    Equipment Group Classification

Equipment Group Application Area of the Devices

    I

Equipment intended for use in underground parts of mines, and to thoseparts of the surface installations of such mines, liable to be endangered byfiredamp and/or combustible dust

IIEquipment intended for use in other places liable to be endangered byexplosive atmospheres (eg. Refineries, industrial plants, silos,)

Equipment group I is subdivided into the following two categories:

    Category M1 M2

    OperatingConditions

Equipment has to remain function-al, even in the event of an explosiveatmosphere present.

Equipment is intended to be de-en-ergized in the event of an explosiveatmosphere.

    Requirements for Protec-tion Measures

In the event of failure of one meansof protection, at least an indepen-dent second means provides the re-quisite level of protection, or the re-quisite level of protection is assured

in the event of two faults occurringindependently of each other.

The equipment in this categorymust provide the requisite level ofprotection during normal operationeven under more severe operatingconditions, such as those arisingfrom rough handling and changing

    environmental conditions.

In the European Economic Area the equipment group II is currently subdivided into 3 catego-ries or 6 zones (IEC 60079-0:2007 will cause a few changes here):

Type of Atmosphere Zone Category Equipment Labeling

    Gas (G)

    Zone 0 1 G II 1 G

    EX Approvals

Europe (ATEX)The ATEX Directive 94/9/EC came into force on 1 July 2003, superseding national legislation in the memberstates of the European Union. The Directive regulates the bringing to market and commissioning of ATEXproducts. It must be emphasized that Directive 94/9/EC contains requirements for all parties releasing

products on the market and/or operating them, whether this may be the manufacturer, their agent, theimporter or any other person responsible for this. However, the directive does not govern the use of equip-ment within potentially explosive areas, such as for example equipment covered by Directives 1999/92/EC,92/91/EC and 92/104/EC.

Australia, New Zeeland (IECEx)The driving force for IECEx approvals comes from manufacturers and users of Ex products. By providingan international certification scheme, the IECExsimplifies the international sale for manufacturers of equip-ment intendedfor use in explosive atmospheres.

USA (UL CSA)Explosion-proof electrical equipment must also be tested in the USA prior to operation in potentially ex-plosive areas. Approved testing organisations (NRTLs - Nationally Recognised Testing Laboratories), suchas e.g. FM, UL, CSA, amongst others, test the equipment for compliance with the appropriate regulationsand standards and compile an Approval Report for operation in Hazardous Locations. In addition, FMhas been issuing a Certificate of Compliance in recent years. This is an excerpt from the Approval Reportand only contains data and information important for the operator.

Canada (CSA UL)In Canada, the circumstances are comparable to those in the USA. The CEC (Canadian Electrical Code)applies here and testing is carried out according to CSA standards. Approved testing laboratories are CSA,UL, FM and some others. As in the USA, approval for the operation of equipment within potentially explo-sive areas is also required in Canada for hazardous locations. In addition, the usual Safety Approval (CSAApproval), certifying compliance to the electrical safety standards also applies here.

Russian Federation (GOST)In 2001, Russia introduced a new set of standards, which govern the following points:The requirements forthe construction of explosion-proof electrical equipment. The classification of potentially explosive areas. The use of explosion-protected electrical equipment with different levels of protection within potentially

explosive areas. The introduction of the new standards served mainly for the purpose of harmonisation withthe standards outlined in the IEC 60079 set of norms.

In 2001, Russia introduced a new set of standards, which govern the following points: The requirements forthe construction of explosion-proof electrical equipment; the classification of potentially explosive areas;the use of explosion-protected electrical equipment with different levels of protection within potentially ex-
