A note from the desk of Mayor Pro Tempore William E. Robinson – October 2010 Residents, Visitors and Friends,

For more than two decades as the councilman representing Ward 2, I have made it my mission to be open and to work hard for you. Now, I am equally determined to ensure residents in Ward 2 don’t bear too great a burden as a result of these tough economic times.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the residents who have shown their dedication to helping our community make it through this economic crisis. I was heartened by the number of people who attended my Town Hall meeting in September and by others who took the time to offer suggestions, ideas and comments through, budget reduction suggestion forms, email messages, meetings with me personally and at other public meetings over the past couple of months.

The City Council and I are continuing to search for ways to align our revenues and expenditures. The ongoing revenue shortfalls have forced us to make tough decisions. We are continuing to work with our union leaders to find more ways to save money and ultimately reduce the number of future layoffs.

Additionally, the City Council has asked Acting City Manager Maryann Ustick to provide a Budget Reduction Plan 2 to address the $42 million fiscal shortfall for Fiscal Year 2011-2012 later this month.

I am committed to looking at all possible options and ideas in order to find viable and sustainable solutions for this problem. Feel free to contact the City with ideas you may have by sending an email to [email protected]. _____________________________________________________

The North Las Vegas Police Department, Home Depot and other local businesses are pleased to present SAFE HALLOWEEN, a one-stop shop for candy, trick-or-treating, games and more. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31, in the Home Depot parking lot, 1275 W. Craig Road. For more information, call (702) 633-2326. _____________________________________________________ Mortgage fraud alert The Nevada Attorney General’s Office has issued the following warnings about new mortgage and foreclosure scams. Please, be aware and be careful of deals that sound too good to be true.

• AUTOMATIC REFUNDS- company charges $3,500 for loan modification services. Company representatives do not do any work on the file. But they automatically send a refund check to the consumer for $350 and keep the rest, saying they “tried” to get a loan modification but the bank rejected them. Few consumers complain because of the company’s claim that it “tried,” and they received a partial refund. This scam is simply the latest spin on the old scam of “phantom help.”

• DOUBLE ESCROWS- company tells bank they have a short-sale buyer at a low price in order to get an appraisal. The company does not tell anyone that they have a second buyer lined up to buy the house once the short sale goes through. The company sets up escrow and closing for the same day on both deals. The bank gets cheated on the original short sale since it is not legitimate and the scammers make a profit on the second deal as well.

• PRINCIPAL REDUCTIONS- companies guaranteeing or advertising a principal reduction. Most lenders will not agree to a principal reduction but scammers use this as an advertising ploy to get consumers’ money and business.

• PHANTOM INVESTOR PURCHASE- scammers falsely claim they have investors willing to purchase an owner’s home from the bank and then resell it back to the owner at a reduced mortgage. The investor pools usually do not exist and the scammer is taking the homeowner’s money up front but does not provide any real assistance.

James Clubhouse celebrates improvement

The refurbished Boys and Girls Club in North Las Vegas in September celebrated its first year as the James Clubhouse, named for James Cashman. The aging center, located at 2530 E. Carey Ave., last year received $660,000 from the City of North Las Vegas in federal Community Development Block Grant funding to refurbish its building and revive its programs. Improvements included a remodeled gymnasium, refurbished meeting rooms and office space.

The Cashman family contributed $1.5 million for the renovation project.

Hundreds of children participate in dozens of programs provided by the organization to address today's most pressing youth issues and to bolster the skills they will need to succeed in life.

The Boys and Girls Club provides programs to help children with school. It also provides programs that teach about environmental stewardship, health, the arts and careers. Other programs focus on alcohol, drug and pregnancy prevention, gang prevention, leadership development and athletics.
