In MemoriamHere are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

Potentate’s MessageAnother parade season is drawing to a close. As previously announced, there were changes as to who can participate in Civic Parades. The extract of that section is CIVIC PARADES. In civic parades, Nobles, their ladies and children may participate with the approval of the Potentate, so long as their ladies and children participate only as passengers in non performing, non-competing vehicles with no less that four wheels. I have approved a number of parades as requested from different units. We do require a list as to who is participating for insurance purposes.

A THANK YOU goes out to all those that participated in the various parades to make SHRINERS visible in the communities. A special thank you to the Provost Corps for their attendance acting as my escort at the parades I have attended.

The fall looks like it is going to be busy with Ladies Night coming up shortly as well as the fall Ceremonial. Registrations for both events are in this issue of the Sahida. Come join us for a good time.

This is your Shrine Centre. Remember to get a candidate for the Fall Ceremonial coming up in October. An increase in membership is vital to maintaining the centre going forward.

Al Shamal Circus is also fast approaching. Participation is a must to make this event a success. If you haven’t already volunteered please do so by calling the Shrine offi ce.

sahidaRECORDER’S RAMBLINGSThe Imperial Session has once more come and gone. Six of our Divan attended the sessions and found them to be very informative. The Past Imperial Potentate was taken to task for the improper use of funds. The ladies and children can now ride on four wheeled Shrine vehicles in a Civic Parade if it isn’t in a competition. This requires prior approval from the Potentate of the day and must have approval for each parade they wish to be in.

The Al Shamal Divan were very appreciative to Liberty GMC for the donation of two Denali GMC vehicles for our use in the Shrine Parade on July 4th. They provided these vehicles at no charge to Al Shamal. They also picked us up at the airport and when we dropped off the vehicles we were driven back to our hotel. This gesture doesn’t seem like much if you are close but they are about a half hour away from were we were staying. One other interesting coincidence of this dealership is that most of them are Shriners or Masons.

Al Shamal has been recognized by Shriners International once again. Noble Neville Bush, our long time Membership Chairman, has been selected to the Imperial Membership Committee as a Membership Development Specialist (MDS) for Team #1. Neville has been a dedicated Membership Chairman for Al Shamal Shriners and has been given a deserved appointment. Talk to Neville about his membership goals and offer him your support.

It is very unfortunate, but the Black Camel has struck far too many times this year. This represents a loss to our Shrine Center. I encourage you to please try and help replace the void created by these happenings.

sahidaGREETERS UNITLooking for a Unit to join? The Greeters, one of the original units in the then Edmonton Shrine Club, would be a very good option. Aside from a very affordable membership fee and the ability to join Shrine activities at a very relatively low (to zero) cost, the unit requires very minimal monthly commitment as it meets once a month with our ladies, thus combining both business and social events. There is no initiation fee but nominal annual dues ($25.00) are collected. The members sport a green formal dining jacket and an informal jacket.

Who are the Greeters? The Greeter’s Unit originated in 1931 when it was then known as the “Glad Hand Committee”, whose job it would be to greet guests and make them welcome at Shrine gatherings. This committee remained so named until the Edmonton Shrine Club formed the Greeters Unit in 1951.

To date, the Unit has 28 members and meets on the last Sunday of each month for dinner with their wives. A business meeting follows the dinner and the wives socialize.

Participating in Shrine parades, the Greeters showcase an antique (1951) fi re truck . It is not unusual for people to mill around this fi re truck before and after the parades and be amazed at its antiquity and how well it has been maintained. During the parades, kids and adults alike always cheer on when they hear the oogah-oogah of the truck’s horn.

Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children® OpenJustin Timberlake has teamed with Shriners Hospitals for Children® for the PGA TOUR’s Las Vegas stop. For more information visit www.jtshrinersopen.com. Follow tournament updates on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.

The annual Al Shamal fundraisers, The Shrine Circus and the Auction, also sees the Greeters in the frontlines selling souvenir programs, 50/50 tickets, greeting guests and seeing to it that they feel right at home with the Shriners.

Beside the parades and fundraisers, they also serve the Al Shamal Temple by taking registration at regular monthly meetings, selling raffl e tickets as well as any other duties assigned by the Potentate. Social functions include a pancake breakfast, summer barbecue, and a Christmas party. We raise funds by participating in the circus, parades, raffl es, cash calendars and 50/50 draws.

