Evaluation of Music Magazine
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
My music magazine doesn’t challenge convention and instead conforms to the conventions of music magazines so that it appeals to the target audience of the magazine.
I have used fonts and colours that conform towards
the rock/pop genre.
The image used on the front cover shows the
attitude of rock/pop and shows clearly that it is a music magazine as the
model is holding a guitar.
Like in the cover of Adele the model on my magazine cover
has a serious face which reflects their music and portrays them in
a serious light to shows that they take their music seriously.
I have used a plain background in my magazine, which
shows doesn't distract from the main image.
Like with Rolling Stone I have placed my coverlines
down one side of the magazine, so that the
cover isn't appear crowded and disorganised.
I have also enlarged the name of the music artist and made the name stand out on
the page so that the readership audience are
drawn in to read about the artist featured on the front
cover.
Unlike with he Rolling Stone cover I have added a stroke to the coverlines, masthead, the
artists name and the selling line to make it stand out form the
page, where as with the Rolling Stone cover they have only done
it with the masthead.
2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My music magazine is targeted towards young
adults as they are the generation that are more likely to read and be in to
the pop/rock genre.
The cover from rolling stone magazine, clearly
sells their article to young adults and even
possibly towards teenagers.
I have taken inspiration from his and tries to make the
article like this and tried to make my cover like this so
that it is appropriate for the intended target audience.
I have aimed this magazine at young adults as thy are the generation that would prefer pop/rock compared to other age groups as it is
more suited to them.
For this I have made the article look interesting, without
looking cluttered and busy, like an article from ‘Kerrang!’. I have based my article on
something that is more like, Rolling Stone Magazine or Q
magazine.
The main image of the article is aimed more towards young adults The model in the main image looks empowered
holding the guitar. This breaks conventions compared to how women
are normally portrayed in music magazines. Women are objectified in music magazines, in order to sell the
magazines to a male audience.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The kinds of institutions that distribute magazines are
publishers. IPC Media are one of the leading institutions in the
UK.
They are used as publishers by NME and Guitar & Bass, which are partially the genre of people who
read my type of magazine.IPC Media are a well-known
publisher; 26 million adults in the UK read a magazine that is
published by IPC media.
The kinds of distribution methods that publish
companies use would be putting new magazines in
various popular retailers like WHSmiths and newsagents, so that all of the target audiences
will be reached.
As well as these various retail places, big supermarkets such as Tesco, Morrisons, Saisburys
and Asda.
Visual versions of the magazine, and having an online magazine are also other ways of selling
the magazine.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
When I was creating my magazine I was aware of who my target audience was and
took all of my decisions for my magazine into consideration
when I was designing the layout and designing for my contents,
article and front page.
In order to make magazine suitable to the audience I also
had to consider age, gender and culture. After I had designed my front cover I decided that I was
going to keep the rest of the magazine in the same style with
similar colours and fonts.
I took their lifestyle into consideration as well, basing the
cost of my magazine on their lifestyle so that it would fit into their monthly costs. I did this
because I didn’t want the reader to e deterred by the price in order to read something that they would
enjoy.
I made sure that my model wasn’t showing too much skin on the cover so that it would widen the target audience in
different cultures. However my music magazine would appeal
more to Americans and the British.
My music magazine would appeal more to
Americans and the British.
Adam listens to Pop/Rock music so would be into my genre of magazine, and would read my magazine. The genre of band
that are involved in the magazine are pop/rock bands so there would be bands like Avicci, Paramore and Linkin’ Park.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
To attract the audience for my magazine, I tried to attract the
audience through the fonts, colours and images of my
magazine, in order to make it look interesting and make you look back and take an interest I
the magazine.
My target audience would be interested by blacks,
whites and greys and with a bold colours standing out of the page. They would also be interested by bold fonts
a well.
Also to interest the audience so they would
buy the magazine again, I made the article
within the magazine interesting as well.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
