Festival of the GeestWhere: Groningen, NLNumbers: app. 75 peopleAssignment: Please do something interactive with photography during our Festival of the Spirit in our church with 2 other photographers.

Result: We asked visitors of the festival 1 on 1 what Geest meant to them.

(Geest in Dutch has a mix of meanings; Ghost, Spirit, God..)

All participants opened up and shared their sometimes very intimate stories. On the spot I would take a photo that envisioned what they had just told me, making the visitor my art director.

We called this project :Focus on the Geest

It became such a great success that there was a exhibition in the church, but also in schools, galleries and libraries. Many pieces were sold.

A purple cloud

De Geest to me is a floating, somewhat transparant cloud that is both soft and strong at the same time.

One that connects and embraces.And that can chase away loneliness, provides rest and that will make you strong enough to radiate together or on your own.

Insight in silence

Every morning when I wake up at about 5am, I watch my garden sitting in my comfy chair.

In this silence promise of the new day a sense of meekness tells me that its alright to stop playing small.

STRP Festival

At the STRP festival in 2009, I found that some performances had quite an impact. One of them was made by Kurt Hentschlaeger and called ZEEIn ZEE people entered a space filled with smoke and coloured flickering light of a stroboscope light. Visitors were submerged in the smoke.

Before they were allowed to enter this space, people had to sign a health register stating they did not suffer from epilepsy. The artist meant this performance to be benign, whereas it struck me as hallucinogenic and heavy.

It also made me wonder how people responded and were effected by it.As eyes are the mirror of the soul they reflect the inside of a person to the outside world in all honesty.

So I decided to make a series of people eyes; the same pair of eyes right before and after the performance. The result is this collage : eyes @ ZEENiene.nu
