EVOLVING ROLES OF
TEACHER
INTRODUCTION
• Transformation from traditional "stand and deliver" teaching model to
that of the "guide on the side" teaching model.
• Teacher’s role shifted from authority figure to collaborator, or co-
creator.
• As opposed to the model of engaging classroom teachers in a passive
and cooperative manner, there has been a trend toward getting
classroom teachers into more active and involved partnerships.

• In the 21st century where people live in a global community and
cyber world, there is an increasing demand for qualified teachers
who can provide future generations with the quality education that
children need to face rapid global changes.
• The focus now is on producing students who are highly productive,
effective communicators, inventive thinkers, and masters of
technology.

TEACHER AS A INSTRUCTIONAL EXPERT
Instruction is a major component in teaching and it involves all activities a teacher adopts to convey or deliver knowledge.
Characteristic of Teacher as an Instructional Expert:• Learner motivation: Motivating the learner for searching new
knowledge and possibilities• Conducting Classes: Language used for communicating ideas in
class plays a significant role• Learning environment: A teacher has a subtle effect over a class
and he can immerse the learners in teaching so that they forget the physical environment and its distractions.
TEACHER AS A MANAGER Teaching is more than transmitting a certain body of knowledge to
the learner; it is motivating the learner to be responsible for meeting his own learning needs
Characteristic of Teacher as a Manager:• Preparation and time management: Preparation means not only
having a lesson plan in place, but also preparing the classroom for the lesson.
• Consistency: Students accept behavioral and academic consequences better when they see that the consequences are applied consistently.
• Mapped curriculum: Map the course curriculum so that it flows, building on previously learned concepts.
• Outlines and post expectations: Outlining academic and behavioral expectations at the beginning of the first class makes a smooth ride in the classroom possible
• Outlines and post consequence: Covering academic and behavioral expectations is effective only if the students know what consequences will follow failure to meet the standard.

TEACHER AS A COUNSELOR Teacher as a counselor and an educator provides academic,
career, college readiness, and personal/social competencies to students. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and student.
Characteristic of Teacher as an Counselor:• Patience: Needs to have patience with her students as they
process the discussions as it may take the student time to accept certain things and to move towards positive changes.
• Good listener: The teacher needs to spend significant amount of time listening to students.
• Compassionate: It is very important for students to feel that the teacher is compassionate towards their problems
• Empathetic: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the
feelings of others. The teacher needs to put herself in the shoes
of her student to understand the situation from their point of
view.
• Encouraging: There should be constant encouragement by the
teacher.
Strategy of Teacher as an Counselor:• Exploring the student’s personal beliefs, attitudes and knowledge
about working with diverse student populations.• Ensuring each student has access to a comprehensive school
counseling program that advocates for all students in diverse cultural groups.
• Addressing the impact that poverty and social class has on student achievement
• Identifying the impact of family culture upon student performance
• Using data to close the gap among diverse student populations • Enhancing their own cultural competence and facilitating the
cultural awareness, knowledge and skills of all school personnel
TEACHER AS A PRACTITIONER-RESEARCHER
Teacher-researchers raise questions about what they think and observe about their teaching and their students' learning. They collect student work in order to evaluate performance, but they also see student work as data to analyze in order to examine the teaching and learning that produced it.
Characteristic of Teacher as an Practitioner-Researcher:• Teachers should engage everyday in research, working with
students to facilitate learning; teachers develop lesson plans, evaluate student work, and share outcomes with students, parents, and administrators.
• On a daily basis teachers should design and implement a plan of action, observe and analyze outcomes, and modify plans to better meet the needs of students.
• In teacher research, the teacher chooses a question she wants to know more about (the research question), plans how to gather useful information (data collection), reflects on what she’s learned (data analysis), and determines how content or instruction can be modified to better serve student needs (conclusions or outcomes).
Strategy of Teacher as an Practitioner-Researcher:• Develop questions based on their own curiosity about their
students' learning and their teaching• Investigate their questions with their students systematically
documenting what happens• Collect and analyze data from their classes including their own
observations and reflections. Examine their assumptions and beliefs
• Discuss their research with their colleagues for support as "critical friends" to validate their findings and interpretations of their data
• Talk to their students• Write about their research (school-wide publication, national)
participate in teacher research web sites, online forums, and e-mail communications
CONCLUSION• Teacher as a manager will have to inculcate disciplines and social
values within student. Teachers are responsible to create a physical environment that engages all students. The physical environment should support effective as well as cognitive aspects of student learning.
• As a counselor she should be able to remove barriers to academic achievement, support social/emotional development, guide college and career readiness
• The strength of teacher research is the development of a better understanding of classroom practice in ways that are specific and local.
