POTENTATE’S MESSAGEFirst! I thank you all for your support in electing me as Potentate of Al Shamal Shriners for 2015!

Many thanks to the Motor Corps for an amazing job hosting the Chief Rabban’s night and for being my honour guard at the Potentate’s Ball. I am very honoured to be a member of this ‘Signature’ Unit.

I also extend my thanks to the Provost Corps for their assistance at the Installation of Offi cers and the Potentate’s Ball.

A special thank you goes to Ill Sir Bruce Hogle for nominating me for the past four years and the great job installing the entire Divan for 2015! Your leadership and support is greatly appreciated.

Many of you who were present at the Installation of Offi cers know Lady Jean Boone presented my jewel – which belonged to Ill Sir Bill Boone. Jean also fezzed me! I cannot express how deeply this has touched me as I considered Ill Sir Bill Boone my friend and mentor. Jean, my friend, thank you for that moment and know the jewel will be worn with pride and honour.

We tried something new this year at the Ball … it was fun and successful! Thank you Erin Anderson! Erin along with her parents Noble Don and Lady Linda started the year with a fundraiser. Lady Erin took photographs for a donation. She raised $700.00 - $350.00 for Temple Administration and $350.00 for the Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children. Thanks to the Anderson Family for all your support!

We were fortunate to welcome Noble Trevor Eliott into the Shrine in 2014 He is a DJ and provided the music for our evening … as my nieces said …”Thank you DJ Eliott – great music!”

I thank Denise Buhay, our Administration Manager, for all her hard work ensuring nothing was forgotten, as usual she handled all the registrations, tickets, seating and many other details.

Thank you to my Lady Bev for all you do and all you did to make things work.

I thank all the Nobles and their Ladies as well as all the family members that supported Lady Bev and myself in ensuring the Potentate’s Weekend was a success. To all our aides and their Ladies – lead by Chief Aide Doug Pare and his Lady Marnie – THANK YOU!

Our strength as an organization revolves around all of us. Many of you took part in making a successful weekend – THANK YOU!

My theme this year is “Kids First” and to get this started Lady Bev and I will be hosting “movie and popcorn” the fi rst Sunday following our Monthly Dinner Meeting…the cost of admission is to bring a child age 4 to 10 years of age … my Lady and I will be hosting - upstairs at the Shrine Center. The fi rst movie will be on February 8th at 1:00 pm. Please bring your kids, grandkids or nieces/nephews. Just come on out and have fun!

Our Valentine Fundraiser, led by Assistant Rabban Fred Susun, is coming up fast … Please come join us on February 14th at the Shrine Center for dinner and entertainment. Cost of tickets are 2 for $100.0 or $55.00 each. Call the Shrine Center to get your tickets.

I welcome all Nobles and their Ladies to drop by the Shrine Center anytime and join the many activities that we offer in support of our children … let’s remember to put “Kids First”.

Ill. Sir Terry ChapmanPotentate 2015

Dear Nobles:

It is such a pleasure to accept your gift of the box of Campbell Soup labels to benefi t children in our case. We are truly grateful for your support, particularly now, as we celebrate our 90th anniversary of providing the best orthopaedic care to children in need.

Sincerely,Angelique, N. HeinzenDirector of Development

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGSAnother year is in full swing. A very successful General Meeting and Potentates Ball were held.

The utilization of two facilities seemed to be a perfect match. The Shrine Centre facilitated the Chief Rabbans evening on Friday and the General Meeting, Necrology and luncheon on Saturday.

The Chief Rabban’s Evening was well attended. The Motor Corps organized a social that had everyone enjoying the event.

The Saturday events were well attended and the Fezing was, as usual, an event that showed the pride and pleasure each Divan member had for the philanthropy. The special moment for Illustrious Sir Terry Chapman was the receiving of the Potentate’s Jewel of Illustrious Sir Bill Boone, from Bill’s wife Jean. I’m sure this memory will last for a very long time.

