DIRECTORS' REPORTFe/low Members,

It is with pleasure that we once 'again submit for your consideration and approval our Report for the Quarterended June 27th/ 1953.

1. Sales.—Once again thc saic's figure For the Quarter has been most satisfactory, the cash sales amounting tof910,261. 12S. 9d., 'bemg an inereaae Of EI00o893. IS. Qd;, Or 12 5 Per Cent OVer the CarreSPOnding PeriOd Of 1952.During the past three mort(ha it has. been a ditficult time throughout tbe country for tbe ihy goods trade. Fortunately, our total sales ia dry goods have shown an increase, although in one department we regret that there has been a slightdecrease in saks. We must again ask For your continued support in the Drapery, Outfitting, Tailoring and FootwearDepartments. It is your Directors' constant concern to sce that the goods which are being sold in the dry goods sectionare competitive m price, style and quality. We do sincerely ask that before you make your purchases in the dry goodssection, you come along to oiu' shops 'and comp((re, 'the price arid: ualijty before goihg elsewhere. We would like onceagain to record our appreciation of thb gplcndi'd work of aur sta in all departments.2. Membership. —The present membership is 41,004, being an increase of 319 for the Quarter.3. . ', ~(sJ.Spilsby. The Dry Goads Emporium at Spilsby is now nearing completion after extensive'comet))neidudng thc latter part of August and we do hope that afi aur members in the

n)jt(ligctthis ah~and we fec) confident that he will be successful in furthering Co-operation

" in thc Spfisby a(ca.(h) Tealby Street Pharmacy. During this Quarter we have completely modcrnised the Teafby Street Pharmacy and

we feel confident that thc members in tFiis area will appreciate the transformation that has taken place. The shop nowappears to be much larger and we feel the modern fixtures, fittings and the new shop front are a credit to the Society. We would ask our members in the area to come along and have a look at the shop and to give us their support by

purchasing their pharmaceutical requirements from their own Society.(e) Central Premises. We regret that once again our application for the licence for extensive alterations at the central

premises has been turned down by the Ministry of Works. We will try again in a further three months time, but the

members can rest assured that we are doing everything possible to obtain the necessary building permit.(r/) Doddmgton Road Estate. We hope that many of you will have visited the furnished show house at the

Doddmgian Road Estate. We have still a few houses for sale and we trust that any of our members who arc interested

will contact our Building Department where they will be given full details regarding same. Liberal mortgages can be

arranged with the Society and every help will be given to prospective purchasers.(e) Riseholme Estate. Work will be commencing on the emponum at the beginning of August. The necessary

building licence has been received but it was given on the understanding that work would not be commenced before

August 1st. We are hoping to get this new emporium finished as soon as possible so that we can give the necessary

service to our members who are, and wha will be, housed in the new estate.4, 'Transport Manager. —It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mr. Jones, the Transport Manager ofthe Society. Mr. Jones died suddenly on May 19th, 1953, and we extend to his widow our deepest sympathy. Mr. Jones

had given the Society thirty-three years excellent service and 'it will be difficult to find a man as conscientious and

capable, and one who will always work in the best interests of the Society and the Co-operative Movement.5. Members' Outing. —We feel that certain members who. took part in the outing to London on Saturday, June 6th,

1953, to view the Coronation decorations have unfairly criticised the Society for their arrangements. The Directors

have made a thorough investigation of this and they bnd no fault can be attached to the arrangements made by the

Society. We were nat responsible for the pohce parking arrangements which stated that our buses must be parked in acertain area, in this instance Regent's Park, nor were we responsible for thc large number of people, which made some

of our members late in arriving b'ack. at the buses. A's'tlie'Directors have sanct'ioned these outings to be run without

profit, we feel that the criticism was undeserved. Mr. McCaH, who is in charge oF the arrangements, carried out his

duties to the best of his ability but circumstances beyond anyone's control cannot bc accepted as a legitimate complaim

against the Society.

6. Television Display. —,On Coronation Day, the Society opened the New Hall and gave a free te)cvision show toold age pensioners. We have had, numerous letters of con)patugition on the arrangemcnts that were made in connectionwith this and we would like to record our thanks to the engineers who worked thraugh the night to get the sets tandy

in order that the old people could see the Queen crowned.

