The 4th Annual NCTLC Trust Ball was another great success for the charity. The glitzy occasion brought all volunteers, supporters and friends of the charity together again for an amazing night of great entertainment and reflection. Each year the ball provides a great opportunity for all those involved with the charity to stop and think about why everyone helps out and does their bit for this wonderful cause and gratitude is also shown to individuals and organisations that help the charity. Every year the charity makes pleads for extra help and assistance as the requests to the charity for support and guidance is asked for more and more from families being affected by childhood cancer.

And the ball provides the setting for thanking people who have supported the charity for another year and to help those in the

packed function room at the Marriott Hotel, Northampton, to understand why their continuing support is so important.

It was a night of celebrating all the achievements in raising much needed funds as well as looking back on all the events and support that has been provided to families; which makes such a difference. On the night awards were given to

Barton Today and Delapre Golf for all their support. The most prestigious award of the Owen Joseph Memorial Trophy went to Bold Dragon Cricket Club for raising almost £5k towards the Christmas Butlin’s Trip. Chief Executive Officer for the Charity, Janet Walker-Smith

said: “What a fantastic evening had by all! Thank you to everyone who came and supported us again.” A very touching moment from the night was a young girl, Shannon, who is currently undergoing her own fight with cancer, had her CD track of poetry played out to guests and as a surprise for her mum on the night. There was also an auction held and people bid generously for sports memorabilia, meals, spa treatments and golf days, as well as buying raffle tickets. To end with guests were entertained into the night by

Groove Connection, an incredible live band with a great variety of music performed to suit all tastes and got the dance floor bopping!

Followed by tracks being played into the early hours by DJS from Northampton’s Inspiration FM. Janet added: “It was great to see so many happy, smiling people. The band was great, an excellent job done by the events’ team.” Quiz Night Success. A great quiz night was held in Northampton in aid of the

NCTLC Trust, and the charity would like to thank everyone who took part in the event. Howes Pervical hosted the charity quiz night at the Picturedrome on Wednesday, December 4th and a lot of fun was had at the event all in the name of raising money for a good cause. Victoria Mifsud, Events manager for the NC TLC Trust, said: “Wow, that is what you call a quiz night, fantastically organised event by a group of enthusiastic and amazing people.” “As well as the quiz and a brilliant raffle, Howes Pervical also surprised us with a box of toys donated by the Disney Store which will be put to go use for our Butlin’s trip.” She added: “It was a great evening with a lovely bunch of people.”

In 1994, Graham Oliver and Steve Dawson, founding members of Saxon, reunited under the name Son of a Bitch (which had been Saxon's own name originally, before they became well known) and released Victim You. They performed under various names such as "SAXON-Son of a Bitch tour" and "SAXON-the early years", before deciding on their current name "Oliver/Dawson Saxon" in 2000. The band has been known by this name ever since, and despite recording other material from 1996 onwards have always relied primarily on Saxon songs during live sets. An attempt to perform under the name "SAXON" alone was prevented by Peter "Biff" Byford, another member of the original band, threatening legal action. In

1997, Oliver and Dawson registered "SAXON" as a trademark, and attempted, through their management company, to prevent Byford's band using the name on their promotional material. Byford opposed this registration, but initially the UK Patent Office held that the registration was valid, as Oliver and Dawson (as original members of "Son of a Bitch" in 1978) had equal rights to Byford in the name "SAXON". However, in the High Court, Laddie J overturned the registration, ruling that it had been applied for in bad faith. Oliver and Dawson were thereby prevented from describing themselves simply as "Saxon", and

obliged to prominently include the "Oliver/Dawson" element of the name in their advertising material. The name "Saxon" had been given to the band by then Freddy Cannon, Managing Director of Carrere Records UK, because retail outlets refused to carry "Son of A Bitch" in 1978. In 2011, front man of rock group Seventh Son Joined as the lead vocalist. See ad on page 15.

