Horner’s Corner
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends,
we’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come in-
side. But this show is not for enlightenment, elucidation
or revelation, it’s about competition. You want to best
your friend, your co-worker, everyone in the league, the
best ball, the tournament. It’s about stroking one of the
three divisions of the psyche, Mr. Ego. You don’t want
the competition to make that three foot par putt and you
shouldn’t laugh out loud when their tee shot goes in wa-
ter on number four, but it’s Mr. Ego in the background
pulling the strings. Even though competition is the one
way we measure ourselves against our peers and placate
our inner voice, in reality, the real world, there is but a
few exceptions when you play defensively, it is you, not
hoping the worst for your opponent, but you against the
course. This show is about you competing against your-
self and the adversary is the course. So this year work on
Mr. Ego by working on your own game, it’s not that time
consuming as a lot of people would suggest. Too many
people show up right at their tee time, don’t work on
their game and expect to play their best?? We have a
driving range (I can give you directions to it), we have a
chipping area and we have not one but two putting greens.
One hour a week, hit one or all three and you might be
surprised and be more competitive, and still no laughing
out loud at others misfortune.
The show starts on March 15th for the posting of scores,
through November15th. I will continue to maintain our
website and have printouts for the years events hope-
fully beginning in early April. Come inside the shows
about to start, guaranteed to blow your head apart, rest
assured you’ll get your money’s worth, “the greatest show
in heaven, hell or earth”. (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)

Golf Course Superintendent
Hello Elks members! As I write this and the entire na-
tion is in shear panic but it’s business as usual for the
maintenance department. I feel the groundhog was cor-
rect with an early Spring. We could have our first 65
degree day during the 3rd week of March and that will
definitely get the course greened up sooner than normal.
With the first golf outing being scheduled for April 19.
Spring greens aerification will be done just like last year,
as soon as possible. I know this disrupts play but it’s a
very important ingredient for my maintenance program
to have the best playing surface and root base going into
the Summer months.
Winter maintenance on equipment went very well with
the addition of our new mechanic Martin Paulini. He has
many years of experience in the golf business and will
be a fine addition for the success of the Elks. As of March
11, all equipment and golf carts are serviced and ready
for operation. Unlike years past, it’s safe to say that this
is the best the equipment fleet as been in a long time and
I am confident it will stay this way.
Some noticeable changes you will see on the course
include; 10 trees removed this Winter (3 behind #6 green),
removal of some unnecessary landscape beds by greens
and tees, and 81 stumps ground on the course and front
entrance. This was a task that should have been done
years ago and were a visual eyesore to golfers and my-
self. Please be patient as it will take a month or two for
these to be cleaned up and finished. More improvements
are in the near future.
Looking forward to a successful and fun golf season as
this will be my second year as your Superintendent! Re-
member to follow me on Twitter @ElksTurf51 for course
conditions and updates.
See you on the course,
Shawn DeWitt
