 You will notice that each question is divided into four parts – a, b, c and d. When we do exam practice we will concentrate on one or two parts of a question, not the whole question. So today we are looking at parts a and c.

How are they marked?

The (c) questions

tExplain how a religious upbringing can lead to, or support, a belief in

God. (8 marks)

Christians usually teach their children to pray to God. This will make the children believe that God exists because otherwise their parent would not want them to pray

to him.

If God did not exist they and their parents would not waste their time praying to nothing. Also they may feel God presence (numinous) when they pray. They have

been brought up to pray so they believe God exists.

Another feature of a Christian upbringing is going to church. When children go to church they see lot of people praying to God and worshipping his so they are bound

to believe he exists. .

Many Christian parents also send their children to a church school. Here they will have RE lessons teaching them that Go exists and the children are likely to believe what

the teachers tell them are true.

4 marks given for further developing their first point and writing in clear English. 4 marks would also have been given for a second

developed point.

6 marks given for a further developed reason.

Christians believe that sex before marriage is wrong because a child should be brought up in a secure environment with a mum and a dad. If the parents aren’t married then they might not stay together.

Christians believe that sex is a good thing and a gift from God but it shouldn’t be misused. This is because the Bible says not to have sex before you are married and Christians follow this teaching.

marks) Some Christians think that having sex

before marriage is OK but only if you are in a long term loving relationship and you want to get married one day (you aren’t going to split up). The Church of England believes this.

marks) Christians believe that promiscuity (sleeping around) is wrong

because sex should be with someone you love and trust. You wouldn’t want to have a baby with someone who you didn’t trust.

Christians also believe that children should be brought up in a secure environment – this means with a mum and a dad who are married. This is because they are less likely to split up if they are married.

Christians believe that sex is a gift from God but the Bible has some rules about when it should be done. The Bible says sex before marriage is like adultery and the Ten Commandments forbid adultery.

Some Christians do allow sex before marriage if the couple are in a long term relationship. This is because they are intending to

get married in the future. Protestant Christians believe this.
