Dennis Minor2010 DU International Artist of the Year

Dennis has been involved with Ducks Unlimited since 1980 when he first served as a volunteer for his local chapter in Alabama.

He later served as state art chairman for five years designing a competition for Alabama artists to produce the state’s sponsor prints. Alabama was first in the nation to initiate a state print.

Dennis’s only formal art training was high school art he received at Washington High School, Washington, Illinois.

After high school, Minor served in Vietnam with the 4th infantry division in 1967-1968. Prior to late January 1968, there were a few weeks of “down time” for his unit and Minor would sketch some of the Vietnamese people, oriental architecture and landscapes. Then the Tet Offensive opened up when Minor was just south of the Dak Bla River in Kontum Province and from then on there was very little time for art. As his unit went on the counteroffensive, Minor fought in nine major campaigns from February 1968 to November 1968. Minor’s only surviving sketch of combat was of two infantrymen aiding a wounded soldier. This piece of art was donated to the American Legion.

Dennis has always been a contributor to Ducks Unlimited. In his long association with DU, Dennis has donated over eighty limited edition prints and fourteen original works of art.

Dennis’s first appearance in the DU National Art Package was in 1997. Then another piece was selected in 1999, and in 2000 he was named DU International Artist of the Year. Ten years later he repeated as International Artist of the Year for 2010.

FREE CONSERVATION TOUR OFFERED TO CONVENTION ATTENDEESDU will host a “Conservation Tour” of the Upper Peoria Lakes Area including the Wightman Lake project for convention attendees. DU purchased 370 acres on the north end of Wightman Lake in 2005 and restored it as a showcase wetland project for the Illinois River. Located at the intersection of Highways 29 and 17 in Sparland, IL, the site is a designated waypoint on the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway. The property is now owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resource and is open to the public.

In addition to visiting Wightman Lake, the Conservation Tour will include stops Julie’s Corner Store (a local “Byway” business in Lacon) and at Mallard Farms (a highly successful local duck club owned by Randy Root). Along the route, DU Regional Biologist Eric Schenck will share some of the history of the Illinois River Valley and point out new DU projects planned for Upper Peoria Lake.

Please mark the Convention Registration form to indicate you will be joining us on the tour!
