Evergreen at the Brick Works Toronto, ON A plan to adapt historic use for future sustainability The reuse of the old Don Valley Pressed Brick Works site near Toronto will serve as a model of economic, environmental and social sustainability by blending interpretation of the site’s preserved natural and industrial heritage with the “green” development of retail and cultural venues on site. In association with Evergreen, APA developed an interpretive masterplan for the new Brick Works complex. The plan capitalizes on the Don Valley Parkway’s interpretive resources—from stories of its hydrology, geology and natural habitat, to its industrial history and contemporary use. After articulating Evergreen’s vision for the Brickworks, APA developed a site wide conceptual approach that was illustrated by a number of proposed visitor experiences, which included a fossil dig, a nature trail and interactive displays of brick production, among others.
