Dear Festival-goer
International Festival and Summer School31 July – 14 August 2004
Welcome to LDSM Festival 2004.
This is a year of excitement and expansion. We go fromUlverston’s charming Coronation Hall in the south to theinspiring grandeur of Carlisle’s Cathedral in the north andtake in Cumbria’s time-weathered churches and otherfamiliar LDSM venues on our music-making highway.
Are you under the spell of Early Music? Don’t miss the twodifferent programmes given by Red Priest, who use Vivaldi’snickname as their own, as they take us into the 17th and 18thcenturies. In addition, Apollo & Pan bring us Renaissancemusic in Rydal Church.
Move swiftly to the wit and drama of Mozart’s Marriage ofFigaro given in Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre and the story ofDickens’s Miss Haversham brought to theatrical heights byMaxwell Davies and sung by the renowned Jane Manning.
Janác̆ek and Mozart are coupled in programmes given bythe Chilingirian and Szymanowski Quartets and pianist LeonMcCawley. The outstanding animated film of Janác̆ek’sopera The Cunning Little Vixen, a BBC collaboration withOpera Europe, Kent Nagano and the Berlin Radio SymphonyOrchestra with a lecture demonstration on the making of thefilm, is given in the Brewery’s cinema. Radio 3 will record theJanác̆ek concerts for future festival broadcasts.
Steven Osborne, now a leading young pianist on the worldcircuit, features Liszt in his first programme and jazz andimprovisation in a late night concert. The Galliard Ensembletake us into the soundscape of woodwind instruments andthe voices of Lancaster Singers join with Manchester’sCamerata Ensemble conducted by Denis McCaldin.
Rising Stars, young professionals and all prize-winners, featurein morning and afternoon recitals. The National YouthOrchestra’s Sinfonietta, conducted by Andrew Morley(another Rising Star), close the Festival programme with anafternoon workshop and evening concert, completing theFestival journey of a full circle and returning to our starting-point at Ulverston’s Coronation Hall.
Festival Deals have special offers … don’t miss them! Comeand enjoy the riches of music and the artistry of theperformers with us.
Happy Festival!