Another fi rst for Illustrious Sir Terry Chapman -- Noble Don Anderson and his daughter Erin came up with a project to assist the Shriners Hospital for Children Canada and the Al Shamal Shrine Centre. Erin took pictures of couples for a donation. The donation total was 750.00 of which 350.00 went to the Hospital and 350.00 to the Shrine Centre. What a great idea for a fund raiser and a special donation by Erin, THANK YOU.

The mild weather we had in January was a test run on how the parking lot would drain when the spring melt starts. It appears for the most part, that the water will fl ow to the south of the property and east to the city drainage ditch on the west side of old 142 Street. There are some areas that need to be re-graded for better run off.

A grant has been applied for that will assist with some of the expense for grading and sculpting the parking lot.

The north fence has had soil put down to control the fl ow of water from the property north of the Shrine Centre.

I’m not sure if you have noticed, but there have been Nobles and Nobles Ladies house cleaning throughout the building. To date they have been active in the auditorium bar, kitchen and Biff’s lounge. I am not naming these people because as sure as I do I will miss someone. This task is very much appreciated and the effects are obvious.

The appearance of the interior of the Shrine Centre is showing some use and abuse. A paint committee is being put together, so be willing to volunteer. You don’t have to be a painter, just be willing to help. I’m sure there will be enough instruction for us all to be kept busy. The job will be done, one room at a time, so that there is control of how the task will be completed.

It is time to have the auditorium fl oor stripped, sealed and waxed. A quote has gone out to compare prices. The fi nal wax coat will be burnished to make a hard surface. This is the way it was done the time before and it lasted over two years.

The Shrine Centre is gradually moving forward with repairs and up keep. I see this as a positive step in the right direction.

With a full slate of Divan offi cers the task will be easier for everyone and I know more will be accomplished.

SHRINE PATIENT LETTERI wish every person had a clown in their life to help brighten up their day,To make them smile, laugh, and have a good time the ole fashion clown way.

I wish every person knew what I knew about clowns and what makes them tick,How their hearts are huge and they cry inside every time they see a child that’s sick.

I wish everyone could see the person behind that red nose and made up face,And see the love that radiates from within a clown for every child of every race.

I wish I could stand tall and yell to the world that clowns mean the world to me,Cause behind those big feet and crazy hair is a person that is a hero indeed.

Yes, a clown is a hero in every sense of the word because they make kids forget they’re sad,As they make dogs out of balloons, chickens out of napkins and help sad turn into glad.

I thank God every night for the clowns in my life that have helped me through my pain,Giving me the strength and courage to face life head on knowing I have everything to gain.

I wish everyone in this whole wide world had just one clown as special as the ones I know,Because my Shriner clowns are the Best in the World and I love them from head to toe!!!

BATTLE RIVER SHRINE CLUBGreetings Nobles,

With our Secretary down South, I get to try my hand at a message this month.

Noble Don Anderson and his wife Linda are enjoying the environs of Texas complete with seafood and BBQ. They had a chance to visit the Shriner’s Hospitals in Houston and Galveston. Their visit in Galveston was complicated by the arrival of several patients from the explosion and fi re in Mexico City, but that only made it all to more memorable. I will let him tell the story when he gets back.

On behalf of the Battle River Shrine Club I would like to congratulate the new Divan and wish them all the best in the coming year. I would also like to thank Noble Fred Susun for attending our January meeting in Edmonton on short notice to represent the Divan. We are looking forward to seeing our regular representative at our next meeting on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Forestburg. Zem Zem at 6:00, Dinner at 7:00 and meeting to follow. Visitors are always welcome.

This month many of our members will be busy at the Casino in Red Deer on February 18 and 19. We look forward to supporting several local Charities with the proceeds, along with our favourite designated Al Shamal recipients.

