Welcome volunteers!

It can be big, it can be small. It may be colorful - after all. It may happen in winter, and sometimes in spring and summer. It can be done single-handedly or together. You may have to wait for it several months. But it brings you a lot of experience. Some say that it even smells funny, but all together it is European Voluntary Service!

We (previous volunteers) enjoyed our voluntary time here in Austria, and we would like to give you some helpful tips about voluntary work in Salzburg, and that is why we created this EVS guide especially for you ;)

We hope that you will enjoy EVS as much as we did!

Coordinating Organisation (CO)akzente Salzburg International is your Coordinating Organisation. They are in charge of several organizational things. Amoung these are:

• Transfer of pocket money to your account

• EVS meetings and free time activities – see more on the next pages

• Introduction to organizational things such as registration and opening of a bank account

• A number of administrative issues partially together with your Host Organisation and you: Writing and handing in the project application and the final report, Coordination of the EVS grant, Communication with your Sending Organisation, supporting your Youth Pass process, Link to the Austrian National Agency in particular concerning your EVS Trainings, etc.

EVS Meetings with akzenteOnce a month there will be an EVS meeting at akzente where vo-lunteers will have a small breakfast or snack together and talk about experiences in projects and Salzburg in general. Every volunteer may create a presentation about his/her country and present it to the other volunteers.Meetings will also be held for handling administrative issues and they are obligatory. But feel very welcome to bring your ideas in. The meeting usually takes place once a month from 10 – 12 o’clock.

Free time activities in akzente.Once a month volunteers have the possibility to join a free time activity especially for them! Young people from Salzburg will organise small trips or activities, so volunteers can get to know Salzburg better or just spend a wonderful time together with the other volunteers. Of course everyone will have the possibility to make activity sugges-tions or to plan activities on your own. The more creative your ideas are - the better!

Insurance

AXA Volunteers are all insured with the general EVS- insurance AXA. It covers every necessary treatment; no matter whether you visit a general or a private doctor. For any additional treatment ask your EVS coordinator first to make sure if the costs will be covered.Please always carry your insurance card with you.Your Coordinator will explain the whole process how to get medical treatment, and how to claim insurance money back from AXA, because AXA insurance works also 2 months after your voluntary service period, so you can also use it back home.

AXA do not cover the costs for: plastic surgery, unprescripted medi-cine, psychoanalysis, sun glasses, watertherapy, and other treatments or products that are not connected to primary health care.

Step by step.For example you have to visit a dentist:

• Make an appointment and visit your chosen dental facility (what kind of treatments are covered? Please read the AXA insurance guide for volunteers)

• After the appointment you have to pay for the treatment IF the bill is not more than € 50. After that bring the invoice to akzente, Silvia Leitner and/or Magdalena Portisch will help you to fulfill the AXA claim form and you will get the money back from insurance company within 3 weeks.

• If the bill is more that € 50 you have to ask for the invoice from the dental facility and bring it to akzente International. akzente will pay for bills over € 50.

Please keep in mind to hand in documents, invoices, receipts, and other documents to akzente within two weeks.

Rights and responsibilities

quote: „Volunteers receive no salary, not because their work would be worthless, but because their contribution is invaluable.“

Arrangements for Volunteers. A normal workweek is about 30 hours. Every volunteer has the right to get two consecutive days off a week, as well as two additional holi-days per month. In case the volunteer gets sick, he/she has to inform his/her project leader or mentor as soon as possible. Every volunteer has the right to attend a German language course. If the volunteer is native or a very advanced German speaker, he/she has the possibility to attend a different language course.The language course can vary though and will be organised by the CO or HO. An additional language course cannot be covered.

Info-KitsAs you might have heard from your Sending Organization there are documents called Info-Kits in which all the rights and responsabili-ties of a Hosting-, a Sending- and a Coordinating Organization are officially stated – and so are the duties and the rights of the volunteer.

