FILM DISTRIBUTION
WHAT IS FILM DISTRIBUTION?
A film distributor is an individual or organisation who will
represent your film at festivals and markets around the world. The
distribution of a film is the process through which a film is made
available to watch for an audience by a film distributor. Distributors
will source new films to represent in their distribution catalogues.
Examples of major film distributors:

FoxThe Works
20th Century Fox uses more well known
famous actors and actresses compared to
The Works as they have more money to do
this as they are a major distribution
company. Their films would be of better
quality. Also they have a wider target
audience in comparison to The Works.
MY FILM
Our film’s storyline is based on bullying and seeing as bullying is quite a huge thing all over the
world many people would be interested in watching it. Also, because our film has a cartoon/comic book
theme, that makes it a bit more quirky and the types of effects used makes it look more modern, so
younger people may find it more appealing compared to the more older people. I think 20th Century Fox
would be interested in my film because it is sort of similar to film which they have released before such
as ‘Diary of a wimpy kid’ which is also about bullying, and the main character is young similarly to our
main characters as there is there is not much difference in age between these. Diary of a wimpy kid is
quite a popular film, so if 20th Century Fox were to release our film ‘The Wimp’ I think it could also be
just as popular.
The Wimp
MY FILM
I think our film ‘The Wimp’ would have a wide target audience because of
our storyline and theme. As our film is mainly based on bullying, and bullying
doesn’t happen only in the UK, so it would have a range of target audiences as
bullying is a big thing all over the world.

STRATEGIES
Some possible marketing
strategies and release
strategies would be to
advertise our film through
social media such as Twitter
and Facebook because a
large amount of people use
these sites and are likely to
see the advertisement.
SELF -DISTRIBUTION
Advantages to self-distribution
- You can retain full control and rights over your film, giving you the choice over where
your film is shown.
-You don't have to give a cut of the money made from any sales of your film to a
distributor.
Disadvantages to self-distribution
-It can be a full-time job in itself as it can be very time consuming because of having
to chase buyers and sales and filling in paperwork.
-It may limit your options for sales as distributors have established relationships with
buyers and many buyers may only be interested in packages of films.
-You need to be very legally aware that you're not signing away rights to your film
that'll prevent you from showing it elsewhere.
