Chris Barber OBE (88) is one of the last British jazz legends around and an icon of traditional jazz in the United Kingdom. He and his 10-piece band return to Cadogan Hall to celebrate his 65th anniversary as leader of his band on a full-time professional basis and 70th anniversary of starting his musical career.

The BIG Chris Barber Band, inspired by the great Ken Colyer Jazzmen, features everything from New Orleans to blues to late ’20s Ellington, played with extraordinary panache and skill.

Enjoy songs like ‘Bourbon Street Parade’, ‘Jubilee Stomp’, ‘Petite Fleur’, ‘Ice Cream’, ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’, and many more in this exciting evening of high-quality jazz and blues.

Around 1820, a change was happening in Western music. Restraint and formality were on their way out and expression and emotion were in, marking the change from the Classical period to the Romantic.

Schubert’s Eighth Symphony, which he started writing in 1822, is often called the first Romantic symphony. Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony, written a few years later, is 100% Romantic, and filled with Italian atmosphere that he soaked up during a trip across Europe.

Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s beloved husband, was born around the same time. Although he’s often praised as a champion of art and science and industry, his work as a composer is mostly overlooked. Which is a shame – this selection of songs shows all the hallmarks of a young man growing up alongside romanticism.

There is a great selection of wonderful music for strings alone, often appearing in the shadow of larger orchestral works. The aim of the founder of The 23, conductor David Cutts, working in conjunction with chamber musicians and leader Paul Barritt, is to bring this great music to the concert hall with fine players and sufficient rehearsal to reveal its distinction.

The works in this programme include two of Elgar’s masterpieces from 1892 and 1905 framing Janáček’s youthful but enchanting Suite from 1877 and Barshai’s arrangement for string orchestra of Shostakovich’s most played quartet, the Eighth. This is a highly personal piece, dedicated ‘to the victims of fascism and the war’. It was written in an intense three days in Dresden and premiered in 1960. The string orchestra version brings it even greater dramatic weight.

The collaboration of Miles Davis with arranger Gil Evans produced three superlative albums: Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead and Sketches of Spain. The sublime orchestrations feature instruments seldom heard in jazz (oboe, alto and bass flutes, French horns, bass clarinets and tuba) creating a gorgeous backdrop for Miles’ plaintive soloing. The concert will also feature music from Milestones and Kind of Blue (the bestselling jazz album of all time).

Renowned music journalist, author and TV presenter David Hepworth will present the show. Pete Long, musical director of the Ronnie Scott’s Orchestra conducts and Freddie Gavita, winner of Best Trumpet Player at the 2017 British Jazz Awards, shares the role of Miles with acclaimed British trumpet star Steve Fishwick.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra opens its 2019-20 series at Cadogan Hall with stunning works that evoke the colours of the landscapes that inspired them.

Raising the curtain is Smetana’s Vltava from Má Vlast, portraying a morning on Prague’s Moldau river, in which the dancing playfulness of the flutes and unique glimmer of the strings give the piece an irresistible charm.

Following is Elgar’s Cello Concerto, a staple of English Romanticism performed by renowned cellist and RPO Artist in Residence 2019, Kian Soltani. Completing the programme is Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 which leans heavily on the natural folk rhythms of his homeland to paint a picture-perfect summer in Bohemia.

Liszt’s A Hundred Years Ago was first performed in Weimar for the festivities celebrating Schiller’s 100th birthday. A theatrical melodrama featuring actors interacting with Liszt’s incidental music, this performance is a brand new dramatic conception by Gerard McBurney.

It is followed by Der Rosenkavalier Suite, an instant success with its Mozart-like farce and flurry of waltzes. Abounding in melodic splendour, this suite captures the most celebrated moments of the opera from which it is taken.

To conclude, Hummel’s joyful overture, composed to celebrate Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, interrupts its energetic chatter for a resounding burst of God Save the King.

Frustrated lovers, the pursuit of money, inter-generational rivalry and a false identity: Un giorno di regno has all the ingredients for a classic Italian comedy. But Un giorno di regno was a notorious failure at its world premiere and soon disappeared from the stage.

