The History of Cannabis

▪ Starting with the Chinese around 2900 B.C., many civilizations have transcribed their use of cannabis for a variety of holistic benefits. The Chinese primarily used cannabis seeds, very low in THC, the psychoactive component found in marijuana.

▪ While cannabis has been used for it’s physical benefits, the scientific rationale for its efficacy for these is, in many cases, not clear.

▪ Four thousand years later, scientists are still trying to determine the exact physical support cannabis provides.

CBD Basics▪ CBD stands for cannabidiol oil, extracted from the

flowers and buds of marijuana or hemp plants.

▪ CBD was discovered in the 1940’s and is one of 113 identified cannabinoids found in cannabis plants.

▪ When derived from the hemp plant, CBD does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component of marijuana.

▪ CBD contains fatty acids as well as vitamins including A, C and D.

Hemp Versus MarijuanaThe plant Cannabis sativa has two primary species, hemp and marijuana. Both contain CBD, but there's a much higher percentage of CBD in hemp, which also has very low (less than 0.3%) levels of THC compared to marijuana.

Active CBD Components

▪ Terpenes: The essential oil of cannabis is a blend of active compounds called terpenes, which are not unique to cannabis, and found in other plants such as lavender, hops, mangoes, citrus, pine, lemon, pepper, and green tea.

▪ Terpenes, not cannabinoids, are responsible for the smell of cannabis. All terpenes found in cannabis are FDA approved as generally regarded as safe (GRAS).

▪ Terpenes can modulate the effects of cannabinoids through their physically relaxing and comforting benefits.

Full spectrum and Isolate

▪ Full spectrum CBD: contains all cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant including CBN (Cannabinol), CBG (Cannabigerol), and THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin). It contains less than .3% THC.

▪ CBD isolate: purified CBD that has been extracted from the marijuana plant and isolated from the other cannabinoids.

The Endocannabinoid System

▪ The human body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that receives and translates signals from cannabinoids.

▪ It produces some cannabinoids of its own, which are called endocannabinoids.

▪ The ECS helps to regulate functions such as sleep and immune-system responses.

The Endocannabinoid System

▪ Endocannabinoids are natural chemical regulators in the body that interact with cannabinoid receptors and help maintain homeostasis. They seem to do this by detecting and regulating mood, hunger, memory, and more.

▪ If the ECS is affected, or the body is not producing enough endocannabinoids, these functions in the body may become unbalanced.

▪ Ingesting natural cannabinoids or applying them topically can restore this balance.

The Regulatory Climate

▪ The FDA is responsible for the regulation of CBD. ▪ CBD must be manufactured from the hemp plant and

processed to contain less than 0.3% THC to meet industry standards.

▪ The DEA removed hemp derived products from its controlled substance list in late 2018.

▪ The FDA still oversees hemp products to protect the public and patients, just as it oversees cosmetic products.

▪ The FDA has approved only one CBD-based drug, and it’s used to treat two rare types of epilepsy: Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. It’s called Epidiolex, approved for adults and kids over age 2.

Essential Oils and CBD Oil

▪ Essential oils are complementary to CBD.

▪ Each oil is carefully selected based on its profile and potential therapeutic benefits.

▪ At the center of each formula are pure Hemp Oil and Avocado Oil, serving as carrier oils. ▪ Carrier oils are derived from plants. ▪ They do not evaporate like many essential oils. ▪ They dilute the essential oil while simultaneously

delivering it safely and effectively.
