EXAMPLES OF PUBLIC RELATIONS PROJECTSThis list may spark some other ideas that would work well at RadfordUniversity. Just choose an idea and go for it!I. The University Community

    A. Administration and Faculty

    1. Host monthly faculty dinner nights.2. Print book covers with Greek information on it.3. Volunteer to collect data for a university project. Science Department,Psychology Department. These departments often have severalopportunities for questionnaires, surveys, experiments. This issomething simple to do; going to the Department Chair andvolunteering 30 men for any project would be beneficial andsomething that they can have in their back pocket. It also showsthat Delta Chi are interested in academics. This could also land a

potential tutor or additional help/support in areas of weakness fromsome of the brothers.

    4. Sponsor a university blood drive. American Red Cross does thesepretty frequently on campus. The honor fraternities usually sponsorit, but why not help sponsor it too? There are a lot of things tomove in and out and it would be impressive if a group of guysalleviated that task for them. Also, if they are not looking foradditional sponsors then DONATE! That is a huge communityservice and a really big deal if 30 men donate. Do the math; youwould save at least 90 lives! Pretty impactful.

    5. Send congratulatory notes to faculty or administrators for theiroutstanding work(See Section VI). The Dedmon Award is given to faculty for theirachievements throughout the scholastic year. Write a letter to therecipients of these awards. Write a congratulatory letter for aprofessor that got a book published something extraordinary. Whynot sponsor a faculty member? Get your name out there andnominate everyone who has positively impacted you as well as RU!It isnt hard and it gets you ready for the future by filling out formsand writing letters, etc.

    6. Sponsor a faculty appreciation day (e.g. Host an open house). Seeabove.

    7. Sponsor an event for faculty children. (E.g. Easter egg hunt.) Awesomeidea! Do it at Bisset; do it at Dedmonwherever! This is a greatway to do a good deed. Take donations or collect cans for

admission into the egg patch and donate them to a charity. Win win situation all around.

    8. Sponsor an Outstanding Professor contest. Nah

    9. Donate books to the campus library. Better yet, why not donatebooks to the local library? Old textbooks? Books that you wouldhave to buy for classes, novels, political, theory, etcif you cantsell them back and get $5 donate them! You can write it off on yourtaxes too!

    10. Serve as tour guides for the university. You should do this. Itdoesnt take too longonly 2 tours a week or something like that. You get a free shirt and have meetings with great food too! It alsois a resume booster and a great way to recruit a bit too. Whatbetter way to keep tabs on possible brothers? Check in on them

    and weed them out!

    11. Distribute flowers to secretaries in the administration building onSecretarys Day. Take them to the Presidents officethe one over inMartin Hall. Have flowers (white carnations of course) for all of theladies there. It is such a nice and small gesture which is impactful.A local florist may donate them or cut you a deal if you tell themwhat you are doing!

    12. Sponsor an on campus lecture series on current issues. With Dr.

Burke on your side you are set up for success. Maybe he gives alecture or presentation about campus violence in wake of the April16 tragedy at Virginia Tech? Take donations at the door and donatethem to the Hokies Spirit Fund. Get other groups, fraternities, sororities, etc. to participate. Maybe a whole day of fun. Have acookout, a presentation, a kickball war, etc

    13. Sponsor a fraternity/faculty athletic competition with mixed teams (playsoftball, volleyball, etc). See above14. Sponsor a tea or reception for faculty wives; present each with a white

carnation.15. Work with your admissions office in student recruitment (e.g. visit highschools; participate in a phone-a-thon, etc.). This is seriously a goodgig. All you need to do is contact the Foundation or the AlumniAssociation (Lucas Hall) and tell them that Delta Chi will call forsome nights. This is the good part you get paid and you get freefood. HA! Isnt that awesome? If you want to be even moredistinguished and lock in this gig, give back the money you receive

as pay and if it is enough set up a fund or donate it to the Jimmy Vor cystic fibrosiswhatever, but make them aware that is what youintend to do because maybe they will match it!

