This will be the McMaster Baja teams third consecutive year o competition.

Having used the rst two years to build up the experience needed to

successully compete in all aspects o the Baja SAE competition, this new

vehicle was about taking more risks with the design. The team created a

much more visually pleasing and lighter rame by increasing the number

o bends in the rame rom two to more than thirty. Experimenting with

a custom three link rear suspension in Montreal last year, the team has

gone to a two link suspension in both the ront and rear o the vehicle

that will provide ten inches o travel. This greatly simplied the design and

the number o components required but oered new challenges during

construction. This years vehicle will also be incorporating a gearbox with multiple orward gears as well as reverse, which had proven valuable during

the last two years o competition. The multiple orward gears will allow or the maximum torque o the vehicle to more than double as well as increase

its top speed. It is hoped that these risks will allow or the team to increase its perormance in all aspects.

Last year the Michigan State University Baja SAE team created their rst

4-wheel drive car, and was awarded the Navistar Standalone Creativity

& Innovation Award because o it. This year the team plans to re-run

the car with signicant improvements, both in an overall reduction in

weight coupled with a re-engineering o components rom the previous

year. With these changes and signicant testing, the team hopes toimprove the overall design while maintaining an image o creative

The Michigan State University Baja SAE team is coming o an innovative

year with the design o their rst 4-wheel drive system. Made up o

primarily rst and second year members, they are looking orward to

making an appearance at al l three races this season. This team has lots

o new and creative ideas that will hopeully bring a resh insight to the

design table and ultimately, the racetrack.

Each year, the team chooses a specic aspect to ocus their design

around. This year the team plans to design a car that ocuses on

simplicity and returns to its 2-wheel drive heritage. The primary design

challenge was balancing lightweight components with robustness

without sacricing perormance. This was achieved with a re-designed

rear end eaturing a swing-arm suspension and an optimized planetary

gearbox that will e liminate the need or a chain. With these designs, the

team hopes to make their mark on all three U.S. races.

Back to the basics was the name o the game or Blue Raider Baja (BRB)

or the 2009 season. Ater our consecutive races that resulted in

very poor perormances, all big plans, grand ideas, and innovations

have been postponed. The plan or 2009 was to build a Baja that

was simple, rugged, and gets the job done well with designs and

components that have proven themselves in years past. 2009 was very

much a resh start or BRB, in order to compete a new Baja must be

    built, rame and all.

The 2008-2009 MSOE Baja Design Team decided to take on the task

o creating a new solid rear axle or the Baja car as opposed to an

independent rear design. Although this task was a big undertaking, the

design team was up to the challenge. Since a solid rear axle was to be

designed, the rear suspension had to also be redesigned, as to al low

both trailing arms to move simultaneously. To optimize the saety and

comort o the driver, the chassis was also redesigned. Moreover, the

brakes were also redesigned to increase the cars stopping eciency,

as well as reduce the overall weight o the system. The last aspect o

the car to be redesigned was the power train. The new design, a custom gear box, allows or o the shel gears, with slight modications, to be

utilized. With all these new designs, the MSOE Baja Design Team is looking orward to seeing their car in action.

We are a rookie team consisting o eight seniors, the last time MSU,

Mankato participated in the Baja SAE competition was in 2003. Some

o our team attended the 2008 competition in Illinois to gain experience

and knowledge o the event. This helped us get a jump start or this

years competition and red us up or the school year. We have a great

support sta at school and acilities to help us abricate and test our

vehicle or the 2009 competition in Wisconsin. Our vehicle eatures

custom uprights to optimize suspension characteristics and ground

clearance. Also, we designed the vehicle to t in the back o any ull

The 2008-2009 Missouri S&T Baja season is the teams th since the

team started in 2004. Ater a large loss o senior members, the team

is currently 7 strong, with 4 juniors, 1 sophomore and 2 reshmen.

Only one member remains rom the 2007-2008 season. This has

caused some extra strain on the team, but the new season looks verypromising. Progress on the car has not been greatly aected by the

transition, and the team looks orward to completing the car ahead o

schedule. This is a vast improvement over the 07-08 project, where

the team was still nishing the car at competition. We owe our current

situation mostly to the lessons learned last year, but also to strong local

support. We are proud that local businesses are kind enough to support

Engineering Students at A&T have been competing in Baja SAE since

1992. In 2000 & 2001, we competed in all three Baja events nishing

rst overall in the country in 2000 and third overall in 2001. In 2008,

our best perormance was 18th at Tennessee, with a 16th place nishin endurance. The vehicle has been designed rom the ground up this

year only keeping the most successul eatures, ater heavy review. The

most signicant improvement is the implementation o a ully contained

chain reduction box which allows simple drive unit replacement, easy

maintenance as well as increased reliability. In addition, the suspension

perormance has been rened and weight removed. We are looking

changed. The SAE rules state that the people working on the Baja

project must be students. This year, the team consists primarily o

    underclassmen in the Engineering Department.

The SAE Baja Program consists o our main phases: design, testing,

manuacturing, static judging and dynamic perormance testing.

The design phase starts with sketches o the rame and drive train

components. The sketches are then input into Pro Engineer, a 3 dimensional modeling program. Using Pro Engineer, the design can be visualized in

3-D or layout clearance, easibility and workability. This will ensure that the design meets or exceeds all o the SAE BAJA specications.

The manuacturing phase is the most time consuming part o the project. The car is completely built rom the ground up! The building starts with

The 2009 Blazer Motorsports Baja has built on the knowledge gained over

the past 4 years. We have several returning members this year. This

allows us to really improve the design o the Baja. We have made majorchanges in our drivetrain and suspension or this year. Since we spent

last year learning to use the CNC machines and sotware, we could

incorporate more machined parts this year. This gave us a lot more

design reedom. In conclusion, we anticipate that the lessons learned

rom previous years will carry us ar in this competition.

Team Baja at the University o Houston is a senior design team who

has chosen to design, abricate, and build an SAE Baja vehicle. The

team is working together to complete the project beore graduation

will be the University o Houstons rst team to compete in the SAEBaja competition. The team consists o three seniors, all majoring in

    Mechanical Engineering Technology.

In designing the vehicle, the team reseached many possibilities that

would keep the vehicle within the SAE rules and regulations, but would

still allow them to compete or a top 10% placement. The rame was

designed using 4130 chromoly steel to handle the rough terrain as well

as complete the enduarnce race without rame ailure. Some o the

other design aspects considered while designing the rame were suspension components, steering system, engine mounting and drivers saety.
