Youth News By Pastor Jen With a new school year comes a new season of adventures in youth group! We got off to a fun start with a day spent at Thunder Road in Fargo on August 18!

This fall we are going to be partnering with Bethel Lutheran Church for some fun Friday night activities. There was a dance on the 26th at Bethel, and we will host a “High School Coffee House” at Zion Chapel on Friday, September 2nd from 7-10pm. During this time, the Chapel will be open for high school youth to hang out, play some games (video games, pool, air hockey, board games, etc.), and of course have some snacks, since no party is a party without food!

We will also have a social night at Bethel on September 16th following the Homecoming game. Stay tuned for more info!

Our official Rally Day is on Sunday, September 18th with our weekly youth group gatherings beginning on the following Wednesday, Septem-ber 21. On the 21st we will begin the year with a fun night complete with food (pizza!) and a game night with some time to catch up after several months away. Remember: you are always welcome to bring a friend(s)!

I’m really looking forward to this new year and the adventures we will have together - and I hope you are too! See you soon!

More on Rally Sunday by Becky Dockter September 18th will be our kickoff to Sunday School this year! Sunday School will start at 9:00am followed by worship at 10:00. Our 3rd graders will also be receiving their Bibles at this service! An all-church potluck will follow the service, so bring your appetite and something to share!

UMW News and Announcements By Denise Eastin

It’s September! Time to begin our UMW General meetings and our Circle meetings once again. UMW will meet Thurs-day, September 8th at 7pm. Sunshine Circle will be hosting and the program, entitled “Poverty and Possibility” will be pre-sented by Lois Berndt. Also in September is the District Meeting Sept. 23-24 (see info on the bulletin board). If you are not already an active member of UMW, and/or have not joined a UMW Circle, this is a great time of year to take the plunge and be part of a world wide network of women who “are working on turning faith, hope and love into action of behalf of women, children, and youth around the world.” If it’s been a few years since you read Response magazine, or if you’re curious about the interests and impact UMW has on the world, there are copies of the magazine (along with New World Outlook) in our church library for you to read. If you decide to join UMW for the first time, a year’s subscription to Response will be purchased for you by our UMW group. A reminder to Circles … please check your membership rolls and officers list and be ready to report any changes at the UMW meeting in September. This updated information is needed for our 2017 UMW Booklet. The UMW Prayer Vigil for Sept./Oct. is scheduled for September 26th through October 2nd. Our subject is ‘International Day of Non-Violence‘. Our UMW group has been assigned the following time for prayer: October 2nd, 4:15pm to 5pm. Please mark your calendars. For more information see www.un.org/en/events/nonviolenceday/index.shtml During the next six weeks you’re going to be asked to volunteer and donate to Evergreen’s Fall Bazaar. Please give generously with a Can Do attitude when asked to sign up and participate! This is UMW’s biggest fundraiser of the year with net proceeds benefiting UMW Mission pledge commitments and the General Fund of Evergreen UMC. This event is also a wonder-ful opportunity to invite your friends and relatives to our church for a lovely afternoon of delicious food, fine fellowship, and fabulous shopping! You are needed to make the Bazaar a success! Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 15th.

Evergreen Plans Anniversary Celebrations By Sandy Olson

Evergreen has several anniversaries coming up. Next sum-mer we will mark 25 years since Great Bend and Evergreen United Methodist Churches merged. In 2018 it will have been 50 years since the EUB and Methodist denominations combined. The worship committee is looking for ways to remember and commemorate these events and others. If you are interested in serving on a short-term committee to make these plans, please contact the church office or Sandy Olson (642-4828).

Choir Begins New Practice Season By Sandy Olson

Adult choir will begin practicing at 7 PM on Wednesday, September 7th. We will sing for the worship services begin-ning on September 11th. We are always looking for more voices, so if you’ve felt the call to praise the Lord in song with us, please join us! I can assure you that you’ll be glad if you do. If you have questions, please give me a call (642-4828) and I’ll do my best to answer them. Happy September!

Mission News by Jan Moore During September we have been asked to collect INDIVIDUAL FRUIT CUPS for the Back Pack Program. Look for the totes in the Fellow-ship Hall for your dona-tion.

