Last month, we awarded $15,000 in scholarship awards to Adult Students in Scholastic Transition. It was an emotional and exciting evening as we heard the stories of seven amazing women and their quest to attain their educational goals. Thank you to Wanda Sanchez (SageView Advisory Group), ASIST Chairperson, and her committee for putting on an outstanding awards program. We had over 80 members and guests in attendance and the energy in the room was electric! Mahalo to member firm, Hawaii Convention Center, for the outstanding dinner and service. Every month, I remind all of you of a very important EWI member benefit – the free monthly corporate webinar. This month the corporate webinar will focus on negotiation. Log on to the webinar – Tuesday, August 4th at 9:00 a.m. HST to hear “Think Like a Negotiator – The 5 Biggest Mistakes and Their Solutions.” Whether you are in a sales position and negotiating every day at work or using the tips to improve negotiating with your significant other or children, you are sure to learn and grow during this hour long webinar. Did you know that in June there were 71 people on the corporate webinar and EWI of Honolulu tied with EWI of Richmond for the most members on the conference call? Congratulations to all of you for stepping forward and taking advantage of this great member benefit. Let’s keep it up Honolulu! Keep enhancing your personal development! And, if this time is not convenient for you, you can always log on to the corporate website to hear the webinar in its entirety at your leisure. Your membership in EWI is supported by your member firm. Please utilize EWI to promote your firm through announcements at dinner meetings, information in our monthly Connect newsletter, or even offering to host a firm night. So, your next Connect Challenge will be to do exactly this – promote your member firm! Find something that you’d like to announce to membership about your firm to help us learn more about your company or any promotions or specials to help your business grow. Our dinner meeting this month will not be the typical dinner meeting. It’s a firm night. We’ll be visiting member firm, Ito Healthcare Group’s Malama Day Care for our monthly dinner meeting, Wednesday, August 12th. (Please review the program flyer enclosed. Registration will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Malama Day Care. Limited parking is available at the facility. Additional parking is available at Olivet Baptist Church, across the street. Please consider carpooling to this event.) We will tour the adult day care facility and also hear from Ito Healthcare Group’s Director of Operations, Randall Ito and Malama Adult Day Care Program Director, Kate Kosianowski. This will be an educational evening as we all learn about the intricacies of caring for our elders. We realize that life is a full circle as we prepare to take care of our parents as they age and also think about our own needs. There is so much to know with constant changes to healthcare laws, Medicare, adult day care, home health care, long term care insurance, and more. Join us for Ito Healthcare’s firm night! Letter from the PresidentAloha EWI of Honolulu! 2015 is just marching along….moving forward now to April! We still have a lot in store for the rest of the year and look forward to your enthusiasm and participation.

Get excited and mark your calendars! • April 8, 2015 – Meet guest speaker, Vanna Novak of Speak to Persuade at our April dinner meeting

at member firm, Plaza Club. Thank you to Past President Gwen Fujie for her help in securing Vanna to speak to us.

• April 11, 2015 – Bingo at Pearl City Nursing Home! Reach out to Philanthropy Director, Wendy Kia (Marie Louise Fine Garment Cleaners) and volunteer! This is always a fun event! Prizes for the seniors are needed. Please bring these to the April 8th membership meeting.

• May 13, 2015 – We are giving out $15,000 in EWISP Scholarship Awards! Meet these outstanding high school seniors and their families! Support Jennifer Ihara (Level 3 Communications) and her committee.

• June 10, 2015 – EWI Executives Night – Invite your executive and be present for our first annual membership awards. An outstanding member firm and member representative will be honored. A special menu is being prepared by member firm, Plaza Club for this event.

• July 15, 2015 – ALERT! New Date! This will be the date of our ASIST Dinner meeting. (3rd Wednesday of July) Meet the adult students and their families as we all celebrate at member firm, Hawaii Convention Center, for dinner and awards. Another $15,000 in scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. Support Wanda Sanchez (Bank of Hawaii) and her committee at this scholarship dinner.

