Summer 2015 IT’S REGATTA TIME “Medals” will be up for grabs at the annual Aspenhof Regatta on Sept. 5. Annual end-of- summer fling is upon us The 2015 Regatta will be here before you know it. Mark your calendars for Sept. 5-6. This weekend has become an Aspenhof family tradition dedicated to celebrating our community. Highlights include game for all ages, swimming, boating, golf, food, music, fellowship and a cabin tour. Also on the schedule: an owners meeting in which three members will be elected to the Board of Trustees. The Regatta is a highlight event for owners and their guests. Its success depends on volunteers willing to plan and/or assist with the many activities. I would appreciate and welcome your willingness to help. This is a wonderful time to get to know more of your neighbors. Newcomers or veterans: All are welcome to pitch in. Fishing Derbyreels in the kidsAspenhof ‘s annual Fishing Derby on Memorial Day eve attracted more than 30 young anglers, who drowned a lot of worms pursuing lunkers and bait-stealers alike. Audrey Swaine (cabin 19) caught 13 fish to cop honors for biggest stringer. Duncan Clipp, a guest at cabin 120, and Rachel Love of cabin 22 shared first place for largest catfish, each landing a 21½-incher. Charlie Van Well (cabin 42) had the biggest bass, measuring 12½ inches. Honors for the biggest bluegill, 9 inches, produced a four-way tie among Audrey, Duncan and Gus and Joe Wetzel Meehan (cabin 120).All contestants received a goodie bag, snacks and participation prizes. Maria Wetzel (cabin 120) organized the event, taking over for long-time director Suzanne Bremehr, even managing to hold off the rain on a threatening day. A fine showing by all!

Gate swings back in action
Aspenhof’s familiar front gate was back near its old post in April after a long hibernation in the tool shed while construction on a new entrance was under way. In a contest to predict the date and time the gate work would be completed, Greg Sayuk (cabin 69) took first place and won three bottles of Missouri wine. His guess was just 26 hours and 56 minutes short of the actual finish on April 25. Runner-up was Tom Luft (cabin 114) and third place went to Michael Strauss (formerly of cabin 132). Meet the candidates
Two newcomers and an incumbent are seeking positions on the Aspenhof Board of Trustees. Susan Seymour Westcott (cabin 44) and Matt Doell (Cabin 32) are seeking first terms and Karel Smith (Cabin 83) is running for a second term. They will be on the ballot when cabin owners vote at the annual owners meeting on Sept. 6. Three three-year terms are to be filled.
MATT DOELL, Cabin 32: I was on the board once before, and found it to be a good way to meet many of our neighbors. Our sons are now in college and my wife, Kris, and I are finding any excuse to spend time at “the cabin.” I am an engineer by trade and a school board (Rockwood) member by choice. Many cabins have changed hands over the years. I look forward to more opportunities to meet new friends and do what I can to help take care of our community.
KAREL SMITH, Cabin 83: Harry and I have been Aspenhof owners for almost 30 years. I am seeking re-election as one who feels that as we move forward we need to be respectful of Aspenhof’s 50-year heritage and build on it. I have served as Treasurer the past two years. During that time I have learned so much about the finances and history, and want to continue to build on the financial solidarity of previous boards. Aspenhof is a gift to us; we love the beautiful nature: the birds, wild flowers, animals (although sometimes irritating) and watching the change of seasons. Most of all we cherish the friendships we have made over the years. My background is in education, serving more than 45 years as librarian in the Hazelwood School District and The Priory School.
SUSAN SEYMOUR WESTCOTT, Cabin 44: Like many of you, I am a second-generation cabin owner here at Aspenhof. My parents were among the original owners when they purchased their cabin in 1964. There were five of us kids in that original space – no bump-outs back then. But I loved it because it was a lot better than camping out! I really enjoyed bringing my friends out when I was in high school and college. In THIS century, I finally convinced my husband that it was our turn to buy a place here in 2006. I recently retired after working as an advertising ad marketing communications manager for 14 years and then teaching those subjects for 25 years. In retirement I want to do more volunteer work. I still like the “naturalness” of Aspenhof, as well as the sense of politeness and genuine caring that almost everyone has. We have a great community and super-low association fees. If elected to the Board, I would like to work on improving our new entrance with signage and some natural landscaping. Thanks for your consideration.

***Aspenhof trees are saving on the ‘green’
Money doesn’t grow on trees, but trees cost money to plant…. unless you figure out a way to get a free tree. Aspenhof
Trustee Bob Eade has done just that. In the past three years, Eade has led a grant-writing effort that secured $2,000 from
a green tree program at Cuivre River Electric Cooperative. A second $1,000 grant was approved this summer, which will
allow Aspenhof to purchase trees for our landscaping effort at the new gate entrance. The first $1,000 grant, coupled with
donations from cabin owners, funded a row of 13 trees along the north edge of the big lake. Volunteers planted those
trees in 2012. Donations are welcome for the second round of plantings. Contact Eade at [email protected]