39,8652. Dry Gouda —Your Directors have given very serious consideration to our dry goods trade and while we are showingincreased sales, we are still far from satisfied with our percentage trade in dry goods from our membership. We have entered intoa bulk buying group consisting of some of the largest societies in the country —London, South Suburban, Portsea Island,Nottingham, Bristol, etc. It is your Directors' intention that in our dry goods departments we must be competitive in the priceand quality of our goods. Weekly checks are being made on our prices as compared with the multiples and you can rest assuredthat everything will be done to see that our members are given goods at competitive prices. We must ask for your support in theDrapery, Outfitting, Tailoring, Footwear and, in fact, afi dry goods departments, as we have little doubt that our prices are nowgetting into line and there will be goods on sale which will be suitable to afi pockets. The Co-operative Movement's trade indry goods throughout the whole country is far from satisfactory. At this present moment a Committee of Enquiry has been setup to examine the financial and trading policy of the C.W.S. It is hoped that as a result of these enquiries we may be able topurchase more of our requirements from the C.W.S. at competitive prices. Your Directors are determined that Lincoln Societywill progress as far as dry goods sales are concerned. They are doing everything possible to get our goods into line with regardto price and quality and it is now the members' turn to give us their full support.3. Development. —(0) Spilsby. A new dry goods store, formerly belonging to C. J. Fox and Company, was opened on Friday,25th September, 1953, and we are pleased to report that the sales for the first two weeks have been very satisfactory.

(b) Lamb Gardens. A new drug store has been opened at Lamb Gardens and we are confident that this will be of considerablehelp to our members in the St. Giles area.(c) Riseholme Estate. Work has commenced on our new food hall and shops on the Riseholme Estate, and we are hopingthat this will be completed and ready for opening in about nine months' time. Every etfort is being made to get these shops openedas soon as possible so that we can give an adequate service to our members who have taken up residence on the Riseholme Estate.

(d) Branston Butchery; We are pleased to report that we have been successful at long last in getting a butchery business atBranston. This shop was opened on 14th September, 1953, and the sales have been exceptional. There is little doubt that it willbecome one of our hrgest butchery shops.

4. Conducted Holidays, 1954.—While we realise the 1953 holiday season has only just finished, we thought it advisable to givesome preliminary details of the venues of the 1954 conducted holiday tours. There will be a conducted tour of Looe andCornwafi, Eastbourne and the South Coast, Morecambe and the Lake District, and a continental holiday. Wifi anyone interestedkindly get in touch with the General OIBce where a holiday club card can be obtained and payments accepted weekly. By thisearly announcement it is hoped that it wiB give our members an opportunity of starting early to save for their 1954 holiday.5. Central Premises. —It is with regret that we have to announce that we have still not been successful in obtaining a Bcenceor the development of.om central pmmises. A further apphcation has been turned down by the Ministry of Works but they

ve stated that we should again apply in January. We are hoping that licencm wiB boxnne easier after Christmas but we woulde to assure our membeta that everythmg is being done to obtain a building licence so that we can get ahead with tlie hiationu

r'enovations to om central presusm.6, Dividend Policy.—A statement has been issued by the Co43perative Union giving advice to societies on the question of

dividend. They atu advising societies to mcrease the aBocations made to Reserve Funds and also to Incretue their depnseiatiCmaBocations. Your Directors have pleasure ln announcing that the recmnmmtdations which have been made by the CI543perative

- Union have been 'canied:out by this Society dming the past six years, and the fmancial stability of, the Society has never beenr than it is ht the present time. Your Directors ane happy in the fact that they have been able to pay a rate of dividend

B in excess etf the nat(emaI avmage and, at the same time, have been able to build up their Reserve Funds and also substantially,.depreciate their buildings, fixtnres and fittmgs.

Xoms faithfully, for and on behalf of the Directors,~rg~-';;:::. .. : . CONSTANCE I. BROOKE, President.

Fellow Members,It is with pleasure that we once again present for your consideration and approval the Directors' Report for the Half Year

ended 26th September, 1953.1. Sales.—The Cash Sales for the Half Year amounted to Z1,876,268, being an increase of 6189,580 or 11 25 per cent over

the corresponding period of 1952. You will be pleased to note that the annual sales amounted to 63,748,535, which is onlyK1,465 short of the f3h millions. As you will be aware, there was a recent wage increase granted td aB employees and to keep ourwages costs at the same rate as previously, it is essential to have a 7i per cent sales increase. As other expenses keep rising, these

es increases are essential if we are going to maintain the present rate of dividend. We are more than delighted that we have~n able once again to recommend for your approval a Is. 4d. dividend which is well in excess of the national average, and we

. would like to record our appmciation to the members for their continued support and also to the stafF for the excellent work whichthey have carried out during the past six months. The continued progress of the Society can be seen by the following statistics:—

The first contest cannotbe organised until 1954and it has bee'n decfded to move the date of the Fifth Annual'Gm1ds' Drama Festival to either February orMarch, 1955, as it has been suggested more than once that October does not afiow the gufid members sutficient time to rehearsetheir plays on account of holidays intervening. The Junior Festival will be held towards the end of October, 1954, and we hopeg receive the support of all our members' children or grandctuldren.CILLOR L R. FORD.

