This cordless telephone uses a digital security code to preventunauthorized access to your base unit. This security code preventsother cordless handsets from making calls through your base unit.A random security code will be assigned automatically betweenyour base unit and handset when you charge the battery pack forthe first time.If you want to reset the security code, see page 34.

Choose the best locationBefore choosing a location for your new phone, read theINSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS included in the PRECAUTIONSAND IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS brochure. Here are someimportant guidelines you should consider:

• You should charge your handset for 15-20 hours before using the phone.

• The location should be close to both a phone jack and continuousa power outlet which is not switchable.

• Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noisesuch as motors and fluorescent lighting.

• Be sure there is sufficient space to raise the base antenna fully vertical.

• The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop or mounted on astandard wall plate.

Avoid heat sources, such as radiators, air ducts, and sunlight

Avoid television sets and other electronicequipment

Avoid noise sources such as a windowby a street with heavy traffic

Avoid microwave ovens

Avoid excessive moisture, extremely lowtemperatures, dust,mechanical vibration, orshock

Route the cord.

Place the power cord so itdoes not create a triphazard, or where it couldbecome chafed and createa fire or electrical hazard.

1 Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and toa telephone outlet.

2 Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jack and to a standard 120VAC wall outlet.

3 Set the base unit on a desk or tabletop and place the handset on the base unit.Then raise the antenna to a vertical position.

Use only the supplied AD-420 ACadapter. Do not use any other ACadapter.

Connect the AC adapter to acontinuous power supply.

Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug theAC adapter easily.

If your telephone outlet isn't modular,contact your telephone company forassistance.

Standard wall plate mountingThis phone can be mounted on any standard telephone wallplate.

1 Snap the wall mountadapter into thenotches on the base.

2 Plug the telephoneline cord to the TEL LINE jack and theAC adapter to the DC IN 9V jack.

3 Plug the telephoneline cord into thetelephone outlet.

4 Wrap the AC adaptercord inside themolded wiringchannel. Then wrapthe cord around thestrain relief notch.

5 Plug the AC adapterinto a standard120VAC wall outlet.

6 Raise the antenna to avertical position.

7 Align the mountingslots on the base. withthe mounting posts onthe wall. Push in anddown until the phoneis firmly seated.

Direct wall plate mounting

If you don't have a standard wall plate, you can mount your phonedirectly to the wall. Before doing this, consider the following:• Avoid electrical cables, pipes, or other items behind the mounting

location, that could cause a hazard when inserting screws into the wall.

• Try to mount your phone within 10 - 15 feet of a working phonejack to avoid excessive cord lengths.

• Make sure the wall material is capable of supporting the weight ofthe base and handset.

1 Insert two mounting screwsinto the wall, (with theirappropriate anchoring device),3-15/16 inches apart. Allowabout 3/16 of an inch betweenthe wall and screwheads formounting the phone.

2 Refer to steps 1 through 8 onpage 8 to mount the telephone.

8 On the base unit, pull thehandset retainer out of the slot.Rotate it clockwise 180 degrees.

Charge the battery pack for more than 12-15 hours before you startusing your phone.

1 Remove the battery cover.

2 Connect the battery packconnector with the correctpolarity (black and red wires),then insert the battery packinto the battery compartment.

3 Slide the battery cover forwarduntil it snaps into place.

4 Place the handset on the base.Make sure that the “status”LED of the base unit lights, andcharging begins. Charge thebattery for at least 12-15 hours.You can place either side upfor charging the battery.

Battery use time (per charge)From fully charged• Seven hours coutinuous use.• Seven days when the handset is in the standby mode.

When the battery charge becomes lowWhen the voltage of battery pack in the handset is very low andneeds to be charged, the phone is programmed to eliminatefunctions in order to save power. If the battery charge becomes lowBattery LED blinks. If the phone is in use, the handset beeps.Complete your conversation as quickly as possible and return thehandset to the base unit for charging.

Cleaning the battery contactsTo maintain a good charge, it is important to clean the battery contacts on the handset and base unit about once a month. Use apencil eraser or other contact cleaner.Do not use any liquids or solvents.

Even when the batterypack is not being used, itwill gradually discharge over a longperiod. For optimum performance, be sure toreturn the handset to thebase unit after a telephone call forcharging the battery.

Rechargeable batterieshave a memory effect thatreduces standby and talktime. To avoid thismemory effect, on amonthly basis, use thephone until the Batterylamp blinks. Then chargethe battery for 15 hours.

Handset ringer toneIn the standby mode, press . Each time is pressed, the ringer tone setting changes and the selected ringer tone sounds for 2 seconds.

Handset ringer switchThis switch turns the handset ringer on or off.

Handset ear speaker volumeThe phone has four ear speaker volume levels, Normal, Medium,High, and Loud. Pressing or during a telephone call willchange the ear speaker volume of the handset. This setting willremain in effect after the telephone call has ended.