    16. Organize an annual campus beautification project. The campus is

always beautiful, but do those individuals get recognized? Probablynot. Go ask and see if they have a huge project that they needsome help with and volunteer your time one day.

    17. Go Christmas caroling to university administrators homes. I dontknow how or if you sing, but you could pair up with the musicfraternity, Phi Mu Alpha (Camm is an alum) or Sigma Alpha Iota andget them with you to do the majority of the singing. Those groupsneed good publicity so help them out!

    18. Sponsor a reception to introduce the Greek Advisor to chapter members.

You should be doing this at the beginning of the semester tointroduce yourself to him/her. It also puts in good light of who youare and what you are about as well as getting on the same page ofhis/her expectations. Also you should do this for Dr. Burke to thechapter and for the associate members.

    19. Present an annual gift to the university. Do this when there ismoney to blow. This isnt ever! But you could replace money with acommunity project. It is still a gift, right?

    2. Encourage student groups to meet in your chapter house; it shows themthat Delta Chi has their support. Only if the House is CLEAN! Firstimpressions go a long way.

    3. Print an insert about Delta Chi for the campus newspaper. You shouldbegin to write a recap of what Delta Chi has been doing at leastonce a month. Try to get it published in the Tartan. Send it and

send it. Even if it doesnt get published you are making the effort. At the end of the semester take all of the articles and make anewsletter with it and send it to the alumni, parents, HQ potentialRUSHs and RU administration. Make them aware that Delta Chi isbenefitting the school and vice versa. Journalism majors anyone?!?!4. Assist with residence hall move-in during the first week of school. 16. Encourage a chapter letter day on a regular basis (it shows pride in DeltaChi). Unis or Red/Buff days. Should be doing this already.

    17. Host a recognition reception for ALL students on the Deans list (not justGreeks).

    C. Greeks Delta Chi is doing the majority of the things in theGreek section. So there is no use to fix something that isntbroke. However you could clean it up a bit. Who documents whatyou do? Is there a Historian? There should be something that

signifies your time period and be proud of. Also there needs to besome spirit in how Delta Chi got to where it is right now. You shouldoften remember that and let the alumni know that and tell themwhat is going on!

    II. City

    A. Neighbors

    1. Initiate a neighbor who has been helpful in neighborhood relations.

Alumni Initiations! You need to have at least 4 per year! This isgood because you have no clue to what this person can bring to thetable.

    2. Organize a public service weekend where the chapter does odd jobs (cleanups, rake or mow lawns, etc.) for neighbors, then host a dinner. Thiswould work if there are families living around the house, but do notdo it for college students. This is imperative for people who will

  • 7/29/2019 Examples of Public Relations Projects

appreciate the gesture. You could set up a table on a side road oron the yard and have people walking have some water or whatnot.

    3. Schedule an open house for neighbors. Back to the HouseCleanliness!

    7. Participate actively in neighborhood associations you are taxpayers andhave a vested interest in the future of your neighborhood.8. 9. Send thank you notes, Christmas cards, etc. This is easy to do...buyreally cheap ones at the beginning of the year from Hallmark whenthey mark things down. The send them the next year. You shouldsend them to City Council, the Radford Delegate and the StateSenator of the area as well as the University Administration.Perfect gentleman gesture!

    10. Welcome new neighbors to the neighborhood. I think everyonearound you will know who you are and where they are living, butthis is good to be a good neighbor. Sit in the year in chairs and

Radford. How many things do you really know about what isdecided? This is your way for a VOICE. With a voice comes power!a. Register chapter members to vote in your college town; local officials aremorelikely to be concerned about a chapter of local voters than students who areregistered in other communities.b. Drive senior citizens to the polls. This is really cool. Contact theRegistrar and the Political Science Department. Put out flyers inRadford and surrounding areas. You might even get commended forthis by the city and that is a huge honor.

    c. Assist with voter registration of senior citizens, the handicapped, andcollege students. Set up a table in Heth; help the CollegeRepublicans or Democrats raise awareness about this. Being in afraternity is about utilizing the experiences you have in order to bea gentleman. If you agree, which you should, then do the following.