Attending our monthly meetings or philanthropic events is definitely one way to network with your fellow members. Remember that EWI is built on the 3Cs – Connections, Careers, and Community. Monthly meetings are a way to connect and also enhance your own personal development. In February, Craig Chong of Fresh Leadership focused on executive coaching and how we all can benefit by coaching others or being coached. In March, Jan Kaeo of Dale Carnegie Training spoke to us on the attitudes for service. She reminded us of the important principles of attitude control. Some of my favorite principles: “Don’t fuss about trifles. Create happiness for others. Expect ingratitude.” We were also so happy to have Past President Eleanor Urakawa in attendance. Eleanor and Jan previously worked at the same company and that’s actually how Jan learned of EWI of Honolulu about 20 years ago. If you have not attended a dinner meeting in a while, you could be missing out on a great opportunity to connect and enhance your career! Back in February, I encouraged all of you to reach out to another EWI member for a one-on-one. Did you have a chance to complete a one-on-one? Karen Garcia (Hawaiian Electric) and Nadine Uratsuka (Accuity) were the first to respond. They chatted over coffee and discussed the upcoming golf tournament and caring for their families and their aging parents. Please continue to have these one-on-one discussions. You’ll be surprised by what you learn.

Your next Connect Challenge will be to focus on the second of the 3 Cs – Careers. Did you know that one of your membership benefits in EWI is a monthly corporate webinar? Attend the April webinar (Tuesday, April 7th, 9:00 a.m. HST – Servant Leadership: A Business Management Strategy) and email me your takeaways from the webinar. Log onto the corporate website (www.ewiconnect.com) to register. (Refer to the webinar flyer in the Connect.) These webinars are free of charge to you and anyone within your member firm. Take advantage of it!

Where does your money go? Your participation in the golf tournament, our major fund-raising event, will support EWI’s mission of community involvement and allow us to continue to provide generous scholarships to individuals pursuing a higher education degree and to support other philanthropic activities related to literacy. A small portion of the proceeds will also support some of our operational expenses.

EWISP (Executive Women International Scholarship Program) provides scholarship funds to outstanding high school seniors for their pursuit of a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary education institution. Students are judged on their oral and written communication skills, creativity, scholastic records, financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and honors, citizenship, attitude, and clearly defined career goals. In 2014, EWI of Honolulu awarded $8,000 in scholarships.

ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) Scholarship Program provides financial support to adults facing economic, social, or physical challenges, who are looking to improve their situation through educational opportunities (non-traditional students). The goal of the scholarship is to enable recipients to improve their self-esteem and to have a positive impact on their personal life, employment, and community through the furtherance of their education. In 2014, EWI of Honolulu awarded $7,500 in scholarships.

Who is EWI? Executive Women International is a professional organization that brings together key individuals from diverse businesses for the purposes of promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement. EWI is unique in that the firm, not the individual, holds the membership.

Since its establishment in 1938 in San Francisco, California, the organization has grown, and today, EWI has more than 2,000 member firms and 2,300 representatives in chapters in major cities across the U.S. and Canada. EWI of Honolulu was established in 1967 and currently has 53 member firms and 57 representatives.

Thank you for your support and for participating in our 20th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament.

See you there!

Individuals and Businesses Thrive Through

Watch Connections, Career, and Community videos at ewiconnect.com/thrive.

The EWI experience is based around our three core values: connections, careers, and community. The value of each to everyone in the EWI network is as diverse as our members themselves. Regardless of personal or professional goals, EWI offers a full spectrum of opportunities to build stronger skills, relationships, communities, and businesses.

Connections Careers and Community

• Plug into a network of fellow business professionals, locally and internationally, to build your contact list.

• Discover opportunities within a diverse mix of member firms.

• Showcase your firm’s products and services—more often than not, fellow representatives turn to their EWI network first.

• Connect with like-minded people in similar positions with similar experiences.

• Find or be a mentor.

• Exchange ideas and gain new perspectives outside of your business focus.

• Gain recognition as a business leader through various EWI Corporate projects.

EWI builds stronger communities through:• Reading Rallies.

RESULTS

RelationshipsEWI is an organization that believes in long-term, highly valuable relationships. EWI does not work as a “quick-hit” lead generator. Rather, member representatives build lasting, sustainable, and ultimately valuable business connections through trust and respect. The relationships your employees form create associations between your organization and a diversity of other prestigious firms and executives in your city.