As the Unit adapts with the changing times, we are looking at innovations particularly in our social and business events as well as parade showcases. These are indeed fun times for the unit! If you want to be a part of this, please contact any of the Greeters or feel free to join us in our monthly dinner meetings at the Yellowhead Casino every last Sunday of each month (except July and August) at 6pm. You may also inquire at the Shrine Offi ce and they would gladly help you.

Alternatively, you can also contact the unit’s Secretary/Treasurer Noble Doug Troock at [email protected] or 780-463-6994.

Noble Sam Malayang.

EDMONTON 2012 SHRINE CIRCUSOur rescheduled annual circus dates of October 13th and 14th, with shows on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm. is quickly approaching. The circus provider, Cindy Migley is busy putting the fi nal touches to the show, which we expect to be an outstanding production.

The biggest difference will be that there will not be any exotic animal acts in this circus. It is my feeling that pressure from various animal rights organizations combined with the logistics in obtaining these acts, has been the contributing factor not only in our circus but other successful ones throughout North America eliminating these acts. Regardless, we are very confi dent this circus will be an outstanding professional production and a complete success for Al Shamal Shriners.

Please remember that to be a success we need the support of all our membership! If you are able to assist in any way, please contact the Shrine Circus at 780-413-3400.

The circus offi ce should be open by the start of September, Ticketmaster has a new program which they need to train Isabel and LaVerne on.

The ticket prices are as follows:Adults $17.00 (age 13 years +)Family Pack $49.95 (2 adults & 3 children)Children $10.00 (3 – 12 years)Noble Tickets $45.00 (5 tickets at $9.00 each)Groups $10.00 (20 or more people)

Hunter Woodhall from Syracuse, Utah, and Jérémy Gabriel from Quebec City, Canada, have been selected as the health care system’s patient ambassadors for 2012-2013. The announcement was made on July, 4, 2012, after the premiere of their video: “Two Worlds Apart – One Place of Hope” during the Imperial Session of Shriners International (National Convention) in Charlotte, N.C.

Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® chooses two patient ambassadors to represent the thousands of children who receive care at the health care system’s 22 facilities annually, regardless of their ability to pay. The Ambassadors will share their stories to inspire others and raise awareness of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Meet Hunter Woodhall and Jérémy Gabriel, the Athlete and the Artist.

The AthleteHe plays basketball, football and soccer; he wrestles; he runs track, snow skis, swims and roller blades, all with two prosthetic legs.Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with fi bular hemimelia of the left leg. The condition is a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf, which may require amputation or bone-lengthening procedures to correct. In addition, his right ankle was fused.

The Woodhalls had a diffi cult time fi nding information about Hunter’s conditions. After exploring options that offered no real hope, the Woodhalls contacted Shriners Hospitals for Children.

After consulting with a team of experts at the Tampa, Fla., facility, the Woodhalls proceeded with the amputation of Hunter’s feet. After his surgery – at just 11 months old – Hunter was soon walking and running around. He hasn’t stopped since.

Later, the Woodhalls moved to Syracuse, Utah, where Hunter became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City. Hunter is a straight A student and an accomplished athlete. The team of experts at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Salt Lake City has always provided options to help Hunter

be able to do anything he wants to do, including fi tting him with some of the fi rst Flex-Foot Cheetah custom feet that the hospital had ever provided, as well as special liners for wrestling, in addition to his prosthetic legs for daily use.

The ArtistHe has sung for both Céline Dion and the Pope; he has recorded two albums and co-authored a book. He was born deaf.

Jérémy Gabriel, 15, of Quebec City, Canada, was born prematurely with severe facial malformations and other complications requiring intensive care. Jérémy was fi nally diagnosed at 6 months with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. In addition to head, skull and facial deformities, children with this condition generally have absent or malformed ears, which can cause hearing loss.

Jérémy was referred to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada at the age of 5 for treatment. There, the family met Lucie Lessard, M.D., a plastic and craniofacial surgeon. Dr. Lessard suggested a BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid) Implant. Jérémy received his implant in June 2003, at age 6. After the surgery, Jérémy was fascinated with sound, and discovered he could sing. In fact, he has perfect pitch. Jérémy is scheduled for additional surgery later this year to reconstruct his cheekbones, as well as surgery on his jaw, which should improve his breathing, chewing and appearance.

Jérémy now attends a high school specializing in performing arts, where he is an excellent student. He is preparing for a career in the music business.
