The Lottery travels around the state to sell tickets at festivals, fairs, and trade shows, including the Wichita Riverfest, pictured here. Every year a special ticket features the Riverfest theme. This year the theme was pirates, and the ticket was “Pirate’s Treasure.” I suggested staff members wear pirate accessories and place the second-chance drawing entries in a treasure chest. My coworkers agreed. I found pirate gear for everyone who worked in the sales trailer and also located the treasure chest.

Kansas Speedway event

Twice a year the Lottery hosted 80 people at Kansas Speedway for NASCAR race weekends. I served as hostess in a tent in the hospitality village and occasionally in a suite. I made certain beverages were always available, especially water in the warmer months, and I supervised the buffet line. I informed guests of special activities and made certain those that wanted to participate had the opportunity to do so. I located medical personnel when emergencies arose and assisted with special needs such as ADA transportation.

I took photos throughout the weekend and later mailed a photo CD to every guest. The CD included several photos of each guest as well as shots of the Speedway facility.

Kansas State Fair

Lottery personnel sell tickets every year at the Kansas State Fair. A large crowd gathers every day, especially on the last day when the second-chance drawing is held. I am behind the counter, in the red shirt to the left, waiting for the drawing and talking to the marketing director about how to deliver the grand prize to the winner.

For security purposes, all tickets entered in the second-chance drawing are bagged and sent to Lottery headquarters after the drawing. Someone has to crawl into the drum and shovel out the tickets. I often volunteered for the job.