Hi all hope you had a good Christmas and trust that darn turkey has finally all gone? Ok, so we kick off the New Year with plenty to look forward to on the local Soul calendar during 2014, from a new ‘Jazz Funk Night’ to a Northern Soul All Nighter and Weekender, plus numerous live soul acts appearing. We will be bringing you news of these and more events happening in Northants in due course. Also we will be featuring some interesting profiles of characters that have shaped the local ‘Soul Scene’ and take a look at some of the key Clubs and Venues, past and present, that have put Northants firmly on the ‘Soul Map’ in the U.K. We start the ball rolling with a look at; long time local soul promoter and Dj Len Dopson. Most will know him as the man behind the much loved ‘Embankment Club’ Soul Nights at Wellingborough which ran for 15 years and latterly as one of the people behind the very popular Soul in the Bowl 2 Rooms of Soul (tm.) nights, at the Bowls Club Rushden. Northern Soul ! Not the only fruit in the Bowl ? ..The Len Dopson story Len’s route to the Northern & Rare Soul Scene would probably not be deemed a conventional one, for a start he is only 43.

The term “Northern Soul” was established around 1973 and the ‘scenes’ golden era is generally accepted as being from then until the late 1970s or arguably 1981 when Wigan Casino finally closed it’s doors. Len was literally just out of nappies in 1973 So, why Northern Soul Len? In many ways Len’s story explains why Northern Soul is still, or even more of, an enigma today for people of all ages and helps chart the full story of its history. Len’s tale started like many of ours, in a local youth club disco, but this wasn’t the 60s or 70s this was circa mid 1980s in Wollaston. He found himself gazing across the dance floor at some ‘oh so cool’ Mod Revivalists, dressed in their retro parkas and sharp suits dancing to the likes of the Jam, Madness, et al. At the end of the night he watched them zoom off on their scooters and figured “this is the scene for me”. He spent the next few years immersed in this new found thing! During which time he saved and bought his own scooter and started attending rallies and events for the like minded. It was at these events that he got his first taste of Northern Soul & Motown with Djs revisiting the music to enhance the Mod experience. Yes, Northern Soul had started to reach a new generation at a time when most of the ‘originals’ thought it had died. At this time All Nighters started to re appear over the country notably Stafford ‘Top of the World’ Club and the ‘100 Club London’. The promoters and Djs of these clubs had started delving back to the 60s & 70s discovering Soul records that had been missed or over looked by the first Northern Soul pilgrims. A new sound and style of their own was emerging,

slightly edgier perhaps but unmistakably Northern Soul . The second wave was coming! Enthused by the music he was hearing a still very young Len, embarked on his first promotion back in his home town of Wollaston at the Working Men’s Club. These were billed as ‘Rhythm & Soul Nights’ and were held every 2 weeks on a Thursday. They included a mixture of live Mod bands including the likes of ‘The Switch’ a very popular band in their day, with Len and guest Djs playing Soul/ Motown and Mod fave tunes. However he found himself drawn more and more to this Northern Soul thing, attending All Nighters such as the ‘Fleet’ at Peterborough and later further a field to the 100 Club London . In deed, in his own words “The 100 club became my second home” and will always hold great memories, not least as it’s where he met his wife Nina. Keen to bring this New Brand of Northern Soul to the County, Len starting looking for a larger venue to stage a full on Northern Soul Night and in 1992 started the Embankment Nights at Wellingborough. They continued for a further 15 years. Len describes “Its funny really, when I first started the nights, I wasn’t sure how long they would last as not all the locals took to some of the music we were trying to filter in, but I stuck to my guns and hopefully most enjoyed the journey” Modest words really, I think most would agree that a venue that runs for that amount of time must have got something right. Len’s policy of “pushing the boundaries” and bringing in some notable nationally revered Djs

Soul’in And Around Northamptonshire.

Page 29: Events on January 2014

29

including the Likes of ‘Soul Sam’ etc. kept things fresh in Northants and not only gained local support but drew people from all over the UK. Len has also Dj’d up and down the country at some of the most well known Soul venues including Cleethorpes Pier and maybe his crowning moment was being invited to Dj at the legendary 100 Club on more than one occasion. Len decided to close the doors of

the Embankment in 2007 due to business commitments and a young family having recently arrived. In his words he also felt another evolution in the scene had started, with a lot of people returning after many years away and wanting more traditional oldies based theme to the nights. The ensuing 6 years has seen this happen and been the topic of many an interesting debate, but its good to report that what we have now is an acceptance from all

corners and its great to see everyone from young to older attending Nights, and Len’s current project Soul in the Bowl pays testament to this, offering 2 rooms of Soul playing ‘Classics to Rarer Soul’ You will find Len behind the decks in ‘Len’s Den’ at Soul in the Bowl on 11th January 2014 Remember! Keep all your Soul News coming, email me at [email protected] See you somewhere soulful soon… Jem

Len Dopson with legendary DJ Soul Sam.
