. Four days after her ensemble debut, with just three
Vanessa rehearsals under her belt, a series of unexpected illnesses with the first two understudies meant the nod went to the third and last
understudy — Tomasko. In a matter of minutes, she was whisked down to wardrobe and then out on to center stage mid-song in the first
act.
She continued on in the lead role through the weekend and afterward in the ensemble for a month. The show closed in January 2011.
Now a full-time New Yorker, Tomasko continues to audition and, like many actresses in the city, subsidizes her career working at a
restaurant. She said her co-workers, a group of would-be performers, are nothing like the cutthroat, catty stereotype. They support each
other, often switching hours to accommodate audition schedules.
Although October is a big audition month in New York, Tomasko is happy to combine a trip home to see her family with another StarStruck
addition to her resume. She started as a sixth-grader at the performing arts center.
"Their productions are extremely well done," said Tomasko. "I've never seen a bad StarStruck show."

Classic 1950s
harmonies will take
you back in “Forever
Plaid” comedic
musical coming to
StarStruck Theatre By Curt Devine
Thursday, March 8, 2012
"Forever Plaid," a 1950s-themed musical, will bring slapstick comedy and classic harmonies to the
StarStruck Theatre in Stuart beginning March 15.
Director and choreographer Josh Rhett Noble said the show, which originally gained popularity off-
Broadway in the '90s, appeals to all generations with its clever storytelling and timeless music.
"It's a funny, funny show, but it also strikes heart chords with real characters and emotions," said Noble, 31.
"Forever Plaid" tells the story of the all-male singing group, The Plaids, who, while on their way to perform
at an airport cocktail bar, suffer a fatal collision with a bus full of Catholic schoolgirls traveling to see The
Beatles.
Having missed their big opportunity, the singers return from the afterlife to present the audience with an
80-minute concert including songs such as, "Undecided," "Chain Gang," "Crazy Bout Ya' Baby," "Heart
and Soul" and "Magic Moments."
"These songs bring back such fond memories for everyone," Noble said.
Local musician and co-owner of StarStruck Theatre Peter Jones will play piano as the four lead actors sing
rich four-part harmonies, all the while squabbling over their comedic shortcomings.
Although the show is 80 percent music and 20 percent dialogue, Noble said as a director, he highly values
characterization and tried to develop the show's roles to deeper levels.
Noble also performs in the show as Sparky, The Plaids' jokester. The group is rounded out by Jonathan
Cummings as Jinx, the insecure, nose-bleeder; Xander James as Frankie, the asthmatic leader; and Matt
McClure as the worrisome Smudge.
Noble said the talent of these local Treasure Coast actors, some of whom moved down from New York, is
reason enough to come see the show.
"You're going to love, laugh and be impressed by all that they do," Noble said. "I feel beyond blessed to be
working with them."
