CHARLES DARWIN(CHILDHOOD-EDUCATION-COLLEGE)

1809-1831:Age 0 to 22

• Darwin was born in Shrewsbury Shropshire England (12 February 1809) In a wealthy family

• He was an anglican• His father, Robert Darwin, a famous Doctor,

wanted him to be a doctor at the University of Edimburg, but Charles discovered he didn´t like medicine.

• In 1828 Darwin attended and graduated from Cambridge University to become a clergyman.

• Charles was a bad student. He preferred riding and shooting or beetle collecting.

• In Cambridge he met different naturalist teachers who made him to love nature

• When he returned home after his studies in Cambridge he found a letter from the botanic Henslow, a close friend of his proposing Darwin a journey around the world that would change his life.

JOURNEY OF BEAGLE(1831-1836: Age 22 to 27)

• It was arround the world in the naturalits ship HMS Beagle with Captain Robert FitzRoy

• During five years the ship was sailing exploring the east and west coasts of South America: Brazil, Argentina, Tierra de Fuego, Chile and the Galapagos Islands, and many other places including Australia and South America.

• Darwin, as a naturalist, he collected many specimens and took copious notes of this trip.

• In 1839 he published his book “voyage of the Beagle”

At the end of this journey Darwin questioned the origin of species.

ARRIVING HOME(1836-1882:Age 27 to 73)

• Back in London, Darwin became a well-known scientist.

• In 1838 he married his first cousin Emma Wedgwood and they had 10 children.

• At first his live was very quite, searching, writting, walking in his peaceful home in the country.

• Searching, he realised that his theory of evolution through natural selection, were in contradiction with his religion. So that he did not publish them

• Darwing left instructions for his wife, Emma, to publish his essay should anything happen to him. Because he did not want to published his ideas.

• Annie his favourite daugther died in 1851 and Darwin stoped to go to the Church and he felt seriously depressed.

During this time Darwin Knew that his faith was broken

JUST A COINCIDENCE?

What was the relationship between Darwin and Wallace?

• Alfred Russel Wallace, a young naturalist and scientist who was searching in Indonesia wrote a letter to Darwin in 1858 with an almost identical theory of evolution to Darwin´s.

• In 1858, Darwin and Wallace published togheder the theory of evolution in the Linnean Society of London.

Both arrived to the same conclusion

EVOLUTION THEORY

EVOLUTION THEORY HOLDS:

• All organisms –animals, plants, fungi- descend from a remote common antecesor.

How?

• By changing. Organisms change in time, usually very slowly, extremely slowly.

Which is the driving force for this changes?

• Natural selection selets the organisms better adaptated to the enviroment changes. It selects usually superior organisms.

• Published in 1859 in his most famous book The origin of Species by natural selection

WHAT IS CREACIONISM?

CREACIONISM HOLDS

• Humany, life, the Earth and the universe were created by a supernatural being (God)

• In United States ( in some political and religious circles) Evotution has been questionated to teach in public education.

• Creacionism is a theological argument

CREATIONISM VS EVOLUTIONISM

WHAT IS INTELIGENT DESING

INTELIGENT DESING HOLDS:

• Humanity, life, the Earth and the universe were created by an intelligent cause.

• The idea was developed by a group of American creationists in1990. The designer is God.

• It is a Theological argument

Scientific community holds that this new intelligent desing is not science

CONCLUSIONS• Darwing knew that there were changes in

the enviroment and in the organisms.• The enviroment is changing all the time.• Just think about climatic changes in millions

of years of evolution

• But how to explain the changes in organisms?

• Darwin didn´t know, he couldn´t give an explicatión

It was lately 1956 when Watson and Crick descovered de DNA and Nowadays there is

evidence that all the changes ocurr in the DNA, the genetic clu of the cells.

• This changes called Mutations are the base of evolution.

• Nowadays after the DNA was discovered the science that explains evolution is called

NEODARWINSM• There is not doubt that evolution is

science and the base of life in our plantet

Page 13: EVOLUCIONISM

WHY EVOLUTION?

• BECAUSE 2009 WAS DARWIN ´S BICENTENARY

• IT WAS THE DARWIN YEAR.