Your mentor

It is important for every volunteer to have a mentor. The mentor helps to integrate in local society, gives a helpful hand in Youthpass writing and is there for you during your EVS. You can address your mentor with personal and project related issues.The mentor will be provided to every volunteer from his or her Host organisation.And we hope that each volunteer gets along with his mentor just fine, BUT! – If there are any problems or any misunderstanding between the volunteer and his/her mentor the volunteer can choose another mentor by talking to his Host organisation or coordination organisa-tion. The mentor should not be your direct boss in the organisation, he/she should be someone that is connected to the project, but takes no active part in it. (Nevertheless in most projects your mentor will probably be one of your colleagues!)

TrainingsVienna/InnsbruckThere are 2 trainings in Austria for each volunteer if your project duration is more that 6 months. (On arrival training) and (Mid term training).

Why are trainings so important? There are several reasons why each volunteer should attend trainings during his EVS project, especially the On arrival trainig and the Mid term training – because these trainings are the main guides and helpers during your project time.You can clear out any problem and misunderstanding that you might have in your project.

Meet other volunteers in Austria. This is a really important statement!

See other places in Austria.Compare your project to other volunteer projects and experiences, learn that all of the other volunteers face the same challenges and ups & downs as you do.

Learn about intercultural differences.Have a great time!

The On arrival training is taking part in Vienna, so that the volunteers from Salzburg have a great possibility to get to know the Austrian Capital city.The Mid term training is taking part in the wonderful city of Inns-bruck, a city that amazes anyone by its beauty and great nature.

As previous volunteers we truly recomend to you: do not miss any of the offered trainings. They are great!

Some tips for your EVS

During your EVS you might face home-sickness or cultural shock. We have therefore asked our last EVS generation for tips that might help you to cope with them.

Live now: Try to act from day to day. Do not think about things that might be tomorrow or that have been yesterday. Try to make the best of your actual situation! Enjoy the time with the people around you (even though you might not know them yet). Explore the place where you are living right now. That will surely make you feel more “at home”.

Search for challenges: Go to concerts, workshops, the theater or to other events to get an overview about the cultural scene and the people of a country. Dare to step in front of the door and don‘t stay too long alone in your room, even though that might seem easier in the beginning. Give yourself a push to learn new things and to collect experiences.

Homesickness: Starting something new might be hard in the beginning. Everything is new, you do not know the environment, your family and friends are far away and you have to manage a lot of things on your own now. Don‘t let that bring you down! You will find new friends, you will get to know your new “home” and you will get used to your new situation. Of course it is important to stay in con-tact with your family and friends, but sometimes it might be recom-mendable that you do not search for contact too often as this might make you wanna go back home to the people and places you know.

New language: Languages are connecting people. If you do your EVS in a country with a language you do not know yet, it is still important to search for contact with people. Many people in Europe speak English! You will also attend a language course that will help you to learn the new lan-guage. Dare to try what you have learned! Usually it is not necessary to speak a language at a high level to master most situations and to talk with people.

Cultural shock: As you are surely used to your home and to your usual environment, it might be a challenge to get used to a totally new environment during your EVS. That phenomenon is called “cultural shock” and nearly all people face it when they are moving to another country. To cope with cultural shock it is important to see everything relaxed. After some time you will get used to the new food, the people, the architecture or even the weather. On the other hand it might also happen that you face a cultural shock when you move to your home country again, because you became so used to your new environment during your EVS.

Free time: It is totally up to you how you would like to spend your free time and it is your decision what you would like to do. You could go to a sports club, attend a dancing course or some workshops, go to the cinema or to concerts. At all of these activities you can get to know people and maybe also new friends. If you would like to have more information what is going on in Salzburg you can as well contact the youth information center, they are happy to provide you tips. Address is Anton-Neumayr-Platz 3 in the city center of Salzburg.

Friends: Try to get in contact with people, speak with them, spend time with them. Try to have fun but do also dare to speak about your sorrows and fears. Friends are important in your daily life but especially when you are staying abroad. During an EVS it happens quite often that you find friends for a lifetime.

Private sphere: Some people like spending more time on their own, some less. Allow yourself to spend some time on your own if that feels good for you and respect the decision of other people to spend some time alone from time to time.

