Instructions to ExaminerThe examiner discourse below should be used with each and every test taker to ensure a consistent testing experience for all. The information in normal text is to be read aloud. The information in italics explains what you should do.

Examiner to Test Taker

& Welcome to the CaMLA Speaking Test. My name is ________, and I’ll be giving you the test.

& What is your name? Wait for the answer.

& Would you spell your name please? Write down the test-taker’s name on the scoring sheet.

& Thank you, _______. Say the test-taker’s name.

& This test has 5 tasks and lasts about 10 minutes.

& The tasks are printed on the test card. I’ll also read them aloud to you.

& There are no right or wrong answers on this test. Be sure to say as much as you can in the time allowed. I will tell you when your time is up.

& Before we begin, do you have any questions?

& Now we are going to start the first part of the test. Hand out the test card. Part 1 faces up.

& In this part of the test, you will describe a picture and complete some tasks. Read aloud Task 1 (below); point to the image.

Start the stopwatch. After 60 seconds have elapsed, say:

You have been offered a new job. It sounds like a good opportunity to learn different skills, but your boss will be your old friend from high school. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking this job? 90 seconds

Task 5

The city government wants to build a new train line to solve traffic problems in the area. Your friend’s house would need to be torn down to make room for this new line. I am a city government member. Tell me what you think about this and try to convince me to agree with you. 90 seconds