DIRECTORS' REPORT

Fellow-klembers,

The Directors have pleasure once again in submitting for your approval and adoption the Report for the Quarter ended26th December, 1953.

1. Sales.—The cash sales for the Quarter amounted to $973,483. 9s. 3d., being an increase of $61,041. 2s. ld. or 6.7 per cent'over the corresponding period of 1952. We would like to point out to the members that in order to keep our expenses rate at thesame level as last year, it is essential that we have a sales increase of 7$ per cent. We are confident that with the help of theemployees and members we will be able to show this rate of increase before the end of the Half Year. We would once again askfor your continued support in the various departments of the Society where we are sure you will find the goods equal to, if notbetter than, those of our competitors in price, quality, and design. We would like to record our appreciation to the staif for thea'work during the past 13 weeks.

2. Membership. —The present membership is 41,724, being an increase of 240

3. Development: (a) North Hykeham. —We have pleasure in reporting that we have purchased a site at North Hykeham whichwe hope to develop in the near future. The members in this village have repeatedly asked the Society to build a Butchery andChennst's Shop in this area, and it is your Directors' intention to build a Grocery, Butchery, and Chemist's Shop on the site whichwe have acquired. The positioning of shops is, in our opinion, most important and the new shops will be built at tha-'4msa-ioads, Lincoln Road, North Hykeham.

I

(b) Daddiagtan Road Estate.—The temporary shop at the Doddington Road Estate has now been opened, and the sales aresatisfactory. This shop will. eventually become one of the biggest in the Society, but it is the Board's intention to have a propersuite of shops built as and when the Doddington Road Estate becomes fully developed. A site has been laid aside for this purpose, and again great care has been taken in the planning and positioning of the permanent shops which will be built on this estate.

(c) Central Premises. —We are pleased to report that we have been successful in obtaining the licence for alterations to thecentral premises. As explained in previous reports and by the President of the Society at members' meetings, the development|and alterations will be carried out in three phases. The licence we have obtained is for phase 1 which includes the Society's premiseain Bank street, namely the Laboratory, chemist' s, and Toilet shop; and in silver street, the Electrical Shop and the old omceaknown as Palfrey Chambers. A passenger lift and goods hoist are part of this programme, and the three floors —that is the groundfirst, and second Boors—will be opened up as selling space. Work will be commenced on or before 1st March, 1954. The memberswill be kept fully informed in later reports of the progress of this most important development.

(d) Riseholme Estate.—Progress is being made with the suite of shops which the Society are building on the Riseholme Estate,It is too early yet to give a definite date when the work will be completed, but everything is being done to get these shops openedas expeditiously as possible.

4. Conducted Holidays. —Full details of the Society's conducted holiday arrangements for 1954 are now available. Thefollowing venues have been chosen: Morecambe and the Lake District, Eastbourne, Coach Tour to Looe, Cornwall, andSwitzerland. We would advise any members interested to book immediately in order to avoid disappointment. Weekly contri-butions can be paid into a Holiday Fund at your branch, and we can assure anyone who may be contemplating boohng theirholiday through the Society for the first time of excellent hotel accommodation and a first-rate holiday. Bills giving details are ondisplay in the various branches, and Mr. McCall in the General Office will be only too pleased to give his personal help to anyonewho may be contemplating either a foreign or English holiday this summer.

5. Death Benefit Scheme.—We would like to draw the members' attention to the free 'nsurance which is given to all membersof the Society. During the past three months we have paid 170 claims amounting to Kl,532, the Society carrying out funerals in120 of these cases. It should be noted that where the Society's funeral service is engaged, the amount of death benefit payable isdouble what it is otherwise.

i

I6.~Manager. —Your Directors have appointed Mr. S. E. Butler to the position of Transport Manager, the vacancy

having been created by the unfortunate death of Mr. E.A. Jones. Mr. Butler was formerly the Foreman Mechanic, and is a yotntgman 28 years of age. We have no doubt that he has an exceffent future to look forward to in the ~perafive Movement, and, wgwish him every success in his appointment.

7. Coal—Your Directors have pleasure in reporting that on Cbristmm Day last year every order of coal placed in the Socieighad been delivered. At the present moment we are completely up-to-date so far as delivery is concerned, and we wouM ask ottfmembers to place their ord'ers for coal immediately. As there will no doubt be some bad weather to fofiow, it is advisabk that afimembers get their coal cellars full to capacity. Your Directors wish to thank and compliment the Manager and staif in the CoalDepartment, and we hope that anyone who is not registered with the Society will consider changing over to us at Iha.sgstt ga-.„,retpstration which is some time in March.

Yours' fa'thfully,

For and on behalf of the ~CONSTANCE I. BRtWKF„' Itic'stkiiL'