Routines: Either drinking a coffee every morning or going for a walk every evening. Try to find routines that will give your daily life some kind of normality or stability. Routines and doing things that you are used to do will give you a feeling of stability and might help you to feel more relaxed. You can also try to keep some old routines that might give you a feeling of being “at home”.

Do something good for you: Spoil yourself with little things, like buying or collecting flowers for yourself, borrow an interesting book, listen to music that inspires you, write a diary, make a beauty program or massage just for yourself. That‘s your date with yourself. To spoil yourself means filling your energy tank, find time to breathe and to relax, to reflect and gain new energy for your challenging daily life.

Be open for new things: New things can give us an uncomfortable feeling or even shock us. Try to leave prejudices or expectations behind you, then you will be open for new experiences without an inner blockade. Make yourself realize that you can learn something new in any situation.

Problems in the project …

Naturally during your EVS you might face some unexpected problems and unpleasant situations. EVS will change your everyday life and for some people that might be just too much. Also sometimes a volun-teer is not satisfied with his project, or some tasks in it, remember that the only way out of the problem – is talking about it!

In case of solving problems we came up with simple steps:

1. Face the cause of the problem. (Usually the problem might be sol-ved just by having a conversation with the person that is responsible for it.)

2. If that does not work out you could talk to your mentor. (Maybe the mentor has experienced similar problems and might have an idea on how to overcome it.)

3. If the problem is too huge for that – you could talk to your Host Organisating leader.

4. The next person to talk to would be your contact person from the Coordinating Organisation.

5. Also if the problem is not being solved by talking to all these peop-le, you might ask for assistance from your Sending Organisation.6. The last place to ask for help is the National Agency, but usually that is done only if the problem is so big that no one of the previous people could help.

Also – every volunteer has the right to end his project, but that me-ans that there is no more possibility to do EVS ever again.In case of terminating the project the volunteer must talk this over with his SO, CO, HO, and the NA.

By the way the Hosting organisation also has the right to end the project in case the volunteer does not fulfill the tasks and responsibi-lities stated in the contract.

Youthpass

Youthpass Certificate.All of the volunteers have a great opportunity to get a Youthpass certificate after their voluntary service.Those volunteers who under certain surcumstances may not finish their projects – will not have the opportunity to get a Youthpass.Usually volunteers start to write their Youthpass two months before the end of their voluntary service.Also we would suggest for every volunteer a small aspect that might help you in writing your Youthpass:During your service – write your diary or blog about every day events. It might come in handy when filling out the key competences.Maybe even take some pictures of some important achievements, that would make it easier to remember what kind of abilities you have gained.

What exactly is a Youthpass Certificate?

All participants who have participated in an approved project under the European Voluntary Service, have the right to receive recognition for their participation and acquired skills. The Youthpass Certificate is an instrument developed especially for this purpose. It’s a tool for participants of projects funded by the “Youth in Action Programme” to describe what they have done during the project and what they have learned, which can be very useful for the future. The Youthpass Certificate is part of the European Commission’s strategy to foster the recognition of non-formal learning as a tool to visualize and to validate learning outcomes gained during “Youth in Action” projects.

Getting around and travelling in Austria ...

All projects will provide the volunteers with the possibility to get from their accommodation to their project places with public trans-portation if the distance between those two is big. In that case some projects provide volunteers with monthly tickets wich are valid in: Citybus and S-bahn (within the City borders).And most of the projects will provide the volunteers with bycicles.Salzburg is a small city – and it is easy to reach all important places in the city center by foot.

Another tip about traveling:Every volunteer that is under age of 26, will receive VORTEILS card for free in case you buy it before one of the mentioned trainings.Vorteilscard gives 50 % reduced costs for train tickets in Austria.Volunteers will receive the Vorteilscards paid by the National agency.Train tickets in Austria are quite expensive, so with the Vorteilscard it

is half price off for traveling, witch is great for volunteers.We, as previous volunteers, were using this advantage, for example - to visit other volunteers in Austria wich we got to know during our Trainings.

S-Pass youth card:Together with Vorteilscard volunteer will get S-Pass youth card.S-pass youthcard also includes several reductions in Salzburg.For more information please visit S-Pass homepage: (www.s-pass.at)

Tips about shopping

During free time – volunteers are welcome to discover Salzburg and of course do some shopping. As previous volunteers we could suggest some smart possibilities to do shopping in and around Salzburg.

