EDUCATION SESSIONS

Take some time out of your busy schedule to significantly impact your business by attending AWCI’s Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Meetings in Memphis, Tenn. The education sessions, “Recruitment, Retention & Risk Management,” “Talent Development Trends in the U.S. Construction Industry” and “Minimizing Risk and Avoiding Legal Problems,” are a must for all senior level industry professionals.

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

8 a.m. to 10 a.m.Recruitment, Retention & Risk Management and Talent Development Trends in the U.S. Construction IndustrySpeaker: Randy G. Nemchin, FMI Corporation

Recruitment, Retention & Risk ManagementIn this session, Randy Nemchin will discuss recruiting and retaining talent. The session will focus on the importance of collaborating with the human resources team to develop and plan effective strategies for filling vacancies and identifying gaps within the staffing process. He will also discuss the risk associated with not being attentive to guidelines necessary to comply with federal, state and local employment processes.

Talent Development Trends in the U.S. Construction IndustryIt’s been seven years since the economy “adjusted” in 2008. The downturn caused many to react by letting go a significant portion of their talent pool. As a result, some of the best talent chose to leave the industry leaving us with severe gaps in key positions. Now that the market is rebounding, the realization is that these people are not coming back and that non-traditional resources must be explored to fill these openings and get the job done. These shortages are not just for skilled craft workers but extend across all levels, including field supervisors, superintendents, project managers, estimators, middle managers and senior executives to varying degrees.

One change is how millennials have gained in both number and influence across the industry. Our response to the growth of this key demographic will be critical to the survival of contractors in the coming years and decades due to the fact that what we’ve done in the past won’t work for this target group. These new construction industry pro-fessionals are looking for companies that recognize their needs and respond with the culture and reinforcement to be successful.

FMI recently completed its “2015 Talent Development Survey” of leading construction firms across the industry. Survey topics include recruiting and retaining the best talent, performance management, succession planning, field management training, measuring training results, as well as challenges companies are facing. Beyond the statistics, we will share best practices from construction contractors and provide real-world examples for addressing these issues.

• Engage your senior leaders to transfer knowledge and experience to the next genera-tion of leaders.

Randy G. Nemchin, senior consultant with FMI, works with clients in all construction sectors to improve company, team and individual performance. Nemchin engages people at all organi-zational levels to implement creative solutions for stimulating maximum performance.

Peabody Duck March ViewingThursday, Sept. 22, 10:30 a.m.—11:30 a.m.Meet in the area marked for AWCI on the hotel’s mezzanine level at 10:30 a.m.

How did the tradition of the ducks in The Peabody fountain begin? Back in the 1930s Frank Shutt, general manager of The Peabody, and his friend Chip Barwick returned from a weekend hunting trip to Ar-kansas. The men had a little too much Tennessee sip-pin’ whiskey and thought it would be funny to place some of their live duck decoys (it was legal then for hunters to use live decoys) in the beautiful Peabody fountain. Three small English call ducks were selected as “guinea pigs,” and the reaction was nothing short of enthusias-tic. Thus began a Peabody tradition that was to become internationally famous. In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the fountain each day and taught them the now-famous Pea-body Duck March. Pembroke became the Peabody Duckmaster, serving in that capacity for 50 years until his retirement in 1991.

Nearly 90 years after the inaugural march, ducks still visit the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

Memphis Music Tour and LunchThursday, Sept. 22, 11:30 a.m.—4 p.m. • $199 per personMeet in the area marked for AWCI on the hotel’s mezzanine level. You will start by heading over to Beale Street to enjoy an authentic Southern lunch at B.B. King’s Blues Club. At a buffet lunch enjoy grilled sausage and cheese platter and fried green toma-toes, famous BBQ Ribs, shrimp and grits and organic pasta primavera with bourbon pecan pie or a hot fudge sundae for dessert. Non-alcoholic beverages are included in the tour price; alcoholic beverages can be purchased separately.

After lunch head over to a guided tour of Sun Studios, the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Leg-endary bluesmen like B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Bobby Blue Bland, Rufus Thomas and Junior Parker recorded their first records here, includ-ing rock and roll legend Elvis Presley.

After touring Sun Studios you will head to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. The story of Stax Records is one of a cultural phenom-enon that changed the culture of music forever. Stax Records launched the careers of unknowns who would become icons, cranking out a massive catalog of smash soul hits by the likes of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Luther Ingram, Albert King, the Bar-Kays, Booker T. & the MG’s, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus and Carla Thomas and

dozens of other artists. Because it is the only soul music museum in the world, it also highlights America’s other major soul music pioneers, including the sounds of Muscle Shoals, Motown, Hi and Atlantic Records, spotlighting the contributions of such soul pio-neers as Ike and Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, The Jackson Five, Ann Peebles, Al Green, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles and many others.

While at the Stax Museum, if you are feeling groovy, show off your dance moves in the “Express Yourself” Exhibit complete with a disco ball, vintage “Soul Train” videos and a round dance floor. Or, strike a pose at the STAX interactive green screen photo station for a complimentary photo.

Fun Facts about Mirimichi:• In 2009 Justin Timberlake and his

family bought Mirimichi Golf Course. After investing $16 million into reno-vating the course, while making it one of the most eco-friendly layouts in the country, Timberlake sold the course in 2014.

• Mirimichi is a Native American word meaning “place of happy retreat.” This name evolved from the belief that a golf course is a type of sanctu-ary, and that the game of golf has a rhythm that is a part of the nature that surrounds it. The moment you begin to explore these lush surroundings, you understand the significance of the name.

After evaluating feedback from last year’s golfers the Foundation is putting a twist on the 2016 tournament. The names of all golfers registered for the tournament will be drawn from a hat, and teams will be created. Foursomes will be kept to a mix of con-tractors and manufacturers for the opportunity of meeting new members and network-ing. The tournament format will be a scramble. So don’t worry if your level of play is up to par because you play from the spot of the best tee shot.

The winners will be announced during the Final Night Reception.

Foundation 50-50 RaffleWin money for yourself as well as the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry! Cash prizes will be awarded to three winning ticket holders. Hotel InformationAWCI’s Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Meetings will be held at the Peabody Memphis.

Peabody history dates back to 1869 when the original Peabody Hotel opened on the corner of Main & Monroe and immediately became the social and business hub of Memphis. In 1925 a newer, grander Peabody was built at its present location at Union and 2nd Street continuing the legacy of the “South’s Grand Hotel.” It was 1933 when ducks were originally placed in the hotel’s lobby fountain, setting in motion an 80-year tradition that continues today with the March of the Peabody Ducks. The Peabody name has become synonymous with the five North American mallard ducks that are now the living symbol of the Peabody brand.