The EXA8955 has a built-in answering system that answers andrecords incoming calls. You can also use your answering system to record a conversation,leave a voice memo message for others who use the phone, or toannounce a special message to callers when you're away from yourphone.

Setting ring time switchThe ring time /toll saver switch allows you to set the number of rings the caller hears before the answering system plays your outgoing message. You can set the switch to answer after two rings or after four rings. In the TS (Toll Saver) position, the answering system picks up aftertwo rings if you have new messages, and after four rings if there arenone. This way, if you call long distance to check your messages,you can hang up after third ring to avoid billing charges.

Playing your messageThe base LED shows the number of total messages on thedisplay. If the display is blinking, then there are new messageswaiting for you. The EXA 8955 is designed to play your newmessages first. After you play your new messages you can thenplay your old messages.

Using your answering system

1 Press . The system announcesthe number of new and oldmessages, then the incomingmessages are played. The time andday each message was received isannounced after the message isplayed, and the message counterLED displays the number of thecurrent message.

2 When all new messages haveplayed, a long tone is heard. Themessage counter LED stops flashingto indicate that all of the newmessages have been reviewed.

3 After you have reviewed all yourmessages, you can play your oldmessages again. Press andfollow the instructions above.

Deleting a messageDeleting individual message

1 Press to review your message.

2 If you decide to delete a message,press anytime during themessage. The system beeps andimmediately goes to the nextmessage.

3 After you have played all of yourmessages, a long tone sounds on thebase speaker.

1 During the conversation from thehandset. Press and holdon the base. The unit begins recordingand the LED blinks. A beep that can beheard by both parties sounds every 15seconds.

Remote access away from homeYou can operate your answering system from a remote locationusing any touch-tone telephone. Use this function to check forrecorded messages, to play or delete messages, even to record anew outgoing message, and to monitor sounds in the room.

1 Call your telephone number.

2 During the answering machine is activated, press # and yourPIN code.

3 The answering system announces the time and day stampand the number of messages stored in memory. Then themessage playback automatically begins.

4 You may continue to listen to your massage, or you mayselect a command from the following chart.

Remote room monitorYou can call your answering system from any touch-tone phone andmonitor sounds in the room where your base is installed.

1 Call your telephone number.

2 While the answering machine is activated, press # and your PINcode.

3 The answering system begins announcing the time and day.

4 Press # then 5 to stop the messages.

5 Press # then . You hear sounds in the room where yourphone is installed. After 15 seconds, the answering systemreturns to the command waiting mode.

6 Press # then to monitor the room for another 15 seconds. Orselect another remote function. Or hang up to exit the system.The answering system automatically returns to standby.

The digital security code is an identification code used to connectthe handset and the base unit. Normally, setting the code is notnecessary.The first time you charge your handset, the security code isautomatically set. (See page 3.)

In the rare situation that you suspect another cordless telephoneis using the same security code, you can change the code.

1 Remove the handset from the baseunit. Press .

2 While the handset is producing thepaging sound, hold while placing the handset in the baseunit. The paging tone stops.Leave the handset on the baselonger than 3 seconds. A newrandom security code is set.

To attach the beltclip

Insert the beltclip into the holeson each side of the handset.Press down until it clicks.

To remove the beltclip

Pull both sides of the beltclip torelease the tabs from the holes.

Your phone may be used with an optional headset. To use this feature, simply plug any standard 2.5mm headset plug into the headset jack. Your phone is ready for hands-freeconversation.

If your phone is not performing to your expectations, please trythese simple steps first.

Symptom

The status light won'tcome on when thehandset is placed inthe base unit.

The audio soundsweak and/or scratchy.

Can't make or receivecalls.

The handset doesn'tring or receive a page.

Suggestion

• Make sure the AC adapter is pluggedinto the base unit and wall outlet.

• Make sure the handset is properlyseated in the base unit.

• Make sure the charging contacts on thehandset and base unit are clean.

• Make sure that the base unit antenna isin a vertical position.

• Move the handset and or base unit to adifferent location away from metalobjects or appliances and try again.

• Press to help eliminatebackground noise.

• Make sure that you are not too far fromthe base.

• Check both ends of the base unittelephone line cord.

• Make sure the AC adapter is pluggedinto the base unit and wall outlet.

• Disconnect the AC adapter for a fewminutes, then reconnect it.

• Reset the digital security code (See page 34).

• Make sure is pressed.

• The battery pack may be weak. Chargethe battery on the base unit for 12-15hours.

• The handset may be too far away fromthe base unit.

• Place the base unit away fromappliances or metal objects.

• Reset the digital security code (See page 34).

• Make sure that the touch-tone phoneyou're using can transmit the tonefor at least two seconds. If itcannnot, you may have to useanother phone to access yourmessage.
