LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE

LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

EVALUATION QUESTION 7

What Brief Were You Working To?

The brief for our preliminary exercise was: “Continuity task involving filming and editing a

character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. The task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.”

The brief for our main task was: “To make the opening sequence/first two minutes of a

film, including the opening titles.”

Preliminary Exercise To Final Product

Many things we learnt in the preliminary exercise we incorporated into the final product, as from it we learnt many things about creating the film.

For example, we used the methods we learnt in the preliminary exercise to create a match-on-action again in our final film. By retaking the same shot over and over from different

angles, it makes it easier to create a match on action that we had to include. Having never used Final Cut Express before, the practice on the preliminary exercise greatly helped when making the final product as it gave the opportunity to experiment and learn how to effectively use the program.

Preliminary Exercise To Final Product

The match-on-action technique replicated in our final product.

What Have I Got Better At?

During the time from preliminary exercise to the final product, I improved my skills on both filming and editing. Previously, the only program I had experience on for

editing was Sony Movie Studio, and although it also professional it was quite different from Final Cut Express, meaning I had to take the time to learn how to operate the new program.

I had only ever used basic cameras and iphone cameras before, so I got the opportunity to learn from scratch how to operate a professional recording camera.

Different Methods

We used some new and different methods in our final product compared to the preliminary exercise. We included some more complicated match on

actions, where our previous one included 3 different angles, ones in our final product included up to 6 angles.

We experimented more with sound and rhythmic editing.

We used more advanced and unique shots, such as the worm’s eye view shot and point of view shots to add more interest to the movie.

We were able to do this by taking the basic foundations from the preliminary exercise and expanding them to try and create something more advanced.
