E ngā mātua, e ngā whanaunga me ngā hoa o te kura, tēnā koutou. Dear parents,

caregivers and friends of the College.

As I write this article, I am feeling rather sad, proud and excited at the same time. Our

seniors leave today to start study leave. I wish them all the best with their studies. So

many Y13 have received scholarships for further study and are placed for next year. Their

attitude and commitment has made me very proud.

As you prepare for your study time remember - find a quiet place to study, write notes as

you revise, go online and look at past papers and finally check your examination timetable

so you turn up at the right time!

I want to send all our juniors best wishes as they head out to camps during the next few

weeks. Live our values - be safe, be respectful and enjoy.

We have so many juniors to congratulate as well, so many Piopio College students are

achievers. As I name some of them I am bound to miss some out, I also want to

congratulate all those who attend every day, do the required work and live our school

values.

Particular congratulations to:

Sarah Bevege - for making Waikato Dressage team

Jessica Candy - for representing Gisborne in NZ Maori hockey tournament

Shaun Edgerton - for being placed 2nd BMX North Island

Year 8 Camp at Raglan Surf School

On Monday 10 November our Year 8’s will be travelling out to Raglan for a 5 day camp at

the Raglan Surf School. This world-renown environmental camp is in partnership with Karioi

Lodge and is nestled in acres of native bush, overlooking the beautiful West Coast.

As well as adding to their learning about sustainability, environmental issues that impact

our oceans and the key competencies, students will learn water safety as they are taught to

surf.

Other activities include; a visit to the local wind-farm, eel farm and organic gardens,

Kaiwhenua. It will also be an ideal setting for students to appreciate their surroundings and

develop independent learning attributes.

We were lucky to have the support of some parents who will be joining us: Mrs Johns, Mrs

Dunlop and Ms Alcock, will join myself, Mr Draper, Ms Butler and Mrs Barnsdall and share

in the exploration, learning and fun. Thank you very much parents, we are lucky to have

you join us and we hope you learn as much as we do.

Thank you also to Mrs Radice, staff and the BoT for supporting our camp. Also, well done

to those whanau who used the “pie” fundraiser to raise funds; you all helped raise over

$1500.00. Mr Bodger

7-a-side Rugby Piopio College push their way into playoffs Last weekend, Piopio College were proud to send away, their u14 and u16 7-a-side rugby teams to play in the Bay Of Plenty, Regional Schoolboy Tournament. Like the weather, our boys didn’t disappoint. Under sunny blue skies, the u14 team captivated the attention of the elite Bay Of Plenty schools, winning 3 out of their 4 pool matches. Demante Murray, Thomas Havea and Daniel Foss led an impressive attack, whilst Lorenz Kemp, Te Kuiti’s Isaac Mulgrew and Isaac Wana and Otorohanga’s Dallas McGuire steadied the team with some great defence; with McGuire and Mulgrew making numerous try saving tackles. The Jack Murray coached side, finished pool play in the top 4, but were outclassed by a passionate, Bay Of Plenty u14 15-a-side Championship winning, Rotorua team, in their semi-final. With no play-off for 3rd and 4th, Piopio were awarded 3rd place, equal with Te Whare O Mauao. Inspired by Te Kuiti High School’s Bowl winning side from the equivalent Waikato Tournament, the u16 team had set a target to also win the bowl. Coached by Mr Ben Draper and managed by departing Year 13, Isaac Griffin, the u16 team showed a lot of potential and courage early on, narrowly losing their first two games against eventual semi-finalists, Rotorua Boys and Trident High School, the 2013 u14 7s champions. Placed in the Bowl, Captain Hohepa Rapana-Gavin and Chris Dunphy’s physical aggression spurred on the rest of the team to win their next two games and be crowned Bowl Champions. Kaleb Adams had some storming runs, Paiaka Muraahi showed some glimpses of magic, but the player of the tournament was given to the determined and instrumental play-making wizard, Henare Williams. Co-written by, Kaleb “Head-flick” Adams, Heanre “Guano” Williams, and Paiaka “Whack-City” Muraahi.

Waitomo Awards Last week Waitomo Award students visited Ruakuri Cave and the Otorohanga Kiwi House. Each student was asked to take a series of photos in each venue on a theme. These were then turned into a project of study this week. I was impressed with the resulting work. Next week Y7 are in Parnell, Y8 at Raglan. Our Y9 and Y10 students will be camping on the beach Monday night and spending the day at Mokau, fishing or doing the White Cliffs walk. Bill Burnell

Chainsaw Course

On-site Chainsaw Course Matua David Hare from Tree Machine Services in Taranaki, is running a 3 day Chainsaw Course for ten of our Y11, 12, & 13 students this week. He is very impressed with the skill, attentiveness, and common sense that all of our students are demonstrating.

North Island BMX Champs Shaun Edgerton Over the Labour weekend Shaun competed in the North Island BMX champs. He raced really well and came away with a North Island ranking of 2 in the 11 to 12 years mixed cruiser class. He is also lucky enough to be attending a BMX training camp in December which is coached by Marc Willers who is a BMX Olympian.

The Lines Company and Y7 & Y8 Science

Mrs Jo Russell from the Lines Company took lessons with all of our Year 7 & 8 classes on Wednesday. The students learnt how NOT to get electrocuted. The best part was making their own circuits and it wasn’t long before we had sirens blaring, lights flashing and fans spin-ning. Lots of fun with a serious message. Thanks Jo. Mrs Rauputu