AL SHAMAL SHRINE - SOCCER PROGRAM 2015The Al Shamal Shriners are again offering soccer jerseys to children in Northern Alberta. Last year was another great success by getting the Masonic Lodges involved and by getting jerseys to the children in different areas of Northern Alberta. Therefore, we are asking that you check with your community and determine whether you would like to have a team set of soccer jerseys. If you decide you do, please complete the attached form and return by mail, fax or email to Al Shamal Shriners (contact information below), Attention: Recorder. Be sure to state the colour and sizes of the jerseys and the age of the children in the program. Each set consists of 18 jerseys.

As you can appreciate, the number of sets that are available is limited and depend on the donations received. Therefore, the sets are allotted on a “fi rst-come” basis.

There will be no cost to your lodge. All we ask is that the soccer jerseys are given to a team and that they are used for a number of years. The Masonic lodge has to order the soccer jerseys as they will

be given to you for presentation. The deadline for ordering is March 15, 2015.

By getting write-ups and pictures in the local papers that will promote Masonic Lodges, the Shriners and the soccer programs, we hope residents in your area will become more aware of the Masonic lodges and the Shriners. It is also hoped that more members of the Masonic lodges will consider joining Al Shamal Shriners.

We ask that you team up with a Shriner in your area and present the soccer jerseys in person to the team and players.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Fraternally,

Noble Gordon Harris Ill. Sir Terry ChapmanSoccer Chairman Potentate

Meet Our 2014-15 National Patient Ambassadors

Joe Dertinger of Waconia, Minn., and Katie Ladlie of Troy, Mo., have been selected as the health care system’s national patient ambassadors for 2014- 2015. The announcement was made after the premiere of their video, “Born to Inspire” during the July 2014 Imperial Session of Shriners International in Minneapolis.

Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two national patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care at the health care system every year. The Ambassadors share their stories to inspire others and raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Joe: A Champion SkierJoe was born with an unusual condition that involved all four of his extremities. He had a short tibia and no fibula on his right leg, and only three toes on his right foot. His left ankle has an unusual “ball and socket” type of joint. He was also born with only two fingers and a thumb on each hand, and the fingers on the right hand were webbed together.

At our Twin Cities hospital, Joe was initially seen by an orthopaedic surgeon and a hand specialist, who recommended surgeries to separate the fingers on his right hand and amputation of the right foot so that a prosthesis would fit better. Over time, Joe received physical and occupational therapy at Shriners Hospitals for Children, combined with lots of encouragement. That, and having a twin sister to keep up with, helped Joe continue to make progress.

Joe, now 18, has been involved in adaptive skiing for many years. In the last two seasons at the national competition in Park City, Utah, Joe has won the Men’s Junior National overall Alpine Skiing title. He is currently training for the Giant Slalom World Cup and the 2018 winter Paralympic games, which will be held in South Korea.

While Joe is passionate about his sport, he also wants to give back and help others with similar conditions and has enrolled in Century College’s Prosthetics Technology program; he is set to start in the fall of 2014.

Katie: An inspiration to OthersRelatively quickly after her birth, Katie was diagnosed as having a vascular malformation, a very

rare condition. She has been a patient at our St. Louis hospital since she was 2 years old.

Katie struggled with severe knee pain and other difficulties for years. By the time she was 12 years old, her knee had deteriorated to the point that her physicians gave her two options, knee fusion or amputation above the knee. Young Katie bravely determined to have the amputation as this would free her from the pain and from the anchor that held her back, which is how she viewed her leg.

Shortly after the surgery, Katie was introduced to adaptive sports, which was a turning point. She became very active and is no longer sitting on the sidelines in pain. And then she discovered public speaking, and became a patient ambassador for our St. Louis hospital.

Katie, now 16, hopes to be able to give back and inspire others through her new role as a national patient ambassador.

We know that both Katie and Joe will do exactly that in the coming months.

SILVER WINGSDear Friends of the Silver Wings Unit,

2015 looks to be an exciting year as we focus on strengthening our presence within Al Shamal.

We will again host the annual Halloween Spooktacular. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

In Memoriam

Here are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the divisions of our concordant body and it’s members who helped to make the Valentine Fundraiser a SUCCESS.