There are many places in Salzburg where to buy food, but the shops have different pricing. The cheapest shops are Hofer and Lidl. The most popular shop is Spar, but the prices in Spar are quite high.

Also, concerning the biggest shopping centers, we would suggest EUROPARK. The prices are average and the supply is simply huge.

But a smart thing to do is to go shopping in Germany! Not far from Salzburg – about 7 kilometers (direction München) is the town called Freilassing – on the main street you can find the shop Kaufland, that is even cheaper than Hofer in Salzburg. Very often volunteers are using this opportunity to hop on their bikes and go down to Kaufland.

Another Spar shop has recently opened in the train station and its greatest benefit is: it is open EVERY DAY from 08:00 - 23:00. Of course many of you might like to visit Turkish (which are also open during holidays), Chinese and Indian shops for some extraordi-nary food. Turkish shops you can find all around the train station on Elisabeth-straße and Rainerstraße (you can find more in google maps).An Indian shop is located near Elmokino on St.-Julian-Straße 5.Together with this EVS guide you will receive Salzburg ‚Extra ordina-ry’ map, where you will find different tips and shop locations about the city that might make your shopping easier.

Also – if you have to buy some extraordinary things, or you just want to check out some cheap and useful things you could visit a Flee mar-ket. It is located not very far from the city center. It opens up every Sunday early morning and is open till 12:00.Exact address is: Münchner Bundesstraße 116 , 5020 Salzburg.

Having fun in Salzburg

Salzburg is indeed is a wonderful city and its surroundings are also worth visiting. And we – previous volunteers – did! We were always looking for good but cheap ways to enjoy our free time through activities, parties, excursions and so on ...

And here is a little of something that we have „found“ during our voluntary time in Salzburg:

Salzach:Salzach is the river that flows through Salzburg.Along the river there are nice walking paths and bike ways. (Salzburg is really taking care of people that enjoy a healthy lifestyle and love riding their bikes!)Although it is not a fact, we’ve got the impression that there are more bikes on the road than cars in Salzburg. So the infrastructure for bike riding in the city is smart.In the evening the view along the Salzach is incredible, the mountain cliffs are illuminated and it is quite romantic. So we recommend you to enjoy the beauty of the river as much as you can.

Salzachsee: It is a wonderful place to chill in hot summer days for free. Only about 3 kilometers from the city center so it is easy to reach by bike.Salzachsee is a small lake area with a children’s playground, volleyball, basketball, football fields, possibility to play different kind’s of outdoor games, and so on!We enjoyed our time at Salzachsee and we hope that you will too!Also (small tip) - it is great place to celebrate birthdays … It is easy to reach Salzachsee by city bus number 7! Hop off at the bus stop called ‚Salzachsee’. (Pretty straightforward!)

Cycling paths:There is many, many cycling paths all around Salzburg and in the city.We recommend to explore Salzuburg and its surroundings by cycling.It is healthy and a great way for spending your free time.

Almkanal, Almwelle:Do you enjoy surfing? Surprisingly it is possible to go surfing in Salzburg! The Almwelle is located at the Heinrich-Meder-way in the city of Salzburg (Salzburg Süd/Gneis). Find more on google Google maps for better directions.Almkanal is one of the best places to go swimming. It is a small chan-nel that flows through Salzburg. And the direct best swimming place is: Sternhofweg. Take Bus 5 in the direction of Birkensiedlung and get off at Dossenweg.

Going out:You don’t know how to spend the evening? Here you can find lots of information about Salzburg’s nightlife with different events like concerts, filmnights, parties, festivals and so on. www.wearesalzburg.com

Are you interested in broadcasting? At Radiofabrik, the largest community radio in western Austria, you can attend different workshops, where you can learn how to create your own radio show:www.radiofabrik.at

Also there is possibility to play ice hockey, visit skate parks, do some mountain climbing and so on. You will find more info about different small activities from ‚Extra ordinary map’!