A new critical edition has revealed just how much care Verdi put into the work – re-directing attention to its succession of brilliant arias, comic mishaps and poignant emotion. The time is ripe for Verdi’s comedy to be heard again, reminding us all of the truths to be uncovered in mischievous fantasy.

Brahms’ last symphony is a stalwart of 19th-century symphonic repertoire. Its rich passages and themes are at their most affecting in the finale when the multiplying variations create a certain dark, intellectual impulse that is at its most exposed in the Symphony.

Pete Long’s superb band presents its re-creation of this historic Battle of the Big Bands featuring ‘Sing Sing Sing’, ‘Bach Goes To Town’, ‘In the Mood’ and Miller’s first million-seller ‘Little Brown Jug’.

The evening also includes music from two other great Carnegie Hall concerts of 1939. Louis Armstrong’s debut and John Hammond’s ‘From Spirituals to Swing’ which featured music from the Count Basie Orchestra and Lester Young’s Kansas City Six.

After having toured around the world as a bandleader and recently appearing on records by Christian McBride and Gregory Porter, in 2018 Sands was named creative ambassador of The Erroll Garner Jazz Project.

Sands has that same affable understanding of the audience as he recognizes their innate desire to be entertained as well as enlightened. He says, ‘Pop music is essential in jazz. It’s new melodies, it’s new stories, or same stories told in different ways. Jazz is about storytelling and pop music has a unique story to tell.’

Drummer Ralph Peterson Jr assembles an all-star group to pay tribute to The Jazz Messengers, the prolific big band collective led by his mentor, the late Art Blakey. Marking the 100th year of Blakey’s birth with selections from a new recording, The Messenger Legacy will feature musicians wishing to preserve, protect and honour the legacy of an artist who was much more than a bandleader to them all.

30 years ago, Peterson was a 21-year-old emerging musician chosen to play by Blakey in the 1983 version of The Jazz Messengers’ two-drummer big band, and remained the second drummer until Blakey’s passing.

Inspired by his teachers Borodin and Glazunov, the opening concert of the RPO’s 360° series features Shostakovich and the works that were instrumental in forming the radical Russian composer’s music, presented and conducted by RPO Principal Associate Conductor Alexander Shelley.

Whilst Borodin and Glazunov demonstrate the rich Russian traditions produced in the 19th century, it is perhaps with Shostakovich’s contemporary Prokofiev that comparisons are most readily drawn. Shostakovich’s legacy has taken the course of a composer heavily affected by political demand. In navigating the harsh realities of the Second World War and appeasement of the Soviet regime came his Symphony No. 9, an abstract expression of hope for a nation ravaged by war.

The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Cadogan Hall is a two-minute walk from Sloane Square tube station, which is served by District and Circle lines, and one stop from Victoria station with mainline and additional tube connections.

Sloane Square Tube StationTwo minutes’ walk Upon exiting Sloane Square station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street towards Cadogan Hall.

BusFrequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street.

Taxi There is a well-served taxi rank located on Sloane Square opposite the tube station.

ParkingA limited number of parking bays are available on Sloane Terrace, Wilbraham Place and Sedding Street after 6.30pm. There is an NCP car park at Cadogan Place.

The Gallery

Access

Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist customers with access needs including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits and members of our Access Scheme may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free personal assistant seat. Please contact the Box Office or visit cadoganhall.com/access for an Access Scheme registration form.

Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the lower foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities.

The GalleryPlease note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seats are only accessible via a staircase which consists of 62 steps. Customers with significant mobility problems are advised not to book Gallery seats.

Customers with hearing requirementsThe auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid.

Customers with sight impairmentGuide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.

Food and drink

BarsCadogan Hall’s bars offer a large selection of wines, beers, spirits, champagne, soft drinks, tea and coffee.

You can pre-order interval drinks at the bar before the performance to have them ready and waiting for you after the first half.

Special occasion? You can also pre-order glasses of champagne when booking online.

For the majority of performances, drinks may be taken into the auditorium in our compostable glasses. Please note that you will not be permitted to bring your own food and drink into the Hall.

FoodA selection of sandwiches, snacks and confectionery are available at all bars.