That being said, I hope that our temple continues to flourish in peace and harmony.

Be Part of Our Most Important Event of the Year: Imperial Session 2015

Shriners International’s 141st Imperial Session is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, through Thursday, July 9, 2015, in Houston. Mark your calendars now for the most important event of the year, and get ready for an event jam-packed with Shriner-style fun for all ages. We invite you to bring your whole family along and make your trip to Houston a truly unforgettable summer adventure.

As we all know, when Shriners gather, thoughts of our beloved philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children®, are always shared. On Saturday, July 4, one way everyone can help send Love to the rescue® for our patients is by participating in Walk for LOVETM, which supports our health care system. Also on Saturday, there will be opportunities to tour both the Galveston and Houston Shriners Hospitals and meet some of our patients and hospital staff. The tours are a wonderful chance to gain a greater understanding of the impact our health care system makes in children’s lives every day.

The activities don’t stop there – there will be a “Night at the Ballpark” on Monday, the Shriners’ parade and block party on Tuesday night, and a “Rep Night” with the Texas Tenors on Wednesday night. And for those times when you might want to leave the kids at “home,” there will also be a children’s area with licensed daycare professionals to look after your loved ones up to age 14. Additional activities include a Lady’s lounge and Units on Parade in Houston’s renowned Discovery Green (just across the street from the hotel and convention center). After Session, you can join Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt and Lady Lisa and Imperial Sir Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl for a cruise, which will depart from gorgeous Galveston Island.

Explore the City Houston is a vibrant metropolitan area filled with activities and attractions to satisfy any taste. The city offers topnotch restaurants, world-class shopping, a variety of attractions and cultural activities, four professional sports teams and multiple entertainments venues. Houston is also home to Space Center Houston and NASA’s Johnson Space Center; the 4th largest museum district in the country, which includes the interactive Children’s Museum of Houston; the Houston Zoo; the Downtown Aquarium; and the Kemah Boardwalk and Entertainment Complex. Just south of the city you’ll find Galveston Island, where they’re on Island Time all the time.

The 2015 Imperial Session HighlightsImperial Session will be held in the George R. Brown Convention Center, one of the largest and in the country, which offers Southern hospitality with a cosmopolitan twist. The convention center has 1.8 million square feet of air-conditioned space, that has been designated for the exclusive use of Shriners International during their stay. Thanks to its prime location, outstanding restaurants, entertainment and sporting venues, and downtown’s Discovery Park are all just a short walk from the convention center. Most of the Shriners’ competitions will be held on site, and the location will also be the start and end point for the parade.

Conveniently connected to the convention center by two air-conditioned sky walks, the official headquarters hotel, the Hilton Americas, is considered the crown jewel of the international Hilton chain. Having nearly everything in one location will make it easy to participate in as many events and activities as possible, as will the fact that the business meetings will be suspended on Monday afternoon so that the temple representatives can watch their units perform during the competitions.

The hosts of the 141st Imperial Session, Arabia Shriners, the Texas Shrine Association, Imperial Potentate Dale Stauss and Lady Cheryl, and Deputy Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt and Lady Lisa, are looking forward to meeting each of you this July for Shriners International’s biggest event of the year – Imperial Session 2015 in Houston.

DO IT FOR THE KIDSThe Divan ladies of 2014 would like to thank each and every one of you who contributed to our program “Do IT for the Kids” in memory of Lady Patti Geldart.

We undertook our project this past year as our way of honouring Patti and the commitment and love she had for the Shriners and the kids they help. The donations made to our program went directly to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada School Program for the procurement of E-Readers and other educational materials or technology the Therapists believe would assist in educating our children.

We raised $4,575.95…with a big thank you to our two major donors Al Amira Temple Dancers and the Al Amira Temple Ladies Patrol.

The three items that were available to win for a minimum $25.00 donation went to Annie Geldart – a pair of Calvin Klein Sunglasses; Diane Butlin – a 60 minute massage by Breanne Pare, RMT and Victoria Scott – a ring donated by Westmount Jewellers.