But still there is so much more to explore around SalzburgSo if you find some other great free time activities – enjoy and share the information with the rest of the volunteers!

Sport activities

We are sure that most of you volunteers would like to do some sports! And you are lucky that you are doing your EVS in Salzburg! Why? – Healthy lifestyle in Salzburg is one of the top priorities. You have the opportunity to do different sports activities for free or very cheap.

Decide fast, if you want to attend a course, most of the courses are in great demand. Registration starts in the middle of September and in the middle of February.

Places to visit in and around Salzburg

Places that are truly worth visiting in Salzburg!This tip comes in handy together with the city map witch is provided by the akzente Jugendinfo.

In this city guide you can find different spots in Salzburg city center that might be interesting for you.

But I could name the most extraordinary and interesting things that we have visited during our EVS.

FestungThere ist a beautiful castle (Festung) on top of the Mönchberg).The Festung is one of the most famous places in Salzburg, and it is well known even for those people that have never been in Salzburg because it is in the movie „Sound of Music“ and mostly on every postcard of Salzburg.At the castle garden you can enjoy the beautiful view of the old city of Salzburg and the view in the evenings is also wonderful.

Gaisberg (It is located outside of salzburg city but easily reachable by city bus, also a popular place to go hiking.)

Kapuzienerberg, (Mountain right beside akzente office building, also famous for great walking paths and mountain climbing possibilities.) Maybe you have heard something about the movie „Sound of Music“? If yes, then it might be interesting for you to look up different places in the city where the movie was filmed, for example Mirabellgarden

– famous for its beauty – one of the places in Salzburg that is most visited by tourists.

Red BullDid you know that Red Bull was invented in Salzburg? Red bull has made a huge progress in business and it is well known all over the world.In Salzburg you can visit the Red Bull stadion, Angar 7 near the air-port. (Adress : Salzburg airport, Wilhelm-Spazier-Straße. 7a) – where it is possible to learn more about Red Bull history, and view a won-derfull exhibition for free.

Ice CavesGoing from Salzburg to the South on the motorway will take you to the community of Werfen, easily spotted by its mighty Hohenwerfen Fortress. This building, however, is not the only top-attraction of this small mountain village: it is also the site of the largest ice cave in the world. Here you will find a unique opportunity to change your idea of what constitutes a cave completely: instead of a dark and dirty hole you will find gigantic ice-crystals and walls of ice. The entrance point is 20 metres wide and spreads out to a dome of 18 meters height.

Salt minesThe word Salzburg means „salt castle“ and refers to the importance that the „white gold“ had for the development of this city. Many visitors who come to Salzburg want to spend time not only in the city itself, but also in the surroundings - and going on a salt mine tour is among the best day-trips one can do. There are several salt mines available.

1.) Hallein and Dürrnberg Salt Mines: The first and by far most popular destination for a quick Salzburg salt mine tour that came into our mind was Hallein. The pretty town just south of Salz-burg can be accessed by public means of transport (trains and busses) and is home to „the“ salt mines of Salzburg. Today, salt is not being mined here anymore, but this is actually an advantage: This way, you can enjoy the place as a show-and-tell mine, alongside with multi-me-dia shows, a museum of Celtic culture and information on salt trade. Note also the pretty town centre of Hallein.

2.) Hallstatt: A bit further away from Salzburg, but extremely rewarding. Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. This would go beyond a simple salt mine tour, since Hallstatt lies in the centre of the picturesque Salzkammergut. There is also a pretty town, a lake, hills and the show mines to see. Note that if you want to do Hallstatt by public transport, you should plan in advance as this will take time. Alternatively, you can rent a car or book a package tour.

3.) Bad Reichenhall: Over the border to Germany, you will soon get to Bad Reichenhall. It can be considered to be a destination for a salt mine tour since it was long dependent on mining and trade with the white gold. However, most visitors now come to Bad Reichenhall because of the local spa. International tourists like it for the vicinity to the Obersalzberg with the Eagle‘s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) and the Lake Königssee.

But still, there are loads of extraordinary places to visit and discover around Salzurg, but we would suggest you to travel around Salzburg and discover something for your own taste and joy! HAVE FUN!
