SCHEDULING & PRESENTER ABSTRACTS
0930-1000 Participant registration & coffee
1000-1045 Tamas Lorincz : Lead by example
Years of mollycoddling and top-down professional development initiatives have
made teachers dependent on external sources for their professional learning.
Someone somewhere decides what we need to develop; they invite a speaker,
set a time, prescribe requirements and offer incentives. All we have to do is
attend the session or the course and collect the certificate. In many cases, we
then go back to the classroom and do pretty much the same as we did before.
At the same time, we expect our students to be independent, motivated learners
who identify their passions, strengths and weaknesses and act on them in order
to become more successful. The contrast is disturbing. If we really want our
students to take charge of their own learning, we have to do the same. This is a
process which takes time. This short workshop might be your first step or a
renewed push to invest some of your time and energy to become a better
teacher who enjoys his/her profession much more.
In this session you will explore the reasons for and ways of taking charge of your
own learning, move beyond PD as you have learnt to expect it, and immerse
yourself in self-directed, personalised, life-long learning.
Presenter bio:Tamas Lorincz is an English Teacher and teacher trainer with over
20 years' experience of working with students and teachers in Europe and the
Middle East. He is passionate about using technology in the classroom, Personal
Learning Networks and Professional Development and life-long learning. He is an

1100-1145 Rehab Rajab: Online Presence in The Spotlight
Everyone is online! What does that mean for teachers? Is it enough to be an
active educator on campus? What about being a part of the greater education
community? Will it be enough to have a portfolio and an article stating yourteaching philosophy to get a good job in the next 10 years? Let's discuss ways to
build a strong online professional presence.
Presenter bio: Rehab Rajab has been involved in professional development
activities for teachers in the UAE through her work with TESOL
Arabia Organisation for the past seven years. Currently she is the Vice-
President/President-Elect of the Organization. She worked as an ESL teacher for
twelve years before becoming the Instructional Technology Senior Coordinator at
The Institute of Applied Technology. She is passionate about sharing innovative
teaching ideas and developing online learning communities. She is also an
advocate of technology in the classroom and considers herself a lifelong learner.
Rehab graduated with an MA in Educational Technology from Michigan State
University in 2010.