EducationEWI offers hundreds of professional development webinars and other resources each year on topics relevant to a member representative’s business and personal growth. Your investment provides affordable access to professionally produced training that would be difficult for many businesses to provide to their employees. To further your investment, member representatives are encouraged and expected to share their learning with other employees.

SkillsEWI member representatives practice strong business ethics and build core skills such as public speaking, effective leadership, mentoring, strategic planning, and even how to effectively and efficiently run meetings with Robert’s Rules of Order.

Untapped PotentialParticipation in EWI quickly raises your firm’s visibility among your city’s business community. This affords you the ability to promote your products and services to audiences you may not reach otherwise, both locally and throughout EWI’s North American network. Your firm will also have the ability to build contacts by hosting Chapter Firm Nights or attending other Firm Nights and various business meetings throughout the year.

LeadershipMany EWI member representatives cite leadership opportunities as a driving motivator for their participation. EWI offers a number of ways to build real-world leadership skills through Chapter leadership, Corporate Board participation, our Academy of Leadership program and other initiatives. Additionally, your membership positions your firm and your member representatives as leaders within your business community.

Tangible ReturnsThe EWI network is incredibly loyal and motivated to see your member representatives and your firm succeed—more often than not, representatives look to one another first when they need a specific product or service. Your firm will be listed in the EWI International Directory, considered the “blue book” of industry professionals, which constitutes a network across the United States and Canada for the exchange of information and business matters.

SupportYour member representatives will have a support structure of like-minded individuals outside of the office for career advice and other needs. EWI membership also provides you with an opportunity to support and recognize a top-ranking person within your firm by appointing her/him to represent your organization. Lastly, EWI offers your firm a number of ways to support your local community through good works, scholarship programs, and other philanthropic initiatives.

August 2015

SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

Flooring: carpeting is preferable to area rugs because it reduces tripping hazards and can cushion falls. But if area rugs are used, make sure they’re secured to the floor.

Handrails: on stairways, add a second handrail along the opposite wall for improved stability.

Footwear: to prevent falls, non-slip shoes are preferable to slippers or socks.

Non-skid safety strips: adhered to the floor of a tub/shower, non-skid strips are preferable to removable in-shower bath mats.

Bathroom grab bars: ideally these should be anchored into the wall, but if that’s not possible opt for a safety rail clamped onto the side of the tub.

Quality step ladder: purchase a broad-based heavy-duty step ladder with a hand-hold bar across the top to safely reach items stored out of reach.

Lighting: whether it’s making a bathtub brighter or installing motion-activated night lights in the hallway, better lighting can help prevent falls and make hobbies, reading, etc. more enjoyable. Lighting improvements might be as simple as changing the bulbs (to higher wattages or to bulbs that mimic daylight instead of “yellow” soft lighting) or adding battery-operated units.

CONVENIENCE FACTORS

Hand shower: convert a standard fixed shower head into a hand-held system with a flexible hose.

Raised toilet seats: no need to buy a new toilet when a removable seat can be added to most standard toilets.

Mail catcher: mail delivered via a slot in the door may be easier to retrieve than from a mail box, especially if a narrow basket is mounted below the door opening so the recipient doesn’t have to pick mail off the floor.

Knobs: replace round door and/or faucet knobs with lever styles, which are easier to turn. Likewise, loop pulls can make drawers easier to open.

Eating: specially-designed cups and eating utensils can minimize food spills, including weighted options that help counterbalance shake-prone hands.

Cooking utensils: lightweight and ergonomically-designed options are readily available now, many offering non-slip handles and bright, attractive colors.

Keep things handy: move often-used items to easy-to-access locations.

Eliminate excess “stuff”: having fewer items to store, sort, juggle and handle can make aging in place an easier and more enjoyable proposition.

The Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®) designation is awarded by the SRES® Council, a subsidiary of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

To learn more about SRES® and access various consumer resources, please visit SRES.org.

Low-Cost Options for Aging in Place

You can count on an SRES® to guide you through

the process of buying or selling your home, making

the transaction less stressful and more successful.

Many seniors prefer to stay in their homes as long as possible. Of course, your ability to do this hinges on many factors, including the nature of the challenges you face in your current home. Major home renovations may be required, but there are also numerous inexpensive steps you can take to improve your living situation, including:
