Production practise and managment skills

(most successful aspect/ skill)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-ProductionWhen evaluating the most successful aspect of my pre production stage, I had many successful aspects and skill that came up

during the pre production were we more or less organised the filming stages. The first most successful aspect of my pre

production would have to be developing the concept, the concept I developed was around the issue of energy efficient vehicles,

which I believe was a very a aspect as this issue is very different and the issue is unique in terms that not a lot of people actually

look in to the issue because it is seen as very complicated, which in hindsight I did realise however due to my optimism it did

take time to realise. If I got the chance I believe I would maybe have chosen to look at a different concept as vehicles don’t

always appeal to every person or gender. Another successful skill that I would like to reflect on is the pitching of the concept as Ifeel that I my personal pitch helped to make my production desirable and also helped me pick up the initial reaction of audience

towards my product. Also another majorly successful aspect was the scripting, that allowed me to order the every shot and

character of the production which lead me to organizing my final interviews, which I feel was also a very big achievement for me

as I organized some very high profile interviews with the likes of Boris Johnson, Dr Ralph Clague and also the sourcing and

organising of an interview with a specialist energy efficient driving instructor.

When evaluating the most successful aspects of my production, I had many successful aspects and skill that came up during

the production were we actually practically bought the production to life, as this section was very demanding of my personal

skills as it fell in my responsibility to organise all aspects. I feel that a great achievement of this production was actually getting

the interviews filmed, as I initially managed to organise all the interviews, however when I called all 3 of my interviewees theywere unable to do the interviews that they agreed to prior, which then meant I had to re think my interviews and chase people

for slots, in one instance it meant travelling all the way over to Woking in Surrey to interview an energy efficiencies expert

however finally allowing me to achieve the mixed fun fact file type of finished product that I initially set out to produce. Another

successful aspect of the production stage would also be the framing of every shoot as they are all very thoughtfully framed to

maximise the view of both the interviewee and the surroundings.

When evaluating the most successful aspect of my post-production stages, I would say are the editing stages as the edit of my

production was very tedious as managed to get thirty four minutes of footage which I managed to take down to 19 minutes for

the rough edit, however I was still very far from the five minute guide line that my client had asked for, in the last 4 days I took

my production from 19 minutes and managed to bring it just under 6minutes. I believe this is a successful aspect as I was ableto cut the production drastically and still manage to not ruin the mode of address that the production was hoped to address.

(Time-management)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-ProductionWhen evaluating the time management of the pre-production stages of my production, I would have to reflect on my remarkable

ability to stick to all the deadlines set for all coursework's needing to be submitted, as at the pre-production there was various

research pieces that were due in, however there was one exception to this and that was the shooting script this went 2 weeks

over the deadline as every time I finished the shooting script I would show it to my tutor who would highlight various

improvements which meant that I fell behind on my schedule, if I got a chance to do the shooting script again I believe I would

make changes to this process as I believe I will set out by speaking to my tutor and compiling a detailed brief then go about

constructing the shooting script, and hopefully eliminate the mistakes that I made originally. Another key section of timemanagement that came together in the pre-production stages was the shooting script, production schedules and production

diaries, as these were all key in helping me to schedule the next step and then assessing how far I got with projection diaries

were I detailed the amount of work completed in the week.

When evaluating the time management of the actual production stage I would say that it went totally out of the window as this

stage of the production was not the slightest bit organised, as all the interviews that I had previously organised and had

confirmed all had to cancel at the last minute, for one reason or another. My interview with Toyota was more or less declined as

they fell under a lot of stress as the company were re calling 1 million vehicles, and meant that the dealers couldn’t give me an

interview however they did say that I could call them back the following month and they will asses there situation and possibly fit

me in if they have time, which left me in trouble as I had a deadline for the footage the following week, my interview with Dr Clague the energies expert was also called of till the following week Friday as he had booked a trip to America, however my

final interview with the Driving instructor was the only one that went to plan. I then went about sourcing another manufacturer

that created energy efficient vehicles and found Volkswagen who helpfully were able to organise the interview which was

brilliant.

When reflecting on the post-production section of my production I would that the time management was very well controlled, as

the editing was continuously controlled by my tutors and myself as I had also compiled a production schedule, there were two

main deadlines during this stage the first deadline being for the rough edit and the second was for the final edit. I was pleased of

my time management as I managed to meet both of them however for the final edit I had to stay back one night after school till

half eight PM in order to ensure the final edit be ready for the deadline, so overall I was happy as all deadlines were metespecially as the work that needed to be finished was all complete considering the amount of editing that was required.

(Actors and Crew)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-Production

When reflecting on the actors and crew that I organised in the pre production stages, I would say that I just choose some friends

that I usually talk to in lesson as I felt that they would best be able to assist me in my production as they sort of understand what

it is that I want in my production. I also decided that I would use myself and another female actor (Harpreet) as I felt this would

help keep a balanced gender appeal as both genders would be able to relate to the presenters, I also added all this in to theshooting script ready for the creation of my production.

When reflecting on the actors and crew, I would have to say that all the planning totally went out of the window again as in my

first interview probably the most high profile interview that I will ever take with the Mayor Boris Johnson, one of my crew member

forgot to engage the sound control which meant the footage was recorded but without the sound and meant that I was unable to

use the footage. This incident made me reconsider my entire crew, as after assessing the technical skills of them I decided not

involve them in my production and went about filming a lot of the footage by myself or with the assistance of my friend who has

more media technical ability along with experience. In hindsight I am very proud of this decision as it would have been the easy

option to continue using the original crew however I stepped away from this idea and made other arrangements that allowed me

to achieve much higher quality of finish. Another change to the actors was the change of the presenters as I sat down with thefemale presenter and tried to work out dates that we go out and carry out the filming, however the dates didn’t work out and

opted out of including her at the cost of losing out on appealing for the female target audience. When looking at the production I

don’t feel that we have completely lost appeal towards the female audience, though if I had the chance to re film I would like to

include a female presenter.

When reflecting on post production use of actors or crew, I would have to detail that there was no use of any one else apart

from my own editing skills, as I have been fortunate enough to compile a wealth of experience from editing various projects from

the past, as I completed many editing tasks at various levels of my media qualifications at both G.C.S.E and also A.S level, I

also completed an editing course were my skills were polished.

(Equipment and Booking)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-Production

When reflecting on the equipment and booking in the pre production stages of my production I would have to say that there

wasn’t much utilisation of any specialist equipment, though at this stage I did begin to plan what equipment I would require and

use for my production, as I was planning to achieve a high quality finish so referenced to a lesson that I had last year during my

AS level year were we research the specifications of the equipment, after re reading that I decided that I was going to use the

Panasonic cameras as I felt that there specification was slightly better then the cannon ones, however both cameras were

extremely similar, this judgment also came down to personal preference. I also received a quick lesson on how to use the Rode

boom mic, as this was a new piece of equipment to me and it was the first time I used it.

In terms of the equipment and booking during the production I would have to say that I managed it all quite well as I always pre-

booked all my equipment, I also booked my equipment over the half term holidays, this was probably when I got the most

footage. However I didn’t take the rode boom mic out as on the first interview I mad a fatal error of not engaging the controls

and so I opted to not use the mic.

At this stage I didn’t really book any equipment as I was assigned a laptop were I compiled all my work however I did at times

have to book out a camera in order transfer footage from the camera to the laptop. However I did use some very technicalsoftware in order to edit my production such as I movie HD and also garage band in order to sort the sound.

(Budget)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-Production

When reflecting on the budget that I initially fabricated, I mainly outlined the basic and the obvious as

in my experience I have never actually dealt with budgets first hand, and due to this I feel I was naive

in a sense that I slightly miss estimated certain aspects of my budget.

Originally I had anticipating more then £4984, however during the production I ended up spending a lot

more on wining and dining my crew this went up nearly £100 and also the travelling expense which I

had originally discarded as I said that it wouldn’t apply worked out to £180 after addressing the

breaking rail way boundary fines. If I could re film my production I would try to arrange alternative

measure of transport and will also maybe not take the crew to the pub for lunch as it ended up costing

a lot more then what I originally budgeted for.

Pre production, there wasn’t actually any expenditure however I believe I will re draft the original budget as I feel that the

original budget set was slightly under predicted, and I feel it wasn’t very well managed and I also stepped way over the original

£5000 budget, and I feel re drafting the budget will allow me to highlight were exactly it slipped. .

(less successful aspects/skills)Pre-Production

ProductionPost-Production

In terms of the less successful aspects of the pre production process I would have to highlight to personal parts that I felt let medown, the first being the shooting script as I felt it was perfect once finished however it took forever to complete and I could have

minimised the time that I wasted completing simply by organising the order before hand. Another less successful aspect/skill

would have to my initial crew that I organised as they caused me a very big interview, and also wasted a lot of time.

When assessing less successful aspects of my production I would have to highlight only one aspect which is the error made on

the Boris Johnson interview, were the sound controls were not engaged and meant that the interview was recorded without

sound. Also I found that my interview at the Volkswagen garage was successful in terms of perceiving the information that I

needed, but I felt that the sound recording was very unclear due to the background music playing in the garage plus other

customers in the garage at the time.

A less successful aspect of the post production was the editing of the Volkswagen interview as I felt that I tried to hard to editthe sound of the interview and my attempted to save the sound left the sound very bodged and sounding un professional.

Another mistake made on my behalf was the adding of name graphics, as I ended up messing the final graphic as I entered the

wrong name caption that appeared and I felt that this could have been avoided but due to me not proof watching the all of the

production before making the final copy.
