Max and the Surf Max McGillivray is in Year 5 at our school. Max is a keen and skilled surfer
who participates in surfing competitions. It started with watching Dad enjoying
surfing and then seeing some of his friends take it up. Max also said “I like
being at the beach”. Last weekend Max participated at the NSW State
Shortboard titles at Maroubra. Shortly prior to the tournament Max was
advised he could only compete in one age division at the titles. Max is
currently 10 years old. His correct age division for this tournament would have
been the under 12s. However, if successful the under 12 division is not able
to access the Australian titles so in discussion with his parents Max decided
to compete in the under 14 division and if successful he would be able to
progress to the Australian titles.
Max competed on both Saturday and Sunday. He competed in two heats on
Saturday and was placed first in both. In each heat Max was up against three
to four other competitors. In the whole of the 14s division there were about 50
competitors. On Sunday Max participated in three rounds before he made the
final. He progressed through all three finals and having made it as a semi-final
competitor he had qualified to compete at the Australian titles. “In the final I
was winning for about 8 minutes then another competitor achieved a good
score and he took first place. I finished in second place. Max will next
compete at the Australian titles off Stradbroke Island later this year.
Max said “I enjoy surfing. It is really fun. Each time you get a really good wave
you just want to get out there. I am sponsored by Billabong and that has given
me a big confidence boost.” In training and competing Max has also surfed in
Western Australia, South Australia and Indonesia. Max trains every day in the
water. Dad trains me and Mum is the support crew. “I also have a surf coach:
Peter Duncan who is Evans based.”
Congratulations on your achievements to date Max. Watch this space!

2/3O Dash Robots Ms O’Connor’s class had fun exploring with our new Dash robot friends this
week.
Waratah Award On Tuesday, Year 7 students completing the Waratah Award went on a canoe
paddle up the Evans River. It was a beautiful sunny day, however the wind
was against us in both directions. This really tested the students ’
perseverance and resilience, but they were outstanding. They demonstrated
great skill, communication and teamwork. Big thanks to Mr O’Reilly for
organising the day. Michelle Gray, Technologies Teacher
Debating On Thursday afternoon, the Evans River 7/8 debate team competed in the
first round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. We competed against
Alstonville High School. We were very nervous as we hadn’t competed before.
The topic of the debate was ‘That students in Year 8 and below should only
ever receive feedback instead of grades or marks’.
We were lucky enough to get the topic we wanted and even got our preferred
side of the debate, the affirmative side. By the end of the debate we believed
that Alstonville High had the upper hand, but to
our surprise, we ended up winning. The
adjudicator had plenty of feedback for all of us,
and we were grateful to receive her advice. We
look forward to our next debate against South
Grafton High School at the end of the term.
Halle Fardy, Year 8
P&C Raffle Winner Congratulations to Raphaell Leroy, the winner of
the P&C Fire Pit Raffle.
Eco Warriors This year our school was a successful Sustainable
Schools Grant recipient. Some students from 4/5F
who are passionate about increasing our school’s
sustainable practices have been helping with the
initial phase - Green Waste. These students have
written persuasive texts to encourage students to
put their green waste in the correct bin.
“We would like it if you could recycle your food
scraps!”
“I would love you to know that we are trying really
hard to keep the environment safe. We don’t want
to see rubbish making it to the ocean where there
are sea animals that can choke on different types
of rubbish. Please don’t litter, don’t be lazy and
put your waste in the correct bin.”
“At our school, we are sorting out our rubbish. We
have a squad that is helping people learn about
putting food scraps in the bins with the green lids
that we have set up in front of the sandpit. There
are two bins for food scraps. Please make sure to
check the sign, as meat and fish only go in one of
the bins and remember to put plastic wrappers in
the blue bins.”
“At the end of each day all the food scraps are

Peer Support This week in Peer Support the children will identify their strengths. Children
will explore the following important strengths - curiosity, kindness and
teamwork. Through the activities, children will be able to recognise which
strengths they possess. They will realise how important it is to use their
strengths in different situations. During the week, encourage your child to
share their strengths with you.

SAS Staff Recognition Week Next week is SAS recognition week where we recognise and appreciate the
work of all our non-teaching staff.
taken to the agriculture farm to feed the pigs and
goats and chickens. Feeding the animals saves us
money, and we are recycling all our food to the
animals that they will enjoy.”
“We are trying to stop pollution and landfill from
being a problem. If you put a little effort into using
the correct bin, maybe the world will follow in your
footsteps. We don’t want to see animals dying
because of the rubbish. We want to see animals
live. We would like YOU to work HARD for us to
save the sea and land animals. Putting your food
waste in the correct bin is very important to us,
and it is also very important for the environment.
WE are counting on YOU!”

Evans River Challenge On Friday 14th August, Year 6 students from
Coraki, Casino, Woodburn and Broadwater came
together with the Year 6 students at Evans River
for the annual Evans River Challenge. The school
gymnasium was converted to a ‘county fair’ of
market stalls and activities. Students were
challenged with setting up a stall, promoting their
activity and having a turn at all of the other stalls
in the market place. The gym was a flurry of
activity as they all attempted to use their sporting,
thinking and persuasion skills and at times had to
rely on old-fashioned luck. The students also took
part in science experiments with Mr Cleaver and
made Artistic creations in the Art Room with Miss
Simpson. All enjoyed the day. Future transition
details will be provided in upcoming newsletters
and the school Facebook page.

K-6 Athletics Carnival With the possibility of further restrictions coming into schools, K-6 moved their
annual K-6 Athletics Carnival forward to Tuesday this week to ensure our
students did not miss out, and what a glorious and sunny day it was!
Without our usual crowd of parents and helpers, we relied on the wonderful
support of our Yr9 students and the loud cheers from the students
themselves. Congratulations to all who helped and the students who
participated on the day.
Two records were broken on the day:
Kai Cooper broke his Yr6 buddy’s old 70m record for the 6-year-old boys
with a time of 14.34 seconds (Old record: Jarvis Semple 14.56s – 2014).
Jamal Cowan set a new record in the 11-year-old boys’ discus event with a
throw of 17.84m (Old record: Callum O’Grady 17.20m – 2005).
Congratulations to these students! Your name has been added into the record
book!
We still have 2 events to complete for students turning 8 or older in 2020,
before the announcement of age champions, the winning house and the
presentation of ribbons – the 800m and high jump events will be conducted
over the next few weeks during sport time. Fiona Fields - K-6 Teacher

University – Early Entry Many universities use
schemes other than
the ATAR to gain
entry into their
courses. The criteria
for these vary from institution to
institution. Some are based on school
recommendations while others look at a student’s
community involvement. Often offers are made
prior to the release of the ATAR’s, hence the
name “early entry”.
A comprehensive list of all the schemes can be
found by clicking here or by going to the school
website and selecting Post School
Options>University>Early Entry Schemes.