Again, thank you from the Divan Ladies and all the children at the Montreal Children’s Hospital School!

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILEHello everyone, we hope you all had a relaxing holiday season. Al Amira Temple has been busy. In September, fourteen members travelled to Fort McMurray’s Aurora Nile Club and spent the weekend there for a ceremonial of initiation and to participate in their annual pillow making bee. This Fort McMurray ceremonial was a fi rst for Al Amira and it is with pleasure we welcomed two new members Lisa Bolton and Kaurobi Pandit.

The next day we all met at Golosky’s hangar for the pillow making bee. With Princess Tirzah, Estelle as our task master, she made sure that there were no idle hands, which resulted in the completion of 176 heart shaped pillows. In December, the pillows were sent to the Montreal Shriners’ Hospital; thank you to Frank Dove and Jim Forbes for taking the boxes of pillows to Canadian Freightways for us. A big thank you goes out to Carol & Doug Golosky for opening up their facility for our use.

Our visit to Aurora Nile Club provided the opportunity for our Mentoring committee to facilitate the mentoring program to the members of Aurora Nile Club. To date we have 22 members who have received their mentoring certifi cate.

October brought Supreme Queen Marsha Sowers to Edmonton for her Offi cial Visit and Ceremonial. Welcome to our fi ve new princesses, Idella Barr, Taylor Curnew, Yvette Magas, Sharon Semeniuk and Barbara Thomas.

By the end of December the following items were sent to the Montreal Hospital, $1950 in gift cards, 10 quilts, 14 plush toys, assorted toys,

books, craft/school supplies and socks, for a combined total of $5378. The next time you meet a Daughter of the Nile member, thank her for remaining committed to the Shriner’s philanthropy, we continue to share and care.

Installation of Offi cers for Al Amira Temple will take place March 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the Shrine Center. Best of luck to the incoming offi cers, may all of you have a great year.

And, Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Terry Chapman and his Divan and best wishes for a successful 2015.

FOLLOW THE FEZ TO GALVESTONWow, tough day today. Lady Linda and I were in Galveston to visit the Shriners Hospital, as you know this is one of our burn treatment hospitals. Dustin Johnson, the PR person at the hospital was tied up preparing media responses because the hospital was preparing to receive patients from the explosion in Mexico City and so was unable to conduct the tour. Hillary, who is one of the child life specialists, gave up her time and did an awesome job fi lling in.

If you know me, you know I don’t show much emotion but as a Shriner everyone of us should visit a burn hospital. This was one of the most emotional experiences of my life! At the beginning of the tour as we were standing in a hallway with Hillary explaining the fl oors and what happened where, a family got off the elevator, when the mother saw my Fez she immediately came and shook my hand thanking me. A few minutes later she returned with her son, who took my hand and said “thank you for all you have done for my brother”. Speechless doesn’t begin to describe how I felt. I stumbled a “your welcome but it really is the staff who deserves the thanks” but his mother said “but they can do it because of what you do, thank you so much.”

We then proceeded to see the entire hospital, the ICU, the treatment areas, the rehab areas, play room, family waiting rooms and perhaps most importantly on this day, we saw conference rooms full of staff preparing to receive patients from Mexico. We

saw our kids in every place we visited and when they saw the Fez they smiled and waved. Most of the families spoke Spanish so we were not able talk to them, although Hillary was able to translate for us with a family who were preparing to leave. Their son was leaving with braces and crutches after arriving with a walker, just one more example of how this hospital so totally drained me emotionally.

Finally I had the opportunity to thank many members of the staff for all they do for our kids and they in turn thanked me for all we do to keep our hospitals running. Ill. Sir Chapman’s pins are now being worn by staff and patients in Galveston, in Mexico and of course in Houston from yesterday.

The photos I have shared show some of the artwork done by Hillary and a former patient. It certainly helps to make the areas feel less hospital like and very calming.
