LIBRIS 20 07 SPRING Ex Published by the Alameda County Library Foundation Message from the Director First Lady Laura Bush honored the Alameda County Library Write to Read youth literacy program at Juvenile Hall at a ceremony for the 2006 Coming Up Taller Awards in Washington, D.C., Monday, January 22nd. Joined by 15 other programs and their representatives, Alameda County Librarian Jean Hofacket and one-time Juvenile Hall resident Hannah Kefela stood beside the First Lady in the East Wing of the White House to receive their plaque. Ms. Hofacket described the ceremony. Jean Hofacket, Hannah Kefela, Laura Bush. Joining the Alameda County Library Foundation was an easy transition for me, since I grew up in one of those homes with books in every room. And I continue to live in one now. And when I started this position in October, I was no stranger to the concept of books, and library programs. I also possessed the necessary professional skills for the position, however, I found myself a stranger to the communities of Alameda County. In my quest to meet these communities, I started making daily telephone calls to you and found two recurring themes. The first is your stories, our friends, our customers, our donors, and our sponsors. I heard stories of your connection to the library, what the library meant to you as a child, to you as a parent, as an adult. Stories of how the library allowed your dreams to come true, stories of how the library changed your life. And so many of your stories lead me to the next theme. Many of “This was an amazing experience. It was a clear demonstration of democracy in action. It was inspiring to see the good work that can be done by people of good will, imagination and commitment.” The Write to Read program has introduced the joy of reading to more than 4,000 incarcerated youth. Founded in 1999, Write to Read motivates and inspires young people housed in the Alameda County Juvenile Hall to strengthen their reading skills and make meaningful connections to authors and books that can positively influence the choices they make in their own lives.