At the NDSCS Welcome, sponsored by the Ministerial Association on August 22, 2016, ice cream was shared with the students and Evergreen Members handed out towels, welcoming the students to Wahpeton and reminding them to be ser-vants to others. We were able to distribute 248 hand tow-els with our church information!!

Missions committee has been busy putting together Mis-sion Projects for the congregation to be involved in during the morning of August 28, 2016 for our Sunday of Service. (see pictures on page 8) OCTOBER 29-30, 2016 - ALWAYS looking for more in-volvement. We have made the decision to donate our hands-on mission to the Spirit Lake Ministry Center work-ing with Mike and Libby Flowers, to fulfill the theme of the 2016 Annual Conference which is “Living Generously; Unleashing God’s Gifts”. This year’s offering, “10,000 Hours Miracle Offering” has both a hands-on and financial component. We are invited to live generously by invest-ing our time to impact lives through our conference minis-tries. The hope is to have 10 people from each church pledging 10 hours of service to one of the conference ministries and to raise $100,000 to fund 10,000 hours of Internship. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. On site housing is available. The project will be deter-mined by how many hands we haveJ. There is still time to get involved!!

The only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought

and found how to serve. -Albert Schweitzer

Christmas Kids Project by Fern Bailey

Start thinking about being a shopper for the Christ-mas Kid's Project. A shopper contacts the family in October to see what outer clothing needs they might have for children. If you aren't willing to be a shopper, we always can use cash donations made out to "Christmas Kid's Project" or you can shop for a toy once it is listed as a "want". Sign-up sheets will be upcoming so watch for them. If you have questions, call Fern Bailey 701-642-8308 or 640-1640 (cell) or Julie McGovern at the church office.

Special Thanks….from UBS United Blood Services congratulates and thanks you for or-ganizing the recent blood drive at Wahpeton/Breckenridge. Your drive will help to assure that blood is available for pa-tients in need.

Your efforts and the support of Wahpeton/Breckenridge are greatly appreciated and will go a long way toward as-suring a strong blood supply and ultimately saving lives. 76 products were collected.

Again, thank you for your contribution and ongoing support of the community blood program.

Pastor’s Ponderings

I could easily write an article all about how I’m not ready for it to be fall because I love the summer season, complete with the heat and laid-back schedules most of us have. Yet I’d be lying if I didn’t also admit that I am ready for fall to be here! Maybe not the changing of seasons, but definitely the return of predictable schedules and routines. I am so ready, in fact, that I took advantage of one of the final “quiet” weeks of the sum-mer in August, and spent a few days in hiding so I could do some writing, planning, and dreaming. During this time I worked on sermon series, worship themes, lining up guest preachers, and ways we might continue to tie together the life of worship we share to-gether on Sunday mornings, and the life of Christian service and study that comes the rest of the week. As I thought about how to do this, I kept coming back to our summer study on the book of Acts. Since May, our Sunday morning worship services have focus on “The Book of Acts: Courageous Faith.” Indeed, Paul and other early Christian leaders lived courageously as they moved beyond anything comfortable or expected, and instead lived boldly, empow-ered not by their own hopes or dreams or energies, but by these things that were given to them through the Holy Spirit. Each week as I studied these texts I wondered, sometimes aloud: how would our lives be different if we lived with this kind of courage? This fall, I want to begin testing out that question first hand. I want you to join me as we kick off our fall sermon series that will focus not just on how God works in our own lives: but also, how God works in the lives of others around us, through us. Specifically: we’ll be talking about what it means to be a good neighbor, borrowing a line from none other than one of the best neighbors who ever lived: Mr. Rogers. Our Fall Ser-mon Series, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” begins on September 18, and over the next 3 weeks, we’ll wonder together what Neighboring looks like, what it means to live into that with intention, and, of course: what happens when that neighboring is spiced up a bit,

when we talk about what it means to “Be Salty.” Together this fall, I want us to focus on being salty together. What do I mean by that? I guess you’ll have to come to find out. But re-member: we’re talking about being good neighbors — so maybe you want to bring one with you?

See you soon! Pastor Jen Tyler
